Being oversensitive to my cat?

Lagertha6 · 07/07/2022 23:54

I have a cat who is 12 months and very much my baby. Not so much a lap cat but follows me everywhere, stares at my DP when he's sat in "her" seat on the couch and shouts at us when we come home from being out.

She's cost me a fortune in vet bills and now has to get three teeth out next week stemming from complications of caliche virus that she has. I have to bathe her eyes daily because of this and the breed that she is. So I worry about her alot.

Tonight my DP bought a lazer toy and was playing with her. When he switched it off she kept running round look for it and was on high alert for ages. I binned the last one because she would sit staring at the fridge for hours, no exaggeration. I couldn't bear to see her like that.

We've tried putting treats where the laser lies but she ignores it or can't see it. She can be bit of a dope at times.

Anyway I started crying because she was so wound up. My DP doesn't get it, thinks she is enjoying it. But I disagree.

Everyone says she's just a cat and think I go overboard with her. We don't have children so to me she is my baby.

Am I too obsessed with my cat? Should I bin the lazer again? Got it today. I said to DP only to use it as a distraction so she wouldn't stop crying at him to take her out on the lead (she doss bug him when he's in her seat.)

Sorry I know I sound like a weirdo.

I'm super emotional this week for variety of reasons Inc being told my job could be cut in the NHS.

The past 2 weeks she was stung by a bee and was sick for day/night emergency vet visit. Then follow up appt at her own vets turns out she needs 3 teeth removed due to her caliche virus.

Then we had rats in our garden and next door neighbour killed 13 so godknows how many under there.

My shower packed in. The guys who tore my shed down and trees (by rats nest) ripped my blinds when removing the rubbish through my house so had to pay new ones.

Was told about my job and my mum is in heart failure. I've not been sleeping.

SO IM KINDA ON THE EDGE AS IS.

Please go to a pharmacy and get yourself some sleeping pills. Not sleeping will make everything harder to deal with.
How long have you worked there?
Are you in a union?

AnnaMagnani · 08/07/2022 17:31

If you are in the NHS, are you in a union? And if not, join one! It's one of the most unionized workforces in the UK.

The NHS very rarely does redundancy as it costs too much, it is far far more likely to do redeployment or seek volunteers to go.

And thank-you for pointing me towards a whole new set of Jackson shows. He is a cat genius.

Lagertha6 · 08/07/2022 09:40

Omg he's beautiful. He's the spit of the ginger kitten we are trying to adopt! Even the ears!

Where did you find the behaviourist? X

We are in Australia and the behaviourist is Dr Nicole at Animal Sense. She has a website so worth checking out some of her case studies. Best money we have ever spent. We have Zoom consults.

Lagertha6 · 08/07/2022 20:52

Aw sad thing is I already take 100mg every night and have done for years but guess I'm at that stage now where my body is used to them.

Technically they aren't sleeping tablets but that's what my GP gives me them for along with my antidepressants.

I'm having an early night. Just come for a walk.

I've put my foot down with DP as he wanted to use the lazer tonight. I'm binning it when I get home x

OP posts:
Lagertha6 · 08/07/2022 20:55

I know everyone's said this about redeployment.

3 sections of the NHS are merging with us but after speaking with our bosses today our team will be OK. We are very niche and we are legally required by the government to be there. So I feel lots better.

I am going to join a union though. Our bosses didn't even know about anything of this until the woman who's always on the news held a big briefing. Just came from nowhere about the redundancies.

Dont be so wet Op!

you sound absolutely RIDICULOUS

Get a grip

IdiotCreatures · 08/07/2022 21:42

@Lagertha6 I too am on long term meds for sleeping issues. I vary between taking Amitriptyline 50 mgs to 75 mgs as well as swapping between Nytol and Phernaghan alongside.
I also have a script for Zopiclone which I take if I have had two or three bad nights in a row.
The thing to do to keep them working is chopping and changing every night, so that tolerance does not ruin the effect of them .
And try and get Zopiclone just for very occasional use, I get 10 3.75 mgs prescribed once every six to nine months probably, GP's don't like prescribing those kind of meds but some of us do need them.
Good news about the job!!!

I know it is bit like that with her at times. We take her out roughly 3 - 5 times a day for walk on lead in garden. She throws a strop an we do it.

Any advice of how to get back in charge? She's my 1st cat was always wanting a dog when moved out but ended up with her. Total cat convert now x

I don't know if you read my fairly detailed post (page 2 i think), I am an animal behaviour consultant (feel free to pm me if you want my credentials) and whilst I deal more with dogs, basic cat stuff like this is not dissimilar.

Do not concern yourself with whether your cat is 'in charge' - thats a very outdated idea that animals wish to dominate us and take charge and control our lives and the recommendations for addressing this fictitious problem are unpleasant and potentially going to cause harm to your cat!

Please, as I said in my previous post, ditch the laser, it is not good for your cat.

Ahh, I think we work for the same organisation. Shit isn't it and such a shock.

Anyway, you're a total loon, but I get it completely and don't even bother trying to gain control of your life. Your cat is your overlord. Embrace it.

From an equally loony dog owner.

VestaTilley · 08/07/2022 23:23

You are all absolutely insane.

I have two DCats. I adore them. But this thread is something else 😂

MyBrilliantFriend · 09/07/2022 04:49

Aw OP this was me 11 years ago. Our cat was everything. The first time we went away & my parents looked after her I sent her off with 10 pages of instructions. Then we had DC and the first time my parents looked after them they got 1 side of A4 😂. And the cat, whilst still an incredibly loved & pampered member of our family, is not my sole obsession anymore.

Lagertha6 · 09/07/2022 12:49

Thanks so much. Will read your first message again

I have binned the lazer. Did it last night when DP went to work. If he asks for it later when he gets up I'm going to be honest and tell him I've binned it.

Hahaha love it!

Yer sounds like. 4.30 pm address? Mad isn't it just totally out the blue about redundancies. We've got two new starters on Monday too on permanent contracts.

@thenewduchessoflapland
When she wants feeding she'll go into the cupboard and pick up a sachet of cat food in her mouth and bring it to you.

That is just adorable……and I’m not even a cat lover.

that is cute - mine does the same (my tabby/oriental cross) but he takes five sachets and rips them open all over the floor - he's a tit - yesterday I had a party and he ran up the garden with half a block of red Leicester in his mouth

I have 5 (was 6 until 6 weeks ago sadly) but they are all outdoor cats - one got seriously addicted to the laser - used to sit next to me staring me out until I clicked it - we got rid and now they all have a nice healthy catnip addiction!

Mountainmoose · 09/07/2022 12:59

When my cats get too wired or overstimulated after game times, I cuddle them and play special cat sleep music which you can find on YouTube or Spotify. It really seems to work in calming them down and has the bonus of making me feel all calm and tranquil too

Lagertha6 · 09/07/2022 13:03

Hi I've just reread the your message. Thanks very much for your tips. She's very much a run and play type. I'm going to look at the Nina toys this evening.

Yabu and attributing human emotions to a cat. She sounds well loved and looked after, that's all they need . Cats are independent creatures.
