My sons grandmother thinks I'm being unfair to my 2 year old for "forcing " Him to wear swimming costume in the pool?

My reasons behind this are I was Molested by my neighbour from 5-9 years old. I want to protect my son, he does not need to be naked in my opinion but am I being too over protective?

My other issue is I don't want him in the garden when his papa is cutting the grass because he tries to touch it when it's running and I'd much rather him stay in house and then go out when it's all done but his grandmother ignored me and took him out anyways after I said no and I caught her letting him pull on the string that starts the lawnmower! Please tell me your options am I being too over protective?

"Nudity is chavvy and lower class"

Blokes walking around town? Totally. Kids in their own back gardens?! Get a fucking grip you stuck up prude!

Nudity is chavvy and lower class. Only chav men walk around shirtless. Only chav children walk around naked.

Listen to yourself.

Sorry it just is, same as boys with no shirts on

YANBU OP It's bad manners to run around naked, even in your own home.
By making your children wear swimming trunks, you're teaching them basic decency and respect for themselves.

Sorry it just isn't! I agree that walking round in the street with no shirt isn't acceptable, but a little kid in their garden with no clothes is totally normal. I say this as someone who isn't overly comfortable with nudity in general.

mumbol · 10/07/2022 16:27

I've never got the whole kids must run around naked thing.
Mine burn too easily anyway but I find it icky when nephews and nieces sit on the chairs etc with bare bottoms.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/07/2022 16:30

IMO you’re being a bit prudish over the nudity. My elder Gdcs are rather older and often use their mini swimming pool naked. To me it’s lovely for them - they’ll be self conscious soon enough. The youngest, only 2, is often in the garden naked when it’s warm enough.

The lawn mower is a different matter! Don’t touch! should be the rule.

Damm I'm lower class and chavvy, nothing wrong with a bit of skinny dipping I quite enjoy the freedom of it myself.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 10/07/2022 16:51

I was very liberal about it too. But then I discovered someone had been taking photographs of a small female relative aged 7 or so and I changed my approach.

Really.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 10/07/2022 16:53

On holiday. In the garden.
After that I wouldn't do it every again and would advise all parents not to. It's a shame but it happens.

oakleaffy · 10/07/2022 17:04

String start lawn mowers are so dangerous!
any mower is..
I understand re Nudity- It always makes me uncomfortable to see naked kids if they are overlooked and can be filmed.

BuffyFanForever · 10/07/2022 17:07

i disagree with others here. Wearing a swimming costume is perfectly acceptable. Not just because it makes you feel better, it protects him from the sun and also I agree that being naked where others can see is inappropriate! You want to keep him safe and don’t want him near a dangerous machine at a very young age! I think you are NOT being unreasonable at all! So sorry to hear of your horrible experience. X

So do you believe women should cover up to stop being looked at, and if they're looked at then it's their fault for wearing revealing clothes?

Yes. An adult in their garden in a skimpy bikini (or nothing at all) can make that choice for themselves. A young child can't. Sex perverts are everywhere. You are rather naive to imagine that saying it's not your fault will stop it from happening. Presumably you leave your front door unlocked when you are on holiday as it's not your fault there are burglars?

PatchworkElmer · 10/07/2022 17:16

YANBU. I’ve just stopped my DC from running out to the paddling pool naked. Our garden is partially overlooked, I wouldn’t go out there naked. I also want them covered up to protect them from the sun.

girlmom21 · 10/07/2022 17:16

I don't like children being naked in the sun. I don't think it's necessary. As much to prevent avoidable injury or sunburn as anything else.

The boy has a swimming costume. There's no reason for him not to wear it as long as it's not too tight.

BungleandGeorge · 10/07/2022 17:19

personally I kept mine inside away from the lawnmower and had them in uv suits but the crux of the matter is what you want and she should be following your rules!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/07/2022 17:20

Kids should not be around a lawnmower when it's in use

It's too bloody hot to be naked , I wouldn't want to risk them burning rather than someone seeing them

alphapie · 10/07/2022 17:21

Your reasoning about the nudity it ott, but I also disagree with children running around naked. And agree with PP about it being a class indicator tbh.

The lawnmower you are definitely not being unreasonable about

bellamountain · 10/07/2022 17:25

I had my in laws round today who were laughing at my toddlers swimsuit and said to just let him run round in his birthday suit. It's one of those bodysuit things. They said he had more clothes on in the pool to when he was dressed and were saying he needs a base tan for when we go away 🙈. I don't deprive my kids of sun but it was full on sun at midday.

You're pathetic.

shrugitoffonemoretime · 10/07/2022 17:36

I've had all 3 of Mine age 5 and under in the garden starkers all weekend one minute they are in the paddling pool the next the sand pit - I don't want to be constantly changing clothes and nappies - they are happy as they are

Being naked in the sand sounds really uncomfortable

are you ok or maybe a little confused? Naked toddlers in their own garden with family playing in a paddling pool in the sun, is not “walking around” or chavvy.

i recall my daughter at 3. At the inlaws and the sprinkler was on, she asked if she could take her clothes off and play in it. I said yes. She stripped naked and ran about shrieking with joy in and out of the cold water as we all laughed and watched with affection, she was three and she clearly wasn’t “chavvy” .just an innocent little girl playing in the sun with her family.

when she tired herself out, I dried her off, sat her on my lap in the towel and then dressed her, it was a lovely afternoon .

id not allow it in public, but in the back garden with family, absolutely. If it makes us chavvy I’d see if as a compliment,

How stupid are they?
Ignorance in the UK to skin cancer is so scary. A tan is damage to the skin.

On of the most horrible funerals I've attended was a mum of two very young children. Her primary cancer was skin cancer.

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 10/07/2022 18:00

I mow the grass when dh at work. So have no choice but to have the 2 and 4 year old out there with me. Have done for the 3 years we've been here.
Its rare dh is home during day or when itd a reasonable hour to mow.
So i dont see that an issue i watch they don't go too close

The pool thing is personal choice mine wear uv things as they

Spanielsarepainless · 10/07/2022 18:18

My mother told me that when I was that age, in the 1960s, I was never allowed to run around naked. I had at least a pair of shorts on or my swimsuit. And I would never let a child anywhere near an electric lawnmower. It's far to easy to end up permanently mutilated, as a friend managed to cut off two toes. I don't think you are being over -protective.

Mariposista · 10/07/2022 18:21

Lawnmowers aren’t toys, so yes you are right to keep your son away from one.
I agree over swimwear when playing with water outside, or on a beach.
