Or do other people also get Heat Wave Anxiety?

As I'm getting older, I'm enjoying heat like this less and less and have noticed that actually, when the atmosphere is so hot and heavy like this, I feel quite anxious.
Anyone else??

Imightbe · 12/07/2022 08:20

My biggest anxiety is the knowledge that myself and colleagues are going to be working Sun/ Mon in a care home with no air conditioning and trying to keep ourselves and residents safe!!
Absolutely bloody dreading it TB H ….was absolutely horrified reading a thread yesterday by an OP whinging ,about keeping cool ,WFH !

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/07/2022 08:30

Yeah if you’re working from home you really cannot complain

you dress how you want, drink what you want and when etc etc

Teder · 12/07/2022 09:03

Of course this weather is lovely when you’re by the sea or a lake and can just chill, eating ice cream and relaxing and drinking cool drinks.
It’s much less fun when you have to wear certain clothes for your job, you work in hot environments, you have to wear a mask all day, you’re rushing around doing the usual my day life stuff or you use public transport that’s not air conditioned etc.
I’m not anxious but it’s not a bundle of joy when trying to get on with day to day life. The infrastructure isn’t built for excessive temperatures. I’m not complaining, it’s just the situation.

It’s literally a medical thing:

Heat & anxiety

This is so interesting, thank you

You obviously haven't wfh in a central London flat with no air con.

luckily, I have an air con unit arriving today. I cannot wait.

SleeplessInEngland · 12/07/2022 10:21

I don't blame you for being anxious about a future in which multiple 30+ days in a row are the base level. And god knows what on top of that.

@Annoymousy

we’ve been having heatwaves since time began , often longer and hotter than what we are experiencing now.

and actually this year until now we’ve had a shit summer weather wise - unseasonably cold and cloudy.

so I’m not gonna get too worked up about climate change based on this weather

Erm we're on track to break our all time heat record.

Are you a climate change denier?

TheLostNights · 12/07/2022 11:38

@Silverswirl Still showing up as 27C next Wednesday. So still bloody hot. I'm in London and it's absolutely grim.

Sparklingbrook · 12/07/2022 11:51

The sun hasn't appeared here yet and we have light rain (Worcestershire) so the forecast isn't always spot on.

I've stopped looking at the forecast, it's similar here, muggy as hell and over cast, 2 seconds of rain.

Great, well if you're not concerned I guess the planet has nothing to worry about. Someone tell all the scientists!

Throughtheroof · 12/07/2022 14:35

It makes me so anxious - I'm slightly relieved that others feel that too. I thought I was just bonkers.

The rain has cleared the sun has just come out briefly and according to the car it's 24 degrees. I do look at the forecast as a general idea, but it's often inaccurate.

PrincessesRUs · 12/07/2022 14:36

I do - it makes me feel really panicked about climate change and how our country isn't built for heat waves

Yes it is horrible if you are in a city I agree.
I think after Thursday though it will cool right down

Silverswirl · 12/07/2022 15:07

Next Thursday I mean

PaperTyger · 12/07/2022 15:11

I'm also extremely worried about it op and I'm terrified I may have an ear infections brewing and I can't get medical help to look at my ear!
I just need a professional to tell me if it's an infection or wax. I'm really panicking about it.

I'm trying to sort out how we can keep cool on Sunday,I'm terrified about fires,it seems lots of people are having bonfires!

PaperTyger · 12/07/2022 15:12

When I look at met office weather it's shows 33 where I am on Sunday.

Where is this 35 supposed to be?

Also smokers! Accidently settings things alight.

I’m not sure what everyone is going on about?
I am in the SE. Historically one of the hottest parts of the SE.
Yes it’s hot at the moment but this is only the 1st or possibly second 30+ day we’ve had. There are 2 more forecast during the coming week. After that the heat goes right down and we all know when the school holidays start the crap weather starts.
It will be cloudy and drizzly for most of august I expect like it is almost every year.
Why are people in such a flap? Mind you, it’s the same every summer on MN so I don’t know why I’m surprised. A week of hot July sunshine and the sky is falling in.
As Peter Kay once said - Have a Solero and shut the f**k up will you. 🤣

seperatedmum · 12/07/2022 16:15

yes oppressive- that's the word- real end of the world feeling to me. feels dangerous but not in an exciting way like a thunderstorm or heavy snow forecast. just threatening and depressing to me.

That's how I feel too, I really hate it. If I'm by the sea or a pool I'm fine, it's every day life while so hot that's so difficult.

Silverswirl · 12/07/2022 16:19

SagittariusDwarf · 12/07/2022 07:26

Exactly! Pretty sure my boss would be totally fine with me skipping off to dip in and out of a lake all day... travelling in my non-existent air conditioned car...

meanwhile, in the real world, I am firing up my laptop for another day of working in my stuffy flat....

Well no, you can’t when working. But it’s a 2 week+ heat wave so hopefully you would have a day off at some point or just a couple of hours? There are streams, rivers and outdoor liod’s / pools all over the country and even more so the SE.
If all else fails, dunk a light piece of clothing (ie dress or tshirt) until cold water, wring out and wear it wet.
Really helps to cool down.

Silverswirl · 12/07/2022 16:25

NCHammer2022 · 12/07/2022 07:21

Of course heat isn’t that bad if you can spend all day pissing about by a lake. But it’s oppressive and difficult when you have to deal with small children, go to work, take public transport, wear a work uniform etc. And your plan doesn’t really help with the heat overnight either which is the worst part for me.

are you closing curtians and windows on the sunny side of your property upstairs during the day to keep the heat out then opening them at night? Do you have back door and front window open for the breeze to pass through?
what fan do you have for inside?
Could you save up to buy an air con unit for next year?

Silverswirl · 12/07/2022 16:27

Also, get a small towel and make it damp. Or use a tshirt or summer dress- make it damp. Wring out well and drape it over you when laying down in bed. Put the fan on so it’s blowing on to you.

PaperTyger · 12/07/2022 16:27

@Imightbe

How awful!
I hope it's a good care home and that they are pulling out every stop to make it easier for the residents!
It's bad enough for me ,and I'm so far able bodied etc.
I've worked in nursing homes and it was horrendous, the poor elderly people just stuck relying on others.

Someone on here said they use pets cooling mats on themselves,I wonder if that would help?
