To cancel a date due to heatwave?

First date with someone on Friday in London. Just seen that it's 28C even towards the evening. I don't cope well in the heat and at its worst it makes me feel quite unwell. AIBU to cancel?

If someone cancelled me for that reason then I wouldn't think we would have much chance of a future so probably wouldn't bother rearranging the date to be honest.

linenalltheway · 06/07/2022 17:38

Find somewhere with aircon eg a hotel lobby bar, check in advance

savebuckbeak · 06/07/2022 17:38

@KillerQueenGunpowderGelatine Thank you! Yeah, I probably didn't fully convey in my posts that I'm not just being a bit dramatic - I do have a health condition which makes my heat tolerance v v low. I think I'll still go but trying to find out if the bar we have booked has air con. I assume it does.

@LoobyDop Really? You'd write someone off completely, even if you got along super well and there was chemistry and attraction, due to weather preferences?

Yes. It would mean that everytime it was a beautiful summer evening and it would be nice to go out you would not want to go. 28 is not massively hot.

Crackercrazy · 06/07/2022 19:41

FGS, for some people it is too hot.

savebuckbeak · 06/07/2022 20:00

@Crackercrazy Yeah, I think some pp genuinely have no idea how some underlying health conditions, particularly autoimmune issues, can make people very intolerant to heat.

OP posts:
Mariposa80 · 06/07/2022 20:03

My autoimmune conditions make me intolerant to the cold, hence why i say there would be a basic compatibility issue. It's not a value judgment.

balalake · 06/07/2022 20:09

If you are going to do so, do it now, don't wait until Friday.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/07/2022 20:34

savebuckbeak · 06/07/2022 17:14

@BatshitCrazyWoman Ah! The Beeb is saying 28.

Met Office is more accurate, usually!

icelolly12 · 06/07/2022 21:12

Oh for goodness sake what a pathetic excuse

Justcallmebebes · 06/07/2022 21:32

I get it a bit more now you say you have a medical condition but I'm afraid I'd bin someone off for not liking the heat. It would make us incompatible, for holidays for a start

CaptainCorellisXylophone · 06/07/2022 22:26

IGotItInTheSales · 06/07/2022 16:51

It's not a heatwave.... it's just summer weather

I need this on a t-shirt

This!
Would also make going away on holiday very difficult.

Going on holiday doesn't mean going somewhere it's hot!

If he cancelled a date with me because it was hot, I'd assume we didn't have the chemistry and attraction that I'd thought we had. Not hard to book somewhere with air con.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/07/2022 07:00

check whether there is air conditioning
and surely it will have cooled down a bit during the evening?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/07/2022 07:01

however it is going to be hotter all next week so how can you rebook?

can you suggest a specific air conditioned restaurent/event?

rainbowandglitter · 07/07/2022 07:09

I think you should let him know. I'd be incompatible with someone who couldn't handle heat (for whatever reason). I'm a sun worshipper and live for hot sunny holidays so this just wouldn't work for me at all.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2022 07:09

I would. I hate being over heated.

RampantIvy · 07/07/2022 07:11

Jealous. We have a forecast of 22 degrees. Although, I'll settle for that over the cloudy, windy days we've been having recently.

YesitsJacqueline · 07/07/2022 07:14

Haha mumsnet and their " heatwaves"

Applegreenb · 07/07/2022 07:43

I hate the heat anything over 24c and I’m too hot and sweaty. So I don’t think your being unreasonable.

However the general population doesn’t agree with us. And it would be seen as a strange excuse. 100% check out if the restaurant has air con, if it doesn’t and your really going to struggle, I wouldn’t cancel but move it. So still showing you want to meet but just can’t tomorrow.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/07/2022 07:53

Yes, I'd think you were flackey and not bither again. Just arrange to meet somewhere with air con.

gannett · 07/07/2022 08:13

savebuckbeak · 06/07/2022 16:18

I'll suck it up probably! Should have said I also have a medical condition which makes me v sensitive to heat. I usually just sit around with my mini fan and an ice pack but can't really do that on a date...

I would tell your date you have a medical condition and just take your mini fan and ice pack. I don't think it'd come across as particularly odd.

MintJulia · 07/07/2022 08:16

28 degrees is hardly a heatwave.

Thin cotton dress, sandals, sun screen, a hat if you are fair and a bottle of water.

And set out early so you can amble rather than rush.

Have a lovely time 🙂
