Sisters new puppy

OhSwe3tBaby · 11/07/2022 08:00

I gave birth on Wednesday after a very hard pregnancy. Then on Friday out of the blue my sister buys a new puppy. My sister still lives at home with my parents. This is my seccond child, I moved out of my parents a few years ago.

Yesterday I went round my mums for the afternoon, all my siblings were there with their children too, playing in the pool and we ordered some food, sat in the garden. I got there later than others and when I arrived my sisters new puppy is sat on the only shaded chair around the table, I had to move a chair away from the table to sit with my newborn in the shade. The whole time we were there the topic was about the new puppy and only a few family members had brief holds with my newborn but all seemed to fuss and hold the puppy for alot longer.

I just feel like my newborns limelight of beeing new to the family has been stolen by my sisters new puppy and it was selfish of her to get a new puppy the week I give birth. She had also previously offered to take a few days off after I gave birth and my partner had gone back to work to help me and when I mentioned it she said she's taking a few days off over the next few weeks to be at home with her new puppy and I can come round to her if I wanted.

Yeah, I would've been more interested in the puppy but then I don't like babies.

😂 Me too.

Fairislefandango · 11/07/2022 10:18

Babies are only endlessly fascinating when they're your own! Once people have cooed briefly at the new arrival, a newborn isn't very interactive. Puppies on the other hand...

Irishfarmer · 11/07/2022 10:19

I'm expecting my first this week, I think I would feel the same. Even though we know really that no one is as interested in our baby as we are. I genuinely think my FIL will still be more interested in our dog who he adores!! Until the baby is old enough to interact with him properly.

I would have been really unimpressed with them not moving the puppy off the shady chair for me though. Surely pup could have sat on someone's lap or under the table. Emotions are high but I would try put it out of your mind.

Congrats on the baby

spiderlight · 11/07/2022 10:19

The date when a puppy comes home isn't generally in the new owner's hands. If the puppy is from a responsible breeder, she might have been on a waiting list for months or even years, and then the pups' breed, age and development will determine when the breeder lets them go, so it probably won't have been a deliberate decision to upstage you. Somebody should have sorted you out a seat in the shade as soon as you arrived though!

HELLITHURT · 11/07/2022 10:24

Yes YABU, but it's early days and understandable!

FictionalCharacter · 11/07/2022 10:26

YABU, but people are being unnecessarily harsh on this thread. Congrats on your new baby!
Someone should have moved the puppy off the chair though. It’s not OK to leave a dog sitting on a chair when you need a seat, that’s just rude.

SarahSissions · 11/07/2022 10:28

You don’t really choose when to get a new puppy. Its not like going to Tesco, she will have brought it home in Friday because that was 8 weeks after it was born. Get a grip.

Musti · 11/07/2022 10:29

I love babies (I have 4 of my own) but unless they’re my own newborns, I would find puppies far more fun and cute than a newborn. Congratulations, the puppy will grow up in a few months whereas your baby will have a cute toddler/child pager for years and will end up with loads of attention. Your baby isn’t aware now anyway so it doesn’t matter.

ImAvingOops · 11/07/2022 10:34

I get it OP. You have just created a whole new person and it would be nice if your family showed some interest. And looked after you a bit - it's exhausting and painful and new mums should be spoilt and fussed over.

I do think the date wasn't in your sisters control though, so don't be thinking she did it on purpose. And she does have to stay home with the puppy - it's needs are not dissimilar to a newborn baby's. It's just poor coincidence of timing.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 11/07/2022 10:37

YABU. Babies are boring. They eat, shit, cry and sleep.

Of course your family love your baby. Having an exciting, energetic puppy there doesn't change that.

It's just babies are like potatoes with emotions and puppies are like a bundle of fun.

You are telling a woman who had a baby less than a week ago to "get a grip".

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 11/07/2022 10:47

A puppy is stealing your newborn's limelight. Please read that again, and consider how ridiculous a thing that is to get upset about. I hope you see sense once your hormones calm down a little.

