Next Monday/Tuesday 36 degrees!

LittleBitFunny32 · 14/07/2022 23:42

So the weather is now showing 36 degrees for next Monday and Tuesday for where I live in the south east. Our country is obviously not geared up for these temperatures. I work in education and am seriously considering not going in next Mon/Tues as I know it will be torture in the classroom. I won't be sending my children to school either.
Is anyone going to change what they do next week? Not go to work? Stay inside? Not send children to school? Change mode of transport? Spend all day in an air conditioned supermarket? 😁

I appreciate that the country and workforce can't just stop for a heatwave but at the same time, how can we carry on as normal when we're not equipped for these conditions.

Totally agree, I work in a school and it's awful. My children will be staying off.

I've literally never been in weather so hot in my life. Even on holiday, have never, ever experienced 36c!

Badgirlriri · 14/07/2022 23:48

🙄

Temese · 14/07/2022 23:52

My dd has sports day on Monday. I can't believe they haven't cancelled it yet; if the forecast is still saying this on Sunday, I won't send her in either.

Unfortunately I have no choice but to go to work, even though my office is an absolute furnace.

You're a teacher and you're really going to bunk off just because it's hot for 2 days?

They said they work in education, not that they are a teacher

hurtyb · 14/07/2022 23:55

I'm in London & no air con at work. Will just see what happens, this week hasn't been as bad as predicted.

It's going to be really hot.

One of my children has been extremely ill with sun stroke when the temperature was 10 degrees cooler.

Don't see any point in risking their health.

Lots of the children will still be sent in to school. They need a teacher.

And yes, maybe op isn't a teacher. She did say she works in a classroom though suggesting teacher or teaching assistant.

LittleBitFunny32 · 15/07/2022 00:05

It's such a difficult one with schools because children need their education, many parents need schools as childcare in order to work, it's a safe place for vulnerable children but if the environment is unsafe to work and educate in (which they will be), how is that fair on anyone?! In my school, it will mean 30 children in cramped classrooms with no air conditioning and barely any shade outside.

A sensible decision would be to start school at 8am next week and finish before midday.

Yet another heatwave thread….

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/07/2022 00:28

I get no choice but to work outdoors in those temperatures.

Lucky you who can work in the shade.

IGotItInTheSales · 15/07/2022 00:43

So who will look after these kids who suddenly finish school at midday?

Parents at work...

I'm dreading it and wouldn't blame anyone for staying off work - whatever their profession.
Personally I'm more worried about being at home. I live in a flat and it was 26 degrees in my bedroom last night, and that was with windows and doors open and two fans going.

hesbeen2021 · 15/07/2022 07:34

I work for an almost minimum wage driving around 100 miles a day to visit and support clients with MH difficulties. My car doesn't have air con. I've asked if we have an contingency plans for extreme weather and was told No. I asked how I can safely work and received a shrug.
So I guess I'll be working as usual. However it doesn't sit right and I'm not sure who would take responsibility if a client died from heat stroke after being in my car. I've suggested already to clients that I don't think it'll be sensible to drive but many are so very set in their ways that shopping on a Tuesday needs to be shopping on a Tuesday whether it's snowing or 35 degrees
Ho hum

Very good and informative thread here

www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

Covers all these points, and has really good explanations of the meteorology -why the modelling is unprecedented - and the politicking round level of heat warning.

LittleBitFunny32 · 15/07/2022 07:26

So what do parents do on the continent?

Have the school day set differently, or have buildings designed for heat (because of the different climate)

It's just like why Canada doesn't come to a halt in 6in snow but Britain does. Your infrastructure is set to deal with your usual climate.

We are going to need to both
a) cut consumption to do our bit to reduce global warming (the aggregate of small actions becomes vast if repeated many times) and support global initiatives
b) work out what will be least painful to cut to pay for the evolving new infrastructure that copes better in the heat. Last massive school rebuilding programme ran throughout the 00s. Shame so many buildings were given inadequately opening windows then

Ollybob · 15/07/2022 07:42

I'll just be working, have Tuesdays off at the moment, no air con, hot and stuffy in parts of the building and also have to work outside at times (sales/retail)
Not much I can do except drink plenty and take it a bit easy. Luckily my work isn't too fast paced and some things will just have to take longer. Provided the customers we do have are looked after this weekend back of house can wait, especially the upstairs jobs!

When we lived in a country where school was 7.30am -1pm... the standard working day was 6.30am-2pm.

Siameasy · 15/07/2022 07:52

Most occupations don’t have the luxury of deciding it’s a bit uncomfortable so I just won’t go in. DH is a police officer. They had to search a large premises the other day in all their search gear. Honestly stop being so lame it’s a few days

Other children's safety isn't the OP's top priority, her own children are.

If the school don't have enough staff to open then school management will have responsibility for that.

It could be record-breaking heat. What is this contrarian obsession with pretending it's business as usual?

piefacedClique · 15/07/2022 10:59

Many families of school pupils will vote with their feet and not send their children in. We are not due weather as hot in wales but I’m dreading going to school next week.
