Being oversensitive to my cat?

I have a cat who is 12 months and very much my baby. Not so much a lap cat but follows me everywhere, stares at my DP when he's sat in "her" seat on the couch and shouts at us when we come home from being out.

She's cost me a fortune in vet bills and now has to get three teeth out next week stemming from complications of caliche virus that she has. I have to bathe her eyes daily because of this and the breed that she is. So I worry about her alot.

Tonight my DP bought a lazer toy and was playing with her. When he switched it off she kept running round look for it and was on high alert for ages. I binned the last one because she would sit staring at the fridge for hours, no exaggeration. I couldn't bear to see her like that.

We've tried putting treats where the laser lies but she ignores it or can't see it. She can be bit of a dope at times.

Anyway I started crying because she was so wound up. My DP doesn't get it, thinks she is enjoying it. But I disagree.

Everyone says she's just a cat and think I go overboard with her. We don't have children so to me she is my baby.

Am I too obsessed with my cat? Should I bin the lazer again? Got it today. I said to DP only to use it as a distraction so she wouldn't stop crying at him to take her out on the lead (she doss bug him when he's in her seat.)

Sorry I know I sound like a weirdo.

Your DP needs to understand the pecking order (in all fairness he seems to be nearly there). Everything is totally about what's right for your cat in your eyes.

Aw thank you so much. Yes I really am. My parents are too to be honest. Before I got her I'd spent years battling depression and suicidal feelings for 20 years +

My DP is besotted too. Blows kisses to her xxxx

I got her and she's given me purpose and so much joy. She's honestly made my life. I still do have those now and again (my mums in heart failure) but my cat has just made me laugh so much.

Sounds very familiar ha! Like loads.

No I don't think so. The breeder said 16 weeks, we have her papers and vac records and DOB.

However her health took nose dive within 5 days so I had her the vets who said she had mites in her ears and did tests as her breathing was laboured/heavily gunky eyes/sneezing green stuff up my walls she had to have antibiotics via needle and then tablets when home. Test came back as caliche.

Turns out breeder was farming. So glad we got her otherwise I don't know where she would have ended up. Probs as breeding machine. X

When we turn the laser off we then use the stick toy briefly to let her catch that.

Lagertha6 · 08/07/2022 08:51

Yes I have. We are in process of adopting a ginger tomcat kitten but because he's so small and not vaxed yet we might not be able too as my cat has caliche virus. I actually can't spell that word.

So the rescue are waiting on advice from the vet. We may have to wait until he's had 1st vaccine or have to get another kitten.

Thing is he's the image of my DP, the kitten has long fluffy coat and he little wolf ears. Plus he has an extra digit on each poor.

No word of a lie my big brother was born with 4 thumbs. All had nails and worked. He had them amputated when he was about 3. Our nan used to make him wear gloves even in Summer as she was embarrassed. Poor bro. He's 14 years older than me so I wasn't around to stick up for him.

So anyqay defo think this kitten is for us but will have to see.

You sound bananas but I can't talk, my youngest cat has just had £2.5k surgery and is having to be isolated while he recovers and I'm mostly isolating with him. Husband has been moved to the spare room so he can keep the other cats company!

IdiotCreatures · 08/07/2022 09:23

Our cat (his bday yesterday he was one and we have him steak, he loved it) has already cost us a grand in vet bills. He got a little scratch but then he worried it a lot until it became a horrific head wound, we made six visits to three different vets but he is recovered totally now but it was really worrying and stressful at the time.

Anyhow something I came up with to keep him entertained (even though he goes outdoors) is a treat box. It's a small cardboard box which we fill with balls of paper until you can't see the bottom. We then get dreamies and drop them among the balls and give the box a good shake. DCat loves finding them!

supertedlasso · 08/07/2022 09:26

Has she been spayed BTW?

Flossyhair · 08/07/2022 09:27

I totally hear you.
My cat Kev is on Prozac and Lyrica for his aggression and behaviour and he is under a veterinary behaviourist.
He costs me a fortune but we love him so much - all 9.3kgs of him.

Mellowyellow222 · 08/07/2022 09:27

I totally relate to this. My cat has a bedtime and she gets annoyed if I stay up lateZ

u went on holiday a few weeks ago and she went to my parents. She actually bullied them into going to bed at 10pm😂. Because she sleeps on their bed but doesn’t like to sleep alone!

cats truly are the masters - and it is very easy to let them take the upper hand.

Lagertha6 · 08/07/2022 09:36

Aw sounds awful. Glad they're on mend though. Great idea x

It is not possible to be too obsessed with a cat 😉

Lagertha6 · 08/07/2022 09:39

Yes, she has. DP suggested breeding her when we first got her when she's old enough.

I politely said no chance, nada, nope. No thank you. I booked the neutering when she was old enough.

Omg he's beautiful. He's the spit of the ginger kitten we are trying to adopt! Even the ears!

Where did you find the behaviourist? X
