Next Monday/Tuesday 36 degrees!

LittleBitFunny32 · 14/07/2022 23:42

So the weather is now showing 36 degrees for next Monday and Tuesday for where I live in the south east. Our country is obviously not geared up for these temperatures. I work in education and am seriously considering not going in next Mon/Tues as I know it will be torture in the classroom. I won't be sending my children to school either.
Is anyone going to change what they do next week? Not go to work? Stay inside? Not send children to school? Change mode of transport? Spend all day in an air conditioned supermarket? 😁

I appreciate that the country and workforce can't just stop for a heatwave but at the same time, how can we carry on as normal when we're not equipped for these conditions.

My kids school have air con in their classroom which is amazing in this heat so they'll definitely be going in. My work have decided to shut the (also air-conditioned) office due to the heatwave and make us work from home on Monday and Tuesday. So I'll be stuck in my boiling hot spare room working on a laptop. Why????

PinkiOcelot · 15/07/2022 11:04

Yet another of these threads 🙄

Other children's safety isn't the OP's top priority, her own children are.

If the school don't have enough staff to open then school management will have responsibility for that.

Lets be honest now, ops priority is having a couple of days off work for no good reason.

OhmygodDont · 15/07/2022 11:13

We are now in the red zone. Our secondary have finally said no ties or blazers for the two days. I’ll see how the children are the morning of.

You're a teacher and you're really going to bunk off just because it's hot for 2 days?

There is now a red weather warning. It's going to be dangerously hot for UK conditions (it doesn't matter if such heat is normal in other countries, the UK isn't other hot countries - countries like Denmark or Norway would be taking such temperatures super seriously too). Schools should close and events should be postponed.

Was your school open when we had the last red weather warning in February? If not, ask them why this is different.

Our school wasn’t in a red zone then only amber for winds. It’s funny because they do close for an inch of snow on the floor.

Ignoring the fact that inescapable heat is different from a storm, some schools did close for that.

Faciadipasta · 15/07/2022 11:20

Wow I've never seen a red warning in my area before!
Those saying schools should close - surely that should be on a case by case basis, not a blanket decision??
My kids (state) school have air con in the classrooms. We don't bloody have that at home! They'll be a lot better off in school.
I'd definitely prefer to be in my nice cool office as well but the bosses have inexplicably decided to close for the 2 days due to the heat.

cecilthehungryspider · 15/07/2022 11:21

The forecast is 39C on Monday and 40C on Tuesday where I am. The classrooms at our primary school are invariably hotter than outside, by virtue of having 30 + hot bodies in them, but there's no real shade outside so if they go outside they will burn. I feel so sorry for the children and staff trying to work in that heat.

cecilthehungryspider · 15/07/2022 11:22

If schools are lucky enough to have aircon then the children are probably better off going in.

JustFrustrated · 15/07/2022 11:23

I'll be working. So will DH. Kids going to school as usual.

My work meeting did just get changed to Teams instead of f2f, as it involved 3 of us driving to London for it.

DH will be outside all day for his meetings, literally on a solar farm. So that'll be fun for him.

As his cars AC just broke and BMW can't get it fixed til later in the month, he'll be taking mine instead though.

Ohmydayssilleople · 15/07/2022 11:27

Well hopefully my work colleagues will be more professional and come to work!!
The elderly need to be cared for and not working is NOT an option!!

Mamamia7962 · 15/07/2022 11:28

Oh fgs - Back in the heatwave of 1976 there were 15 consecutive days when the temperature was 32 degrees or more, and the highest recorded temperature was 35.6.

I'm old enough to remember that summer. I went to school as normal as did all the other kids. Not sure there was any amber or red warnings back then. That was before the world went mad though!

I blame social media and 24 hour news reports for driving people into a frenzy.

Jesus. It’s a couple of days. British people at their finest. Moan, moan, moan. Can’t wait for the bad weather threads 🤦🏻‍♀️

Red warning of extreme heat
Starts: 00:00 BST on Mon 18 JulyEnds: 23:59 BST on Tue 19 July
An exceptional hot spell on Monday and Tuesday leading to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure.

  • Population-wide adverse health effects experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to serious illness or danger to life. Government advice is that 999 services should be used in emergencies only; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.
  • Substantial changes in working practices and daily routines will be required
  • High risk of failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment, potentially leading to localised loss of power and other essential services, such as water or mobile phone services
  • Significantly more people visiting coastal areas, lakes and rivers, leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents
  • Delays on roads and road closures, along with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel, with significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays
Issued at: 10:28 BST on Fri 15 July

I know I’m fortunate to have the choice but if the forecast still says 36 I will suggest to mine they stay off. For one of them in particular the building is so badly designed to cope with heat.
poor teachers but I’m sure they’d thank me for having one less body in the classroom! And it’s the last week fgs. They’re not going to miss much and not going to be taking much in anyway in that heat.

floweringpoppies · 15/07/2022 11:32

@LittleBitFunny32 great idea about changing times but just not possible with buses etc all having to change too. Too much of an organisational nightmare!!

floweringpoppies · 15/07/2022 11:32

Oh and I won't be keeping my children off school either 🙄

drinkingwineoutofamug · 15/07/2022 11:34

Nhs staff here . Ward has a covid outbreak (again) infection control have told us to open windows (sorry how we laughed as most windows don't open) and not to use fans. We aren't allowed drinks in our bays and have been told to leave them in the office. Which is fine if you have another member of staff in your bay whilst you leave to get a drink.
It was 32c yesterday in my bay according to the thermometer.
I drank a whooping 500ml all shift. We are in scrubs due to the covid and 2 pairs of gloves (they rip) ffp3 , visor as patients coughing and the usual sleeved gowns.
My scrubs started off light blue and were navy at the end of the shift.

DorchaAndLouis · 15/07/2022 11:35

I lived in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia where it's often over 40C and got used to it. Everwhere is air-conditioned, even the water in swimming pools is cooled, homes have small windows and tiled or stone floors. The children went to school in air-conditioned buses, started early and finished at lunch time.

Here in the UK we're not geared up for extreme heat and those kinds of temps in the UK would be horrendous if they went on for any length of time.

Sillystripytail · 15/07/2022 11:36

My son's preschool have just announced that they're going to be closed for the two days. I'm lucky that I don't work though so I can be at home with him. I'll let him in the garden before the temperature gets too high but otherwise we'll just be staying in with a fan!

I feel for anyone who has to be outside or working without air con!

That sounds hellish 😥

Pruella · 15/07/2022 11:37

My local forecast is 38 for Monday. I’ll be keeping my 7 year old off if it’s that hot - I’m not prepared to do the 20 minute unshaded school run at 3 pm in that sort of weather. Plus he’ll just spend the day sitting in the shade with some colouring or something he may as well do that at home.

Our school is fab and will do what they can for them but it seems pointless to add to the bodies in the classroom if I can keep him at home.

Let me guess, you're one of those "covid is just a cold, all those old people would have died anyway, we need to get on with life" people?

PatientlyWaiting21 · 15/07/2022 11:48

Ugh I’m so jealous, I’m in Scotland, no forecast of a heatwave for us!
