I earn a 6 figure salary...

552 replies

herehearher · 09/07/2022 09:49

Just reading another thread and pretty much every post is going on about "6 figure salary" - as if this is some sort of meaningful marker.

But obviously there's a massive difference between someone on £100k and someone on £900k. So by "6 figure salary" are they just essentially saying they earn around £100k? If they earned £250k, how is it acceptable to describe that?

OP posts:
WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 10/07/2022 19:46

There's an awful lot of 'I earn 6 figures, and I am RG uni educated blather blather' type posts, followed by 'but my husband earns soooo much more than me.' Why the desperation to tell everyone that your DH earns soooooooooo much money (or that you do?) Why do people think anyone gives a fuck about your DH's salary - OR yours?!?

I could earn £20,000 a year, or £200,000, I am not telling anyone because it's fuckall to do with anyone, and who gives a shit anyway? Confused I also agree with pps that people saying £100K doesn't go far after tax can bore off. Such a rancid insult to the many people on £15K, who have to go to food banks. Banging on about your wealth and high salary that you claim you have when SO many people are on the bones of their arse is crass, vulgar, and boorish.

I also agree with the poster who said, people who DO have money don't mention it, don't brag about it, don't say/how much they've got, and how much they earn, and don't prattle on about having a bloody RG university degree. Why do all these 'high earners' have a RG University degree? Confused Every. Single. Time!!!

And as for the posts prattling on about how it's possible that X % of mumsnetters COULD be on 6 figures.. Statistically yeah that could be true, but many of the ones on threads like this claiming it are not. The high earning professionals I know, do NOT spend half their waking hours fucking about on mumsnet, stealthbragging about little Tarquin's private school fees, and their RG University degree. Along with their hubster's £350K a year salary, his 75 hour week, and his 'long commute.' And how they themselves only earn half his salary -so, like just £175K a year. yawnage........ 🙄

@Crystalvas

This makes no sense.

Lots of people have 3 kids and don't earn anywhere near 100k.

Its nonsense to suggest 100k doesn't go far. Of course it does.

If you choose to spend it all, thats on you.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Lolabray · 10/07/2022 19:47

Lovely I’m on below average wage with 2 kids to feed

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 10/07/2022 19:44

@Crystalvas

Agree this poster is just nasty to you.
Bet she would not say that on a thread for women on benefits with 3 kids.

No she certainly wouldn’t. I think there are people on here for some sad reason enjoy being nasty.

Llamasally · 10/07/2022 19:52

@AnaïsM I’ve never understood this when it’s between £100-125k. I have heard it but don’t get it, nor why after £125 it’s better - could you explain?

Llamasally · 10/07/2022 19:53

@AnaïsM

tag fail, see previous! Thanks

Parentsofaprincess · 10/07/2022 19:34

Wow that is so judgemental and rude, truly shocking.

Indeed, not to mention that very few people would consider surgeons and consultants, head teachers and judges to be immoral and unhelpful to society, whilst almost certainly your burglar, local drug dealer and traffic warden are unlikely to command large amounts of respect.

That’s an awfully long post by someone who cares little about what people earn, about the topic of…..what people earn. Aside from being bitter, the lady doth protest too much.

Predicted response from someone who knows FUCKALL about me or what I earn. Hit a raw nerve did I?

riceuten · 10/07/2022 20:00

Humblebrag much? Here's a biscuit for earning over 100k, unlike 98.5% of the UK population and probably 90% of Mumsnetters. Affluent lifestyles aren't compulsory with this level of earnings, you don't have to buy Louis Vuitton or Moet & Hennessey much as people presume you should.

Bitter and highly strung. Not a good look. This is not Twitter, you know. Anyway, keep going, all the best.

This. ^ The stealth bragging on here which is very likely all bullshit anyway is crass and vulgar. Don't let it get you down. The vast majority of what these posters are writing is not true anyway. This site is full of fantasists, living a fantasy life, and posting about their fantasy university degrees, and fantasy salaries.

Sure, people with fancy degrees and fancy salaries exist, but they don't come on here, and they certainly would not be spending half their waking hours on here! People in a six figure a year job wouldn't be fucking around on mumsnet brag brag bragging about their 'wealth' and their hubster's HUGE salary! LMFAO!!! 😂

You need to calm down. Such a long post for someone who dosn’t give a crap 🤣 you so sound very bitter.

Pipsquiggle · 10/07/2022 20:07

The average household income for the UK is £36k. So the vast majority of people don't get anywhere near a 6 figure salary.

The biggest factor on how much money you will earn is which social class you are born into - which is so fucking depressing. Inequality is the worst it's been in decades.

My DH earns a 6 figure salary mainly because of the sector he works in (data) and his seniority / experience. So what?

I was brought up in one of the poorest boroughs in the country, however, my parents were white collar professionals and made sure we (me and my siblings) went to the local (relatively cheap) private school and got to university. We all left the area and only return to visit my DPs. The generational cycle of poverty is just awful and debilitating, I see it in the town every time I see my DPs.

Threads like these just annoy me as a lot of people have no idea about how this government has just systematically denied people to get on and move up the earning ladder - think of the residents of Blackpool and Jaywick - lots of capable young people buy without the skills and support to get on

@RudsyFarmer

If you choose to spend your wages on a huge mortgage, big bills and buying cars then that's a lifestyle choice. Your 100k is still going further than someone else's 30k.

@IVFPrayingForBioChild

@Crystalvas

Its hardly rocket science is it?

The average UK wage is around 30k.

If people on that can manage to live and raise kids, then so can people on 100k.

If you want your lots of money to go further, make different choices on how you spend it.
