I earn a 6 figure salary...

herehearher · 09/07/2022 09:49

Just reading another thread and pretty much every post is going on about "6 figure salary" - as if this is some sort of meaningful marker.

But obviously there's a massive difference between someone on £100k and someone on £900k. So by "6 figure salary" are they just essentially saying they earn around £100k? If they earned £250k, how is it acceptable to describe that?

went to Oxford.

That explains everything.

What, that she worked hard to get into Oxford? Rather supports the theory that hard work pays off.

Topgub · 09/07/2022 18:02

@sst1234

Do you think only the 1% work hard or hard enough?

I earn a six figure salary too 👍. All depends if I'm living in Fantasyland that day or how may zeros I add after the full stop. Life's usually about that one month ment in time you make a great decision or get that lucky break or have friend family in the in the right place.

People on shit wages often work a dam sight harder and longer than those on six figure salary's it's just they never had that break or opportunity.

Sorry, you're talking rubbish.

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 09/07/2022 18:33

Wrong.

I'm a child of immigrants.
My social circle are mostly children of immigrants.

Our poor immigrant parents worked hard in crap jobs and bought their own houses and rental properties.

Me and my fellow immigrant stock are ok earners as stated earlier.

So if we can do it anyone can.

Your country, your language - you don't even have the barriers we had.

Work hard, study hard, believe in God, get paid well.
Life will throw many other negatives at you - might as well sort education out as it is free.

mizzo · 09/07/2022 18:54

@SavBbunny
We did have a safety net (the infamous six figures)
That's kind of what I mean.
It sound like you've had a really tough time though, sorry about your Dad and DD.

I'm not. The comment referred to intelligence and education. If a person is both intelligent and educated I think its unlikely they would hold some of the views of some on here. But yes, they could be earning 6 figures for something that doesn't require intelligence and/or education.

Ah yes. Intelligent people would only think the way you do. 🙄

Alliumpoppyrose · 09/07/2022 19:21

Haha 😂 half the replies to me thank you gave me a right laugh. May I say many of you are delusional, you honestly believe any one on a six figure salary only gets it because they work far harder and far longer hours than those that don't. What a complete load of bollocks.

As for those how said I'm jealous you don't have a clue about me or my life I chose to work doing what I do and I do not need the money I have been lucky in life but I am aware others do not get those breaks. Your six figure salary's say nothing ZERO about you apart from coming on MM trying to impress, no body cares! 😂

I work very hard for my non £100k plus salary - do a lot of unpaid hours (expected in my profession and industry) the higher I’ve risen the more work related stress I experience
I would love to take a step back, downsize, retire before I drop etc but I still have a hefty mortgage - care and pay for elderly DM - help out DC and friends and as a single income household don’t feel I have many options

FunDragon · 09/07/2022 19:32

In my experience it’s fairly uncommon to be a salaried employee earning over £200k. Partners in partnerships and business owners obviously can earn more but they aren’t salaried. So I think when people talk about a 6 figure salary they typically mean between £100k and £200k.

FWIW I earn over £100k. Salaried. I’ve definitely had a large amount of good fortune to have the opportunity to earn this much. But I’ve also needed to work very hard over the past ten years under hugely stressful conditions, particularly when I was junior. For example, sometimes not going home from the office for three days. Working multiple weekends in a row. Not leaving the office till 8 on a ‘good’ day. Cancelling holidays. Being expected to be on my emails and fully available in the evenings and at weekends and on holidays. Working till 3am on Christmas Eve. Logging on on Christmas Day. And that’s just what’s expected.

I suppose the real value of skills would be apparent in an apocalyptic situation. I always imagine the people in demand would be doctors, nurses, farmers, engineers, maybe some decent musicians and storytellers to cheer people up. Funny to think these might be the people we need most, but they are not the best paid. What a bizarre society we have created.By

How come God only helps 1%?

But your responses show you've clearly been affected by the posts on this thread. Why is that do you think?

AnaïsM · 09/07/2022 19:55

5128gap · 09/07/2022 15:50

That makes sense. But frankly, a lot of the comments made by the people supposedly in this bracket don't really suggest a high level of education or exceptionalism. There is often an astonishing level of naivety about the economy, and a very simplistic view of social mobility, that I struggle to associate with high levels of education and intelligence. Not all of course, there are some interesting and enlighting posts, but some I read and I admit to thinking...are you sure?

I see more examples the other way round, with people on lower wages certain that there’s no route to doing better.

Lots of people on higher incomes seem to have come from relatively normal beginnings.

gnilliwdog · 09/07/2022 19:58

@Lily073 well, it isn't right to connect money with personal worth. I am sure Jesus didn't recommend it. I walk with the goddess, and am not a Christian, but spiritual tenets are broadly similar.

AnaïsM · 09/07/2022 20:00

Topgub · 09/07/2022 17:02

This thread just highlights everything wrong with society really.

Lots of very hard working husbands. Working very long hard hours with the little woman not able to earn anywhere near as much

Working very hard doing nothing of value yet still earning all the money.

While having the cheek to deny lower earners can work just as hard, in jobs more mentally and physically exhausting

If people were doing nothing of value their employer wouldn’t likely pay them a very high salary. Companies aren’t keen to throw money at people who they don’t need.

AnaïsM · 09/07/2022 20:03

Topgub · 09/07/2022 17:56

@angelwings72

Some higher earners genuinely think it does make them better.

Going by posts on here they do seem to be nicer people. There are some very unpleasant posts from lower earners based on supposition and not much more.

I think higher earners in general are nicer people.

Topgub · 09/07/2022 20:08

@AnaïsM

That's probably because, statistically, there isn't.

Better is subjective any way

Topgub · 09/07/2022 20:09

@AnaïsM

What a weird bias

🤣

tartansl · 09/07/2022 20:13

So are you saying that when someone says they're on a 6 figure salary you should never be closer to £100k. Why would you ever say your actual salary?!

It's just a way to express something. It's usually pretty obvious you're not earning £999k in most circumstances of the explanation being used when you're actually earning closer to £100k anyway.
Why is it a problem?!

Alliumpoppyrose · 09/07/2022 20:15

@Lily073 To say the internet has been in use for around 29 years and yes I was one of those people at the start, I still never got round to learning troll language.

So I would suggest you up your game and at least put some effort into it if you are trying to act cleaver, because as of this moment its not showing. 🙄

It was a genuine question. You keep returning to this thread yet is has clearly upset you. Why would I need to 'act clever'?

Me: £390k (£250k base + £140k in bonus and stocks) = Solutions Architect

We both studied in our home country and post graduate (with scholarships) in UK (dh - LSE)/US(Harvard - me) and but I work for US company and DH advices international companies and some despots politicians/governments.

And no I do not think I am privilleged and hardly think about money except how to use it to give my children advantages we did not have.

But, yes, we have large houses in the UK, US and home country.

Sorry for poorer English - not first language.
