Does your DC primary school allow squash through a hot day?

Sent my DC with a non- see through bottle with juice in today as since weaning and trying - DC has never drank plain water. Teacher removed the bottle stating water only in the day which will be provided with their own water bottles from school and juice only at lunch time.

AIBU or should this rule be relaxed during heatwaves?

Our school is water only, and I don't think that's unreasonable.

BigYellowElephant · 11/07/2022 09:07

I would deal with this urgently as schools don't allow juice- many won't allow it at lunch either. Has your DC gone all year without drinking through the day? School should be working with you to resolve this, depending on additional needs obviously

Sunnyjac · 11/07/2022 09:08

Water only at ours

EssexSerpent · 11/07/2022 09:08

Water only at our school.

Ostryga · 11/07/2022 09:08

I’d get a meeting with the school as your child can’t go all day with only having one drink at lunch. DD’s school is water only, but relaxes the rules for children with additional needs.

Lazypuppy · 11/07/2022 09:08

Standard imo to just allow water at school, maybe this will help get your child to drink water if there is no other choice? You should be working with the school and your child to get them drinking water

WestIsWest · 11/07/2022 09:09

Water only at our school. They say it’s bad for their teeth to be drinking juice throughout the day and also if it gets spirits it’s very sticky.
I’d speak to the SENCO if your DC genuinely will not drink any water at all and try to get permission for very diluted juice when it’s this hot.

mizzo · 11/07/2022 09:09

Our primary will allow them to drink squash or juice if that's what is sent in the bottle but they can only refill with water.
Also if they have anything other than water they can't have it on their desks in case of spillages, they can have water whenever they want.

RaleighDurham · 11/07/2022 09:09

Absolutely not. You wouldn't believe the number of times bottles get spilled and sticky squash or juice is a nightmare to clean up and leads to ant invasions and all sorts.

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 11/07/2022 09:10

Water only

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/07/2022 09:10

A water only rule seems perfectly acceptable. Children shouldn’t be drinking nothing but sugary/artificially sweetened drinks throughout the day.

Sherrystrull · 11/07/2022 09:10

No it is a rule for a reason. Spillages cause massive sticky messes on the carpet and tables.

What does your child normally do for a drink at school?

I found that reducing squash over a period of time and making it gradually weaker and weaker helped my dc to drink water at school.

Jules912 · 11/07/2022 09:11

At my DC's school it's water only, even at lunch.

Does the OP’s DC have additional needs?

Just give him flavoured water?

RaleighDurham · 11/07/2022 09:12

I don't allow water ON desks either - because of the inevitable spills ruining work/laptops etc. And if the bottle has been in the freezer overnight, you get condensation rings too, which also ruin paperwork.
They can have the bottle either on the floor (protected in part by the table leg) or, if they can't cope with that, then in a crate by the sink. They can take swigs whenever they like during independent work sessions, but not when I'm actually teaching.

Just give him flavoured water?

Still sticky when spilt.

CardiffMam · 11/07/2022 09:14

It's water only in our school too.

Svara · 11/07/2022 09:15

Just put some lemon or mint in the water to improve the taste? Understand no squash or juice.

parenthood1989 · 11/07/2022 09:15

Still sticky when spilt.

I was thinking more of ensuring the child didn't dehydrate in this heat.

Our primary school never had any strict rules about this. They asked that children took water, not juice but they would never take a drink from a child. How bizarre.

DockOTheBay · 11/07/2022 09:15

What about flavoured water?

Most schools say water only, ours does, but I know at least 2 parents who send them with flavoured water or very weak clear squash such as apple or lime.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/07/2022 09:16

Yes.

Only fizzy drinks discouraged at our school.

TheSoundOfLunch · 11/07/2022 09:16

There is no “additional need” that means a child should have a sugary drink rather than water.

ladydoris · 11/07/2022 09:17

water only. Mine is a camel...

DockOTheBay · 11/07/2022 09:17

The Twinings Cold Infusion teabags add a bit of flavour but don't have sugar or sweetener so wouldn't be sticky?
