Cf hobby teacher

I attend a hobby class every Thursday morning 10am to 12. The group is run by a very nice lady and we have all become friends. It's 5 pounds to attend each week which covers tea/coffee, rental of the hall and you can purchase supplies of the teacher. Now the teacher is a on call TA at a preschool and as she gets paid more for this job occasionally we turn up and there's no one to run the class. Lately this has been happening more which is disappointing. Last week I received a text message from the teacher asking if I could set up the class, call around to her house pick up supplies, make tea/ coffees, tidy up and return supplies to her house while she was at work. I agreed as I enjoy the class. The next week the teacher came and asked if I had collected the fee which I had not. She then asked everyone to pay double for last week and this week including me. I was abit annoyed as it would have been good manners to not charge me as I actually ran the class. So my aibu question is it ok to agree to run a class not turn up when you have a better offer and expect people to pay

You say, "if I'm doing all the work I'm not paying".
Or "Im out of pocket if I set it up & then pay on top."
If she asks everyone in turn, then they dont pay that day

Yes she does have to pay for the hall but she is doing it to make money as it's her business. I think next term I will speck up with all of your advice.

Wow, what a wheeze she has going on! Charge people to turn up to her class, then charge them to teach it for her!

If there's supposed to be a teaching element and you're using your own supplies, id expect the others to pay a lower rate just to cover the room hire, and you not pay anything.

I'm sure if she'd said it's £3 for last week most people would have paid the usual fiver. Or asked for a fiver and given you a tenner as thanks.

But she's so cheeky asking you to pay after all your hard work!

I’d wonder if after the hall and the supplies the profit is minimal. Check the price of the hall. Did she provide the biscuits etc ? Just don’t offer again - and if she asks you just say I’m busy before and after the class etc

Is this something like knitting or crochet where it started as a class but has become basically a knit and natter session? It doesn't sound like a lot of teaching goes on if any of you can take over the class at a moment's notice.

If so, I'd suggest that - especially given the increase in this lady's TA work - you put forward the idea of changing the set-up so that all you are doing is paying for the cost of the hall, maybe with a rota for bringing tea and coffee, and if people buy supplies off this lady that's a separate transaction.
