Real situation....in a coffee shop now.

On the fence about this.

Very artisanal place, fresh cakes etc. menu says 'fresh orange juice'

What would you expect to be served?

Oh this is the sort of thing that irritates me - it usually arrives as 'not from concentrate' but this hardly ever means 'fresh'

Marmite27 · 07/07/2022 10:28

Tropicana, McDonalds serve Tropicana.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2022 10:28

In an artisanal coffee shop I'd expect freshly squeezed orange juice.

If it was a pub then it might be from a carton or even bottled britvic...

MiniPiccolo · 07/07/2022 10:30

Fresh Orange = Tropicana
Fresh Squeezed Orange = as per the name.

Fresh Orange isn't the same as Fresh Squeezed. Fresh Orange is called 'Fresh' to distinguish it from 'Concentrated Orange Juice' and 'Orange Squash'.

TheNoodlesIncident · 07/07/2022 10:31

For that price I'd expect Not From Concentrate orange juice. I wouldn't expect freshly squeezed from actual oranges because that's more, around 4-5 Euro in Greece.

We have a hand juicer at home and there's quite a lot of effort and pother involved, we don't use it as much as I'd hoped before purchase...

NiqueNique · 07/07/2022 10:31

Although tbf if I wanted freshly squeezed orange juice I’d expect to pay more Koke £4 - 5 for a glass.

NiqueNique · 07/07/2022 10:32

Koke?? FFS this blasted autocorrect/predictive text is more bother than it’s worth! *like, obviously.

PegasusReturns · 07/07/2022 10:32

For that price I would expect freshly squeezed on premises but I would expect it to be not made from concentrate

PeekAtYou · 07/07/2022 10:33

A bottle of orange juice that was freshly squeezed elsewhere and delivered to the cafe.

WimpoleHat · 07/07/2022 10:34

Standard orange juice out of a bottle, probably - you only get freshly squeezed if that’s explicitly said (and not for £2.80)!

SnowyLamb · 07/07/2022 10:37

Tropicana

You're right what they've actually said is freshly squeezed oranges, but that's not what your going to get anywhere for that price.

I would expect a "nice" not from concentrate OJ though.

DiamanteDelia · 07/07/2022 10:37

Ideally orange juice from an orange. More likely squeezed and bottled.

I wouldn't be happy with the long life stuff from concentrate.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 07/07/2022 10:38

Hate threads like this.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2022 10:38

Did you get orange squash?

Comefromaway · 07/07/2022 10:41

Fresh orange juice = Freshly squeezed
Pure orange juice = From a carton

BiscoffSundae · 07/07/2022 10:43

Was it Tropicana in one of those little bottles?

PuckeredArseFace · 07/07/2022 10:43

thank you for your valuable contribution 🤣
Freshly squeezed

SlashBeef · 07/07/2022 10:43

Literally fresh from the orange

SirenSays · 07/07/2022 10:44

I always expect it from a carton so it's a nice surprise when it's fresh.

floweringpoppies · 07/07/2022 10:44

I'd hope for a glass from one of those machines where you see the oranges go round and they get squished!

ShirleyPhallus · 07/07/2022 10:44

Marmite27 · 07/07/2022 10:27

The type that comes out of a carton, or the bottles at McDonald’s (can’t remember the brand).

IMO ‘fresh’ orange juice is used to differentiate it from orange squash/cordial which is also known as juice in some parts.

Unless it said ‘freshly squeezed’ orange juice, I wouldn’t expect that.

People that call squash “juice” are actual sociopaths honestly

EvergreenForest · 07/07/2022 10:47

Comefromaway · 07/07/2022 10:41

Fresh orange juice = Freshly squeezed
Pure orange juice = From a carton

Thanks for your comments all. Just to clarify, I haven't kicked up a fuss but I did ask the staff where it was from

They said it's from a carton but pasteurised not from concentrate

It's a fairly decent sized glass but no bits.

To be honest it tastes disgusting so I've paid but won't be drinking it.

I think you're right that freshly squeezed would cost more but I was thrown by the word 'fresh' and the fact that it's a high end coffee shop with avo on toast and homemade baked beans so I wrongly assumed it would be squeezed

It seems most of you wouldn't have been caught out by this!

I think along the same lines as above poster. 'Pure' means not concentrate and from a carton and 'fresh' means squeezed on site. But it seems I'm wrong!!

To be fair, I would expect any product I buy in a cafe to be fresh, even if I'm just in the Morrisons cafe! They've just used the word to be pretentious and wanky. Fresh orange juice is not the same thing as freshly squeezed orange juice. I would expect that to be a bit more expensive.

Dotjones · 07/07/2022 10:48

I'd expect a bottle of Tropicana or similar. "Fresh" is as in "fresh from the bottle".

Augend23 · 07/07/2022 10:48

I would expect not from concentrate juice. I'd wish for freshly squeezed.
