Real situation....in a coffee shop now.

On the fence about this.

Very artisanal place, fresh cakes etc. menu says 'fresh orange juice'

What would you expect to be served?

Not from concentrate, so from a carton or bottle with a short life that needs to be kept in fridge. Innocent or Tropicana or the like.

dudsville · 07/07/2022 11:54

I too have been caught out with "fresh orange juice" not being pressed on site. I find OJ so often disapointing so I always ask where it's from now.

MiniPiccolo · 07/07/2022 11:54

dementedpixie · 07/07/2022 10:57

Are you calling the people of Scotland sociopaths?

Most cold drinks here are 'juice' except milk and water. You get fizzy juice (cola, irn bru, lemonade, etc), diluting juice (squash), fresh juice, etc

You mean they're not?? 😂

LookItsMeAgain · 07/07/2022 11:56

Send it back and raise your concerns. As someone upthread posted
Fresh orange juice = Freshly squeezed
Pure orange juice = From a carton

What you got was clearly from a carton and shouldn't be sold as "Fresh" orange juice. It was fresh when it was squeezed from the oranges some weeks/months ago, before it got packaged up.

I would even consider fresh OJ as something like the bottles you might see in a supermarket like this:
www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-freshly-squeezed-orange-juice-with-bits--taste-the-difference-1l
being sold as 'fresh OJ' in a cafe.

It's not long life OJ.

Please complain and get your money back. If you don't, they'll keep selling OJ this way and others will be duped into thinking it's freshly squeezed in the kitchens but it is far from that.

Where about in the country are you? Where I’m from fresh orange juice just means ‘not squash’.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 07/07/2022 12:03

What do you all think when it just says 'orange juice' on the menu? Is it acceptable then to just be that manky shit from a carton?

(I'm being sarky for the benefit of those that think carton juice is 'disgusting')

BudgetTarzan · 07/07/2022 12:09

So that's "fresh" in the same way our work canteen puts the word "tasty" in front of the craggy shite they serve in the hope it seems more appetising.

saraclara · 07/07/2022 12:09

'Fresh orange juice' as a descriptor dates back to the days when real orange juice was coming into pubs and needed differentiating from orange squash.

It was a slow process, and many a time I'd ask for orange juice and get squash! But usually if you asked for orange juice in that transition period, the bar staff would ask if you wanted 'fresh' orange juice. Which would usually mean a bottle of Britvic.

Even now there are many people who refer to orange squash as 'juice' so it seems the 'fresh' bit, though innaccurate, is still needed.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 07/07/2022 12:11

If it says fresh orange juice, I would expect something from a carton or bottle.

Freshly squeezed orange juice, i would expect to be made on site.

I'd expect not from concentrate unless labelled as from concentrate on the menu.

Haha, yes pretty much!!

I don't want to be too scathing of the place as the food is yummy and staff are quite attentive. I just got caught out!!

I'm in the south east for those asking (not London)

Those of you not wanting it pasteurised are getting ripped off. You must have money to burn if you're happy with it only just coming up level with your boobs.

JocelynBurnell · 07/07/2022 12:23

£2.80 for a 1/2 pint glass of orange juice would be fairly standard in the SE.

While I agree that 'fresh' is misleading, I would only expect freshly-squeezed if stated and even then it is likely to be 'freshly-squeezed' from a bottle.

VioletInsolence · 07/07/2022 12:28

Just wanted to make people aware that there are now two types of ‘not from concentrate’ and the cheaper one has been processed in some way (can’t remember the details!) to increase shelf life and reduce cost. However, it is still technically not from concentrate! You’ll see in Aldi that the proper ‘not from concentrate’ is almost £2 a bottle whereas the other one is under £1.

I only know this because my son saw it on YouTube and I’m a packaging/marketing nerd (bore)🙂

TinaDina · 07/07/2022 12:29

I was very thrown the first time I moved to Scotland and asked for orange juice a few times, only to be given orange squash. I soon learned that 'squash' is called 'diluting juice' up here. So, if somewhere had 'fresh orange juice' I'd assume that was to show it was actual juice, rather than squash, and wouldn't expect it to be freshly squeezed or anything.

Then again, I'm autistic and hate 'bits' in my juice so I wouldn't want freshly squeezed juice, anyway.

Buythebag40 · 07/07/2022 12:33

A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice is about £3.50+ round here, and would also state "freshly squeezed" on the menu - when you think how many actual oranges it takes to get a glass of juice (about 3-4) I wouldn't expect freshly squeezed for £2-odd as they wouldn't be making any profit on it.

Remember cafes have all their overheads/staff to pay.

In Scotland, everything is Juice.

Fruit Juice, Fizzy Juice and Juice.

You'd love it there. My English DH hates asking my parents for a drink and always just asks for Water! (Which I now call Tap Juice just to wind him up!)

Tap water is Council Juice! You also forgot diluting juice, a.k.a squash Grin

When I was 18, I went to London with a friend and asked a guy in a cafe for a "can of juice" with my food, expecting Coke or Fanta. He looked totally baffled but I was equally baffled because I didn't understand what was unclear about my request Grin

BungleandGeorge · 07/07/2022 12:37

I’d expect the same as when you buy it from the supermarket- not pasteurised long life, from the chiller cabinet but still made from concentrate

RollingRandomlyRound · 07/07/2022 12:38

Rosiestraws · 07/07/2022 10:26

orange juice not from concentrate, but possibly still from carton..

This

Oceanus · 07/07/2022 12:40

Depends on which country I am. In Europe I would expect them to get the oranges out and squeeze them on the spot. In Panama, I would expect them to get a bottle out and serve me pasteurised "freshly squeezed orange juice" that tastes like crap.

scissorsandsellotape · 07/07/2022 12:50

What are home made baked beans?

Oceanus · 07/07/2022 12:56

Home made baked beans
If I go to the supermarket right now, I'll probably be able to find a can or a jar with (tastes like) home made baked beans on the label...

Rosehugger · 07/07/2022 13:19

At least Tropicana type. Not the long life type made from concentrate.

LillyDeValley · 07/07/2022 13:19

I'm in the SE for £2.80 probably a child's size glass of organic juice from a carton.

SerendipityJane · 07/07/2022 13:21

Presumably it was freshly unscrewed ?
