I earn a 6 figure salary...

Just reading another thread and pretty much every post is going on about "6 figure salary" - as if this is some sort of meaningful marker.

But obviously there's a massive difference between someone on £100k and someone on £900k. So by "6 figure salary" are they just essentially saying they earn around £100k? If they earned £250k, how is it acceptable to describe that?

Whats the point if your post?

The point is you chose to have three children under five. Did you not research the cost of childcare before you embarked on this enterprise?

Very true. Lifestyle moves up and with that so does cost.

Not really, as life moves on theres more costs assiciated with it. Nothing to do with lifestyle just necessary costs.

Daffi · 10/07/2022 18:58

I used to earn a £125,000 now I earn £20,000 and I couldn't be happier. I don't do anything interesting or meaningful but I hated what I used to do

Topgub · 10/07/2022 19:00

@Crystalvas

This makes no sense.

Lots of people have 3 kids and don't earn anywhere near 100k.

Its nonsense to suggest 100k doesn't go far. Of course it does.

If you choose to spend it all, thats on you.

stuckonanlnertrainagain · 10/07/2022 19:02

Ok.I will bite

I earn about £120,00 but self employed. The last time I put it through a checker it said top 5% in uk and top 1% of women earn the same (it was slightly higher then)

I work 70 hours a week minimum , have Saturday off.

I employ staff which is a constant worry. I am a graduate from RG age mid 50s

My DH also RG graduate mid 50s has a base salary double mine and then typically a bonus to match. he works 9-5 Monday to Friday

My DC work on little above minimum wage- just graduated. they dont work 70 hours a week but also don't work 35.

Hours you work doesnt equate to what you earn

Lots of highly paid people work long hours
Employing people is shit, especially during cv19 which is why I am stopping.

I had no personal income for 16 months during the pandemic (so £150k less than usual) as the sector shut down.

I often think that I should leave my DH and live on benefits (would be eligible for PIP etc as I am very significantly disabled with a degenerative condition )

JustABloodyMinute · 10/07/2022 19:02

I must be living on another planet. I don't know anybody with a combined family income in six figures. We are lucky and not on the poverty line, I think of us as being in the "average" category (if you exclude the mega salaries). I would interpret anyone with six figure salary to be extremely well off.

Whats that got to do with it. I’m just making a point. I never said I couldn’t efford it. And you sound really bitter. Whats your problem.

Rufus27 · 10/07/2022 19:09

DP earned a six figure salary (through bloody hard work and commitment- no family ties nor red brick uni). Then during lockdown he was made redundant and ended up earning minimum wage in a very different job, as did many of his colleagues (his industry was annihilated and totally stopped recruiting).

Believe me, £100, 000 is a massive amount, a privilege, and gives a level of life security which isn’t possible on £10 an hour; to suggest otherwise is ridiculous.

CountryMouse22 · 10/07/2022 19:10

You'd get clobbered for tax though.

Robertplantgoddess · 10/07/2022 19:10

break or opportunity if they want it. I grew up on one of the roughest housing estates in Paisley. Google Ferguslie Park and you’ll see what I mean.

I worked 3 jobs to get myself through Uni and went on to do my PhD. Both DH and I earn 6 figure sums and he is also working class from a very poor background. It’s not about lucky breaks or knowing people in the right

Dont know how to quote but that is absolutely horse shit. I dont often get angry but you are basically saying i didn't want it enough to get the breaks. Sorry about that with my 94hour weeks that you know maybe addressed the sat night hospital issue or whatever. Should have just said nah mate. I need the breaks. Come back when im earning yeah .
Fucking hell

ScarlettnotOHara · 10/07/2022 19:11

My husband is on 6 figures, hospital consultant if you break it down to the extremely long, unsociable hours he works plus the taxes he pays it’s doesn’t seem that great ! I still find it unbelievable the amount professional footballers are paid, it’s pretty disgusting to be fair 😞

LadyHelenaJustina · 10/07/2022 19:12

I’m a high earner, but I disagree that the tax on high earners is too high. I have also worked my way up from a working class family, first to get a degree, worked hard, taken on significant responsibility and worked hugely long hours, but the main difference between me and a nurse is luck. So much luck. And now I am damned lucky to be in a high tax bracket, and I am pleased to be able to contribute to hospitals and schools and pensions and income support and everything that glues us together as a society.

Tim Minchin makes this point much better than me in his nine life lessons. I recommend it.

Honestly she’s right. It doesn’t go far. We have no holidays abroad, one one week holiday in the UK per year. I shop in Lidl and Aldi with lots of yellow ticket items thrown in. I have my hair done recur a tear, no rails or tans or eyelashes. We don’t eat out, we don’t get takeaways, I buy clothes in charity shops and school uniform comes from supermarkets. No branded items.

We have no debt and buy our cars outright. So that’s where some of the money has gone. Otherwise it’s mortgage payments and bills.

RudsyFarmer · 10/07/2022 19:18

*twice a year

madasawethen · 10/07/2022 19:18

That is one of the nice things about mumsnet and other anon forums, you don't really know anything about the other person, besides what they write.
You're not being judged for race, gender, education, wealth, appearance, etc.
I like that.

I think the term 6 figures just came about to mean making good money.

In my industry there are some who feel like failures for not having reached 7 figures yet. There have been more than a few complainers in a group I belong to whinging about how their company shares decreased from 1 million to 700k. I just scroll on past.

I'm puzzled how people truly think you can't make decent money without being a crook, already wealthy, or luck.
I'm also puzzled at how hard work is just associated with hours put in or how physical something is.

Hard work is also the impact it has and the number of people it affects.

WTAFhappened123 · 10/07/2022 19:24

@Raquelos you pay 40% tax on what u earn over 50k - so even though 100k sounds splendid it’s actually not as much as it sounds especially if you live in SE!

wheretogoshopping · 10/07/2022 19:28

Post tax On 100k you are taking home about 2.5 times the average

Half the people you pass every day will be on even less than that average

Pebble55 · 10/07/2022 19:29

I know lots of people in my profession on six-figure salaries and they all work their absolute arses off, way more than 40 hours a week and travelling all the time. I could chase similar money if I chose to work away all the time and never see my family. Instead I have a nice Monday to Friday job in a consulting office and I get to hang out with my daughter loads and do the childcare runs. The money isn't six figures but it's decent enough. Depends on your priorities I suppose.

Itisasecret · 09/07/2022 10:12

Sorry, that is bollocks.

My husband and I are both working class, the first to obtain degrees in our family. We work bloody hard for our qualifications and opportunities. I’ve been skint, homeless, lived in council housing, full benefits, the lot.

My husband is an extremely high earner, he worked hard to get where is is and he works bloody long, high pressured days to command his salary.

Enough with the bitter, sweeping statements. Green isn’t a nice colour. Plus, it’s utter crap.

command his salary 🥱

It's disingenuous to say it's not that much OP when it's 4 times the average and as another poster points out, 99% of people earn less. This post is basically a boast. The truth is though that the more you earn the likely your job is more immoral and or less helpful to society, two things I wouldn't be so proud of.

Wow that is so judgemental and rude, truly shocking.

I know there are people who work way more hours than they should. Thats not us we don’t have to work those crazy hours. So thanks very much our priorities are right where they should be.

You don't live on another planet.
You haven't got the high paying career that will also allow you to meet other high earners.
You don't have the family or culture or community that has these earners.
That's why people care so much which schools their kids go to, which areas they live in.
No point in earning £180k to live in a 2 bed terrace in a working class town.

Agree this poster is just nasty to you.
Bet she would not say that on a thread for women on benefits with 3 kids.
