I earn a 6 figure salary...

Just reading another thread and pretty much every post is going on about "6 figure salary" - as if this is some sort of meaningful marker.

But obviously there's a massive difference between someone on £100k and someone on £900k. So by "6 figure salary" are they just essentially saying they earn around £100k? If they earned £250k, how is it acceptable to describe that?

Are you always so patronising @5128gap?

TreePoser · 09/07/2022 16:07

I know what you mean @herehearher
This expression became a thing 35 years ago when Tom Cruise filmed The Firm, when to earn 100,000 was unimaginable.

Obviously over the decades it became more and more common. Not for me! I'm still flying the flag for 31k wow.

And grateful for it. But anyway, I am used to other people doing so much better than I have done financially that even I on my super modest salary would be a bit confused by the 'boast' of earning a six figure salary.

Lily073 · 09/07/2022 16:10

But frankly, a lot of the comments made by the people supposedly in this bracket don't really suggest a high level of education or exceptionalism.

Realistically, how would you be able to judge how 'exceptional' a person is on an anonymous forum? There is no way of making a judgement on how valuable their skill set is, or how much people would b prepared to pay for their knowledge.

No. I hope not. Perhaps I'm just meeting like with like. There have been some incredibly patronising posts on here from people purporting to be highly successful and implying that anyone who works as hard as them could achieve the same, which anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows is not true. Obviously not everyone fits that, so clearly I'm not talking about them.

I'm not. The comment referred to intelligence and education. If a person is both intelligent and educated I think its unlikely they would hold some of the views of some on here. But yes, they could be earning 6 figures for something that doesn't require intelligence and/or education.

easyday · 09/07/2022 16:41

@Perfect28 how can you say that? Immoral? Less helpful to society? Bollocks.

floweringpoppies · 09/07/2022 09:59

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'd love a 6 figure salary, so many can only dream of it!

It depends whether you include the pennies!

My husband is on a 6 figure salary, more than 100k and into 45% tax. Why would you specify how much? Beyond 60 % tax and onto 45% or just tipping into the 60% tax. I have to say though, you have a point. Between 100-125k a person would be wise to throw everything over 100k into a pension. The tax rate is pretty disgusting at 60% and it’s why much talent moves away. I don’t think it’s ever occurred to him to highlight his salary to be honest.

Get out of town 😂

Ive got no problem with ‘talent’ moving to other countries to inflict their self appreciation and lack to social conscious on some other poor saps.

strawberrylacey · 09/07/2022 16:56

Only already-rich middle classers in posh home county houses can even dream of getting 100k salaries.

SavBbunny · 09/07/2022 16:57

An interesting thread. I am a high earner. With bonus, £300k. I have also worked for minium wage in covid as I was self employed at the time. It was very hard physical work. I have also been in rented accommodation since the last crash as I had to move to care for my parent. I had to resign, use my savings and after he died had £30 to shop some weeks. No one was hiring and I was desperate. The recruiters could smell it!
However I am an expert in my field and I have gone on to have a track record of company turnarounds or sales under my belt. I now get lots of offers however with each job comes huge risk. I have to have a successful strategy or I am fired. Big money, big risks. And 16 hour days since I was 25. No tucking in my children or holidays off. Would I do it again ? No.
I am happy to pay my taxes. Make sure any pension is paid into a open market pension. Final salary schemes will not let you access that money at 55 without huge penalties!
Oh and I lived on a council estate as a child. Went to Oxford but no one knows.

EcoEcoIA · 09/07/2022 16:59

£1,000.00 is six figures.

went to Oxford.

That explains everything.

Nanananananana99 · 09/07/2022 17:00

Am you just have to look at some of the current/former cabinet to see how people with minus levels of intelligence and decency manage to get on in life and earn inflated sums of money for being completely useless!!!

Quite!

BunsyGirl · 09/07/2022 17:01

@strawberrylacey utter rubbish. I’m a Northern working class former free schools meal kid and my package is just short of £100k. My next role will most likely be over £100k. I work remotely so I can live anywhere in the country that I want.

Topgub · 09/07/2022 17:02

This thread just highlights everything wrong with society really.

Lots of very hard working husbands. Working very long hard hours with the little woman not able to earn anywhere near as much

Working very hard doing nothing of value yet still earning all the money.

While having the cheek to deny lower earners can work just as hard, in jobs more mentally and physically exhausting

SavBbunny · 09/07/2022 17:07

@strawberrylacey
I studied a subject that has no relation to my work.
I went there purely on the recommendation of my sixth form college in a scruffy town with the highest teenage pregnancy rate. I have no contact with anyone from that time. I was bullied and worse for my background. However I do have a high IQ and I wanted more. I piss off men because I am better than them at what I do. Don't insult another woman for their schooling that they worked hard for. That is jealousy.

I earn a six figure salary too 👍. All depends if I'm living in Fantasyland that day or how may zeros I add after the full stop. Life's usually about that one month ment in time you make a great decision or get that lucky break or have friend family in the in the right place.

People on shit wages often work a dam sight harder and longer than those on six figure salary's it's just they never had that break or opportunity.

What utter rubbish. Some people might get a step up but most work bloody hard to get where they are. i’m on a six figure salary and I can tell you I question whether is it worth it as I work constantly. My choice so I’m not complaining but don’t make out people don’t work to get where they get

I think you would be surprised and there are many people earning 100 k with few visible signs of a high household income. The lifestyle you are alluding to would require many multiples of that to maintain.

angelwings72 · 09/07/2022 17:37

I couldn't give a monkeys shit who earns a six figure salary. Why do people feel the need to brag about how much they earn, does it make them a better person than me who earns a mere £15 000 a year....NO 😤

Genuine question, how do you earn that much but have so little safety net?

PrimoPiatti · 09/07/2022 17:47

The only thing that matters is your outgoings in relation incomings.

Mr Micawber nailed it....

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 09/07/2022 17:49

20, 30 years ago - Maths and science were and are the subjects to do.

Doctor, engineer, Finance were and are the jobs to do.

Programming can be easily picked up by these individuals.

You don't need to be a psychic.

SavBbunny · 09/07/2022 17:51

@mizzo we did have a safety net (the infamous 6 figures) We live close to London. Our money ran out in year three. We couldn't access our pensions, no family to help us. Houses with accommodation for disabled people cost twice as much as they rely on a large footprint. My father refused to go into a home and we suffered an appalling situation with our dd. I then had two people to care for.
I only posted because it is my income, my story and it isn't only tech that pays. I am a decent person not a knob. I wanted to show women can earn big money but you can't have it all. I am happy to pay tax if it goes towards others less fortunate. I am not happy about MPs wallpaper tho!

Topgub · 09/07/2022 17:56

@angelwings72

Some higher earners genuinely think it does make them better.
