To think if you want lots of flowers, you should be prepared to water them?

I love flowers in the garden, but realize they’re a lot of work, which I have neither the time or patience for. I don’t like watering and I’m not rowoaeed to give up 40mins every evening to do it.

There are some beautiful fake hanging baskets that look lovely without the need to ever water them!

Aibu to think that if you have lots of flowers in your garden, you should be the one to water them and not expect anyone else to do it?

What?

Hamster1111 · 08/07/2022 21:28

Jesus how big is your garden it would take 40 mins to water?!

Hillrunning · 08/07/2022 21:28

I'd expect any adults in the household to contribute to the upkeep of the garden. Flowers don't actually need that much watering, if anything I'd say theu need far less than crops, grass or shrubs.

carefullycourageous · 08/07/2022 21:29

Yabu to describe any fake flowers as 'beautiful' - nothing says 'I have no soul' like fake flowers/grass/leaves.

Chipsahoy · 08/07/2022 21:30

Huh? I have two acres. It doesn’t take me 40mins to water every night.. most don’t need it. Only pots and hanging baskets. Takes me five mins tops

Namechangeforthis88 · 08/07/2022 21:31

There are plenty of flowering plants that don't require watering. Nature is only watered by the rain and has plenty of flowers.

Mine does take half an hour, pretty small but loads of pots!

Sprig1 · 08/07/2022 21:34

Only if you have them in pots. Mine are in the ground. I don't water.

Raquelos · 08/07/2022 21:34

DP put in an irrigation system that waters our planter boxes twice a day. He did it 2 years ago and it still makes me feel ridiculously smug happy😁🌷🌻🌷🌻

If you think that fake flowers are the way forward then go for it.
Rest assured that any gardener will know that they're fake and within a month , everyone will know that they're fake.

I live in a close where a resident has fake hanging balls of plastic and fake blooms in their window box.
It looks awful, particularly as their grass and hedges have been left .

Go for it.

Loads of my in the ground plants must be dramatic as they wilt if I miss a watering.

Floraanddougal · 08/07/2022 21:37

I think I voted the wrong way, I’m not sure where you’re going with this but fake flowers in the garden are so utterly cringe and yes you need to water real ones.

Who? Who is this person that you don't think should be expected to water plants?

Meraas · 08/07/2022 21:39

Who is forcing you to water flowers?

CuriousCatfish · 08/07/2022 21:41

I find watering my pots quite relaxing. I like to see the plants perking up after a good watering.

TheodoreMortlock · 08/07/2022 21:42

I have no strong feelings on fake flowers. However I'm intrigued by what's prompted the OP. Imagining her in some sort of foliage-based hostage situation. Blink twice if you're being forced to do this at hose-point OP.

Great line!

I'm wondering if the op sells them. Otherwise this is quite an odd thread

onlythreenow · 08/07/2022 21:49

Flowers will still bloom whether you water or not. I'm assuming you live in the UK, surely you have plenty of damp weather and aren't in a constant drought? I agree, you must have a huge garden for it to take 40 minutes to water, and even if you do they don't require watering every evening. I'm not in the UK and we usually have restrictions so you aren't allowed to water every day - the plants still thrive. If you are talking about plants in pots, then yes they do need more watering.

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 08/07/2022 22:00

You like flowers but don’t want to water, then you just need to plant the right type of plants.

hypercium, spirea, buddleia, alliums, verbena botenarisis, hebes, crocomisia, roses, tulips, daffodils, Nigella, poppies, lupins - all so not need watering.

bedding plants, hydrangea, camellia, sunflowers, all need watering.

also check your soils type.

Same here neighbour has fake balls, plants, astro turf.....driveway untouched full of weeds, they are the kind who can do fuck all for themselves, cleaner, astro turf cleaner, prepared meals to the door and they hardly work so hardly don't have the time. Fake plants do NOTHING for the environment. Fake plants is everything that is wrong right now with our struggling eco system.

I was taught ( by head gardener I volunteered with at a stately home) that you water when you plant. Then you don't water again. If you water regularly the roots remain near the surface which makes the plant likely to fall over in the window means you have to keep watering. If you don't water, the plant will put roots deep into the ground in search of water. Plant survives very nicely and doesn't blow over in the wind. Works a treat.

HelloHeathcliffeItsMe · 08/07/2022 22:21

We have a 5 acre garden and don't water. We just choose plants that take care of themselves. We also have gardeners who do all the pruning, weeding, etc and mow when we are on holiday.

Do you think you shouldn't have long hair if you're not willing to cut it yourself? Or a car if you won't wash it yourself? Or nails if you won't paint them yourself? People outsource all sorts of things.

Warmorangesunset · 08/07/2022 22:29

Thanks all. Plants are in pots rather than in the ground and with no house, a jug has to be refilled from the kitchen table.