Mellowyellow222 · 11/07/2022 10:48

I do understand - but …. The timing of a new puppy can be quite difficult. They are usually ordered ina Eva me and you take them when the are eight weeks old.

I am sure you sister didn’t do this deliberately or even think you would have an issue with her new puppy.

puppies will grab attentions. New horns can be a bit intimidating.

I do think it’s your hormones talking and in a few months you will look back and laugh at how annoyed you were😊.

congratulations on the new baby.

NellesVilla · 11/07/2022 10:49

Missing the point entirely, but what breed of dog? I’d gravitate towards the puppy but then again I dislike babies and love dogs 🐕

TheOrigRights · 11/07/2022 09:23

OP, I would have sat with you in the shade with your precious new baby. I'd rather cuddle a baby than play with a puppy, and also acknowledge that as fun as a new pup is (especially for children) I would be aware that YOU need some care and love having just given birth.
I'm sorry you're getting such a hard time on here - people are almost sneering at you as if you are ridiculous to expect your family to celebrate the arrival of your baby. Take care of yourself xx

I agree.

Some of the comments here are absolutely disgusting, like a competition to see who can sneer the most at a woman who has just given birth. ALL mums and newborns need fussing over whether it's the first baby or the fifth. OP you are so NOT unreasonable to expect some care and attention from your family!

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 11/07/2022 10:52

I do have to say that I think these things are always part of a bigger story. It's not normal to have a family visit and everyone ignores the new born baby (and new mother) - if that's what happened. Puppy or not. So is your family generally unsensitive to you? Do you and your sister have some kind of competitive dynamic? Because being jealous of a puppy is ridiculous, so I can only assume that there is much more to this....

Floralnomad · 11/07/2022 10:53

YABVU and a bit ridiculous , newborns are very dull unless they are your own , puppies are fun ( cute , furry , playful )

luckylavender · 11/07/2022 10:54

ShirleyPhallus · 11/07/2022 08:12

Puppies are much more interesting than newborns, sorry OP. Plus they’re only at that tiny puppy stage for such a short period compared to babies

Give me a newborn any day to a new puppy. No contest.

nothingshappeningatall · 11/07/2022 10:55

YANBU

it’s easy for others to say oh it’s nothing or this isn’t a big deal but I would bet your sister has form for this kind of thing? I have a similar (toxic) family set up

Best thing you can do is distance yourself as people like this will feed off your reaction

nothingshappeningatall · 11/07/2022 10:56

And of course on MN you’re going to get more people saying they prefer puppies 🙄

WinterMusings · 11/07/2022 10:56

redtshirt50 · 11/07/2022 08:05

I would probably be more interested in a puppy than a newborn - they are a lot more interactive / fun to play with.

Tbh I would probably have been glad I wasn't the center of attention and could just rest.

I think YABU

It is annoying about the days off, but she is right that she can't leave the puppy.

It's also not like you can (normally) just pick a puppy and get it next week - so I assume she's known the date the puppy would come for a while?

You can if you're the type of idiot that buys one off gumtree etc.

id feel sorry for the puppy in all of this.

wetotter · 11/07/2022 10:57

The timing would have been settled about 8-12 weeks ago. Because your DSis would have had to have been accepted for buying one of the litter when the dam was in pup or newly delivered, and of course she can't control when the bitch would be in season.

The only think your family did that could be criticised was not moving the chair for you.

And how lovely for your DC to be the dog's special human cousin of exactly the same age!

(ie you can't do a damned thing about it, so may as well find some positives)

BackToTheTop · 11/07/2022 11:00

I'm afraid puppies are far more entertaining than new born bandies to everyone except the parents.

Sorry op, I think you abu. Your life will of course revolve around your new baby, but no one else's does

How rude. On what planet is a dog more valued than a human ?? A newborn human plus and adult woman who has just given birth and who is physically and emotionally fragile ??

But it’s MN any excuse or opportunity to devalue humans to fit a wider agenda. Just in case🤔
