Boden. Ironed or not

'tattoos - I have to look at them not you;

Eh? Unless the tattoos are on peoples backs, Tattoos are not invisible to people who have them.

DPotter · 15/07/2022 11:43

Umbrellas - ideally all umbrellas, in all situations.

They are dangerous to others and rarely keep the user dry anyway. Raincoats with hoods are much more effective way of keeping dry. I might be persuaded to allow them in situations where population density was one person per square kilometre. And I like the pretty Japanese decorated paper ones for show. But that's it.

Flat head screws. There is just no excuse for why they still exist.

GCHeretic
“Athleisure” wear on anyone who’s not going to a gym, coming back from a gym, or in a gym, and who has clearly never been to a gym.

How would you know if they've "clearly never been to a gym"? 🙄Just say "fat" when you mean "fat" - and plenty of fat people go to the gym."

I agree with @GCHeretic

They're never 'fat'/overweight, just clearly never stepped foot inside a gym or on their way to class or a sport. Why wear the full kit of what you imagine people wear to do sports/class/gym. It looks ridiculous.

(Hannah who I know through her mum Julie)
Hannah Julie'sdaughter

(Hannah who's a brunette)
Hannah Brown

Even easier if everyone else uses the same shorthand to distinguish one Hannah from another too. Then I guess if she has kids they could use the same distinguisher, just for the sake of simplicity and so people know they're related.

I'd ban sneezing. There's just no good reason for it.

You do realise that that is how most surnames actually started, don't you? So you'd just be creating new ones

Love this @firef1y

Very true.

Audible noise from phones, iPads, games consoles etc in public. I’d have the sound only available through headphones & cutting out if the volume went above a certain level.

Adult cyclists on pavements.

People walking slowly down the left side of tube escalators. If you’re not in a hurry, stand on the right.

My ex, if Sheffield would kindly take him back I’d be very grateful :p

Tbf flat head screws do look nicer on certain things if they are in the same direction (but agree they're a bugger to use).

And was in fact the entire point of my post. That if you "banned" surnames, people would still need to distinguish between people with the same first name, and would most likely end up reinventing surnames.

I even made it specially obvious by deliberately choosing four of the same type of distinguishers as most British people's surnames come from (occupation, geographical origin, parent's given name, distinguishing feature), and by pointing out that people would start using the same distinguishers for people to facilitate shared understanding (like surnames), and that the distinguishers could then be inherited to show family connection (like surnames).

But yes, everyone pointing out the similarities between my scenario and our current reality is very, very clever for noticing, and I'm very silly for thinking I'm inventing something new 🙄

Hmm. 🤔

Not necessarily. I think you've over thought it and tied yourself in knots. I doubt people would be identified by physical characteristics in any case nowadays, more likely numbers.

It was a joke. I thought it was funny Bamboo but you probably didn't hear my giggle above the roar of the whooshing noises.

How is that "tied in knots"? 😕 It's a very basic explanation of how surnames came about in this part of the world, showing one of the ways people deal with the problem of shared names. Other parts of the world have done it differently.

It's a light-hearted ironic post about why simply banning surnames is impractical — people need, and will find, a way round the problem of Too Many Hannahs (for me it would be Rebeccas). Maybe numbers, sure. Why not?

I wasn't referring to the origin of surnames, which we all will know, as 'tied in knots' obviously.

Exactly. We all know this stuff, which is why I used it as part of the (crappy, regretted) joke. The scenario wouldn't work as an obvious and blatant recapitulation of history if surname origin was obscure knowledge.

If the rest of what I said (if you ban surnames, people will still need to find a way to specify Hannahs when speaking, which may very well just result in the reinvention of something very like surnames) seems particularly complex to you, then I guess I can't help any further with that.

It's really not that deep 🙄

I would ban them being allowed to have an uncapped amount of children whilst intending for them to be paid for by tax payers ..

This is already the case. You can only get tax credits for two children.
