To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

You're right - whipped up by the media. But then the pandemic showed us that some people love drama and will make a fuss about absolutely anything, no matter how trivial. You do wonder what the wartime generation would think about some people's complete lack of perspective and common sense.

Exactly. It's quite unbelievable isn't it? I can't believe some of the stuff I am reading on here. Scaremongering at its finest.

@bellac11

Right, so you a few times saw kids outside playing at maybe 1pm on some random day and that gives you the confidence to speak for the entire Spanish education system.

Whereas I lived in Spain for two years, taught both in school and business, dated a Spaniard and lived with Spaniards. Yet somehow your random recollections are more likely to be true.

And I didn’t say shops and restaurants (which do also tend to have very random opening hours). I said schools and businesses, which is true. I tutor for business English for a year and we started at 7.30am during the Summer because the business day started at 8. People often went home in the afternoon and came back in the evening. Which is fine because most people in Spain wouldn’t dream of having dinner until 9 or 10.

But absolutely you are right. You’ve been to Madrid a few times and know everything.

Er no. We have some family members who are teachers, just recently retired but we also saw kids in PE lessons outdoors and happened to get talking about it because we were surprised.

Despite the warnings all over the shop, there wasnt much slowing down either within our family or their neighbours.

What exactly is scaremongering on this thread?

warning that the NHS is overloaded and it's very likely that hundreds if not thousands of people will die

I am surprised by the fear of this. I lived in the tropics and these temperatures are just normal peak summer. Hot weather warnings would also get issued but really just apply common sense. Stay out of the midday heat. Take it easy. Stay in the shade. Hydrate.

It won't be pleasant, as most of us have no air con but it is not dire straits either.

In the tropics!!!!! Not the UK!!!!!!

That’s not scaremongering, it’s just factual reporting of what the NHS, UKHSA, Met Office etc have said…

WhenIsEnough · 15/07/2022 23:26

I love it. Brits are only happy when they’re complaining.

stratforduponavon · 15/07/2022 22:42

The hospital trust spokesman earlier on the news said they are expecting people with burns and people who are dehydrated. All fixable. Who on earth is stupid enough to sit in the sun when it is so hot. Stupid idiots!!

Sadly, a lot of people are that stupid. See all the people on this thread saying it's fine, it's only a couple of days, you like hot weather when you're on holiday. These are the people who will be needing an ambulance when they collapse from heatstroke. God help the NHS.

MissTrip82 · 15/07/2022 23:37

The panic is a bit much.

It will be uncomfortable, and lots of people will need to adjust their behaviour and expectations for a few days. There will be some things that don’t work well, as is always the case when weather is unusual. It’s surprising me after the last couple of years how much this seems to be stressing some people.

I feel for the people working in PPE. It’s been very unpleasant here (normal to be 35-42 over summer) for the last couple of years. As have been the 12 hr shifts without a drink break etc.

Well it only been 18 up North for the last few days, anyway I will believe it when I feel it.

You must be my ex gf. . .

Jibbajabba1 · 15/07/2022 23:38

Why would anyone start a thread broadcasting their lack of empathy, and poor grasp of the current situation, as well as the broader context and potential implications? Oh wait, just a garden variety troll attention seeking through baiting. Quite sad really.

Norwegiancopice · 15/07/2022 23:43

I have a number of health conditions. Hot weather is awful for me and I just have to endure it whilst counting down the minutes until it's over.

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/07/2022 23:54

I'm in Derbyshire and the weather has been pants today. About 19 degrees at its peak and cloudy. It was hottest on Tuesday when it was very humid, then it rained. If it's really hot here I'll eat my words.

PickAChew · 15/07/2022 23:56

People aren't panicking at all in those Mediterranean areas which currently have wildfires. They're so used to the heat that having their houses burned to the ground in a matter of minutes is no big deal. Last I read, only 281 people in Spain and/or Portugal had died as a result of the heat in the past few weeks. Hardly anyone at all. Why are we such snowflakes, eh?

Saracenia · 16/07/2022 00:02

Marmite27 · 15/07/2022 18:32

several weeks in Turkey with +40 temps with no air conditioning in a boiling hot apartment with no outdoor space or swimming pool as it was a building site.

There wasn’t people dying all over the place. Hmm

People do die in heatwaves though. Heart attacks are much more prevalent and anyone with health conditions (and that’s a lot of people), elderly or very young are at risk too. The reason you didn’t “notice” people dying is because the statistics come out much later on. It isn’t so obviously measurable as someone getting hit by a tree in a storm.

Skydaze · 16/07/2022 00:02

You don't sound like you want to understand though, really, or help in any way. It reads an awful lot like you either are panicking about people panicking (not irrational in my view) or are fed up with the constant barrage of bad news / crises (also not irrational), in which case a few weeks off all social media and news sites will work wonders for you. The off button is a wonderful invention we should probably all avail ourselves of far more than we do.

katesbushh · 16/07/2022 00:14

While my house is going to be baking, we will manage.
Those who don't have gardens, fans etc it is going to be horrible.

I'm more concerned about work.
I work in a&e.
So I'll have a face mask on in what's am already stuffy place.
I'll have patients who have copd, heart conditions etc have not coped with the heat.
Burns.
People who have spent the day on the piss etc
And covid.

If I could stay at home I'm front of the fan I would be less concerned!

katesbushh · 16/07/2022 00:15

All those typos. Apologies.

malificent7 · 16/07/2022 00:17

Yanbu...it's stupid. I love the heat, understand it's hard for many but it's summer. I like my summers hot and winters cold. The grey meh weather of earlyJuly can do one!

marvellousmaple · 16/07/2022 00:33

Are the hospitals not air conditioned in the UK?

ZombieMumEB · 16/07/2022 00:40

I live in Australia, so I am finding a lot of the posts in regards to the heat rather amusing.

Also amusing is the assumption that all Australian houses and workplaces have air conditioning.

EmmaH2022 · 16/07/2022 00:42

marvellousmaple · 16/07/2022 00:33

Are the hospitals not air conditioned in the UK?

nope. They needed this since....before I was born. I don't know if the newest ones might have it in some areas?

my poor father was in a boiling hospital in the 2018 heatwave.

RubyJam · 16/07/2022 00:46

i think it’s ridiculous
Im in Scotland where it’s NOT hot and I’m sick of the DM headlines of “ UK heatwave”
No - it’s not a UK heatwave - it’s a southern English heatwave.
Britain is not England
Up here it’s grey , drizzly and to be honest a crap summer

RubyJam · 16/07/2022 00:48

Also just to add , I have lived and worked abroad in the Med in 42c heat , in a uniform and managed ( just about ) with my hair pinned up and lots of water and desk fans…

The drama around this is astounding
