Was I being overly sensitive? *TW animal death

So I live in a small Villiage, as a previous city dweller some of the downsides of living in the countryside have taken a while to get used to, such as cows waking us up at 5am, free roaming peacocks destroying our cars paint on the roof and general manure smells every now and again. But after 4 years we are getting there.

Last night a local farmer had 40 lambs killed, he thinks it was a dog attack, instead of just putting a normal post about it on the local FB group (like he and other farmers have before) his son instead decided to share 20 graphic photos of the dead lambs along with the post asking for information or if anyone saw anything.

Now I was pretty upset to be scrolling through FB and to then see images of lambs ripped apart, insides everywhere, pilled on top of each other and commented this on the post. Reminding him that there are teens and young people in the group and it's maybe not the best thing to put on here, to be fair I'd expect many people, adults included would feel upset seeing these images on their FB feed.

I was jumped on by the farmer, other farmers in the village, the 'we've been here for 30 years, go back to the local city if you don't like it' lot and even accused of being the attacker, despite not owning a bloody dog.

I personally also think 40 lambs in one go is unlikely to be a dog attack, but didn't comment that of course.

Was I being unreasonable or overly sensitive to find this shocking and to maybe suggest it's a bit too much to post in a FB group where local children often post looking for summer work or weekend car washing for pocket money? Am I turning into one of those 'think of the children' people!

The OP has really embarrassed themselves with this thread. Not least because of a total lack of acceptance that they know not what they’re talking about.

They’ve shown a total lack of understanding of farming, they’ve assumed an authoritative tone when talking about something they do not understand (not a dog. What was it then? The beast of Bodmin Moor? Of course it was a dog. A dog can take down 150 sheep if they’re in enough of a frenzy when the sheep start panicking), a total lack of compassion for the impact on the farmer’s livelihood, and they’ve failed to see that a shocking photograph is exactly what’s needed to keep irresponsible dog owners away from livestock. The amount of people who let their dogs off around livestock is astonishing.

Back to town, I think OP. And perhaps get off social media if you’re so sensitive.

But this won't work either, that's the point

The only people with lose dogs round here are the farmers anyway, it's a bit of a moot point.

Late to the party but OP surely you must be aware of how ignorant you are coming across?

You really aren't aware that dogs can escape from their owners' homes at night and return? That they can hunt in a pack? That once they have tasted blood, they will keep repeating this behaviour until stopped?

Thats what my neighbours' dogs do. Or at least did, until the lead one was hit by a car on one of its escapes.

How on earth do you think that 40 lambs died in their own field?

I would guess that the farmer has seen loose dogs, hence the FB post.

Why on earth do you look at the images on FB if you are so distressed by them?

Unfortunately, practical life skills are part of being intelligent and unless you have the capacity to develop them, you will continue to show a deep lack of empathy in this. Do you have dogs by any chance?

And of course the graphic images will work, thats why people do them. After all, its got you paying attention and posting about it on mumsnet. Its quite an identifiable thread, so its got loads of attention already.

Considering the police in this instance didn't and actually refused to share the farmers post on their FB (as they usually do) kind of proves they also thought it was a bit much.

They typically just share the post directly to their pages to raise awareness, but not in this case.

With all due respect OP, don't ever consider taking up a career as a lawyer. You don't understand the basic differences regarding proof, evidence and adductive evidence.

"Thankfully someone else with an understanding of this issue has agreed and FB has agreed it's not suitable or appropriate for Facebook."

I don't understand why you didn't just report it when you first saw it and felt it was wrong. Why post at all?

Because I was hoping they'd see sense and remove the image, as now Fb has removed the entire post. Not just the image, so they lose out in that case.

lose out? What odd terminology.

I doubt that the farmers are as obsessed by FB as you. The losing out is the value of the lost lambs, not a FB post.

Do you have dogs?

Urg the wafts of smuggery here, 'they lose out'...🤨

@Ohfgswhat I’ve reported your post. Really nasty stuff. Despite what you thinking of the OP there’s no need for that. Remember there’s real human beings with feelings reading this.

CandidaAlbicans78 · 11/07/2022 22:11

Well you have posted on Mumsnet about it, so one could assume it had an impact, even if you hid the post after.

Ohfgswhat · 11/07/2022 23:12

Exactly, real human beings being effected by real life events....not SM wokeness! Goes both ways, but we have to read/listen to someone being offended day in, day out but can't respond. Have you had livestock ripped to pieces? Have you walked into a field expecting to count live lambs and found dead or dying creatures that YOU have to finish off for humane reasons. Bet not. Would I put my mutilated creatures on SM to try and stop the incoming madness, probably not, but can understand why someone would. Endless dogs, causing mayhem. Endless newcomers causing chaos. Have you walked into a field of livestock to find small kids shooting them with Nerf Guns, bet not. Mums standing there, in MY field, with My animals, thinking their Banshee children and un-trained dogs are doing no harm. Bet not. Complain, all you like if it makes you feel better.

YABU you can see bits of dead lamb in the supermarket.

😂 correct

manlyago · 11/07/2022 23:36

@Ohfgswhat no I haven’t and it sounds terrible. If that’s what has happened to you then I’m genuinely sorry. I can imagine how reading the OPs post must have made you feel. But I still think calling someone what you called the OP was uncalled for.
