Real situation....in a coffee shop now.

On the fence about this.

Very artisanal place, fresh cakes etc. menu says 'fresh orange juice'

What would you expect to be served?

People that call squash “juice” are actual sociopaths honestly

That'll be pretty much the whole of Scotland then...

For that price, I would expect something like Tropicana or similar, poured from a bottle (but not an individual bottle), I'm guessing you got one of those little cartons that comes with a straw

Thanks for your comments all. Just to clarify, I haven't kicked up a fuss but I did ask the staff where it was from

They said it's from a carton but pasteurised not from concentrate

It's a fairly decent sized glass but no bits.

To be honest it tastes disgusting so I've paid but won't be drinking it.

I think you're right that freshly squeezed would cost more but I was thrown by the word 'fresh' and the fact that it's a high end coffee shop with avo on toast and homemade baked beans so I wrongly assumed it would be squeezed

It seems most of you wouldn't have been caught out by this!

I think along the same lines as above poster. 'Pure' means not concentrate and from a carton and 'fresh' means squeezed on site. But it seems I'm wrong!!

If it tastes disgusting then send it back? It’s probably been open too long and has gone offn

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 07/07/2022 10:49

I'd expect chilled (not pasteurised) not from concentrate orange juice. The only place I've ever been that actually squeezes its own juice is one of those smoothie bar places.

haggan · 07/07/2022 10:50

Is that a white ring around the top of the juice inside the glass? Trying to work out if it's a fizz/froth or a trick of the light.

If it is a white ring it is probably off, hence the bad taste.

SleepSleepRaveAsleep · 07/07/2022 10:51

I would expect fresh orange juice poured from a carton,I wouldn't expect someone to stand there pressing oranges. It'd say "freshly squeezed orange juice" if it was pressed oranges. If I was really particular I'd clarify what it was.

speakout · 07/07/2022 10:52

I would expect juice from a carton for £2.80.

"fresh Orange" distinguishes it from orange squash in my book.

BeenHereForYonkyDoodles · 07/07/2022 10:52

Please send it back. Its probably off.
Don't pay for that!

motogirl · 07/07/2022 10:52

Fresh at that price? The refrigerated juice eg Tropicana. Would expect to pay at least a pound more for squeeze to order

QuestionableMouse · 07/07/2022 10:52

Marmite27 · 07/07/2022 10:27

The type that comes out of a carton, or the bottles at McDonald’s (can’t remember the brand).

IMO ‘fresh’ orange juice is used to differentiate it from orange squash/cordial which is also known as juice in some parts.

Unless it said ‘freshly squeezed’ orange juice, I wouldn’t expect that.

Tropicana

Sparklingbrook · 07/07/2022 10:53

I would also expect Tropicana style.Unless it specifically stated 'freshly squeezed' and I'd expect them to be making it from oranges.
Send it back if it doesn't taste right though.

RincewindsHat · 07/07/2022 10:54

Fresh should mean freshly squeezed from actual fruit, but like others have said, I always check because some places seem to think fresh juice means freshly poured from a mass produced carton.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 07/07/2022 10:55

Looks a weird colour!

Ducksurprise · 07/07/2022 10:55

My Lidl has just put in a orange squeezer, juicer thing. Misses point I was just surprised

mam0918 · 07/07/2022 10:55

Im not a big orange juice fan but have had fresh orange juice once on holiday.

It was gritty, lumpy and grizley... not that nice to be honest.

Fairislefandango · 07/07/2022 10:57

I wouldn't expect freshly squeezed unless it said freshly squeezed. Fresh orange juice generally just means actual juice rather than squash/sweetened 'juice drink' imo. The price related to how much it would cost to buy in a supermarket and serve it yourself is no guide. If it were, a cup of tea in a café would cost a few pence!

Are you calling the people of Scotland sociopaths?

Most cold drinks here are 'juice' except milk and water. You get fizzy juice (cola, irn bru, lemonade, etc), diluting juice (squash), fresh juice, etc

Another Scot here- yes juice can mean many things- "can you get me some juice"
I may ask my OH- "I'll have a lemonade" is reasonable to us.

Juice is pretty much all soft drinks here- from juice squeezed freshly, carton fresh orange, cordials, squash, carbonated - we call them all juice.

Coke is a type of juice too!

mrsm43s · 07/07/2022 10:57

For £2.80, I'd expect (cheap) juice from a carton.
If it was priced at the £5-7 mark, I'd probably have hoped for freshly squeezed, but wouldn't have that surprised if it was just high end juice from a carton.

phishy · 07/07/2022 10:57

I would have asked if it was freshly squeezed.

But they are being a bit misleading.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 07/07/2022 10:58

SeemsSoUnfair · 07/07/2022 10:25

"Fresh" orange (preferably not from concentrate, but dont count on it!) out a bottle/carton.

Would like freshly squeezed orange, but you wouldnt get that for £2.80!

I agree.

Waterfool · 07/07/2022 10:59

They probably feel the price is justified by the size of the glass. But who needs that much juice?! Smaller portion and better quality OR cheaper would be preferable

In Scotland, everything is Juice.

Fruit Juice, Fizzy Juice and Juice.

You'd love it there. My English DH hates asking my parents for a drink and always just asks for Water! (Which I now call Tap Juice just to wind him up!)

jalapenita · 07/07/2022 11:00

Probably expect Tropicana from my experience Grinalthough for thst price it should be freshly squeezed

Caspianberg · 07/07/2022 11:00

I really hate this. Stops me buying orange juice out and about unless I know exactly what it is. I find cheaper orange juice awful, but cheaper apple juice is more drinkable. If in doubt, pick apple.
