Strange comment from delivery guy

We ordered pizza last night from a takeaway place we don't use very often because it was quite late and this was one of the few places still open.

Boyfriend answered the door to get the pizza and was there talking to him longer than you would expect. When he came back he told me that the delivery guy had asked whether our car (parked on the drive) was for sale. Boyfriend said it wasn't his car so couldn't say and the delivery guy said 'if it is then call the number on the takeaway leaflet'. He then gave Boyfriend another leaflet for the takeaway place, plus one for a takeaway under a different name that we have seen before (they're clearly run by same people) and leaflets for other businesses like blinds and flooring, with the same business name as the takeaway.

Boyfriend said its maybe because the car was parked a little bit on the grass rather than fully on the drive and so it looked like it was for sale. Even so, AIBU to think this was really strange and unprofessional from the delivery guy? Also AIBU to not order from them again as it seems they have lots of different businesses going on, meaning pizza isn't going to be their speciality (the pizza we got wasn't great) and it also seems dodgy to me?

Are you from the south of England?

Fennellathewitch · 06/07/2022 19:55

Yeah Northern here wouldn't have raised an eyebrow at that conversation...

I don't think its unreasonable to prefer that the place you order pizza from just focuses mainly on pizza rather than juggling too many things and therefore letting the quality of the pizza suffer.
I also think you can find pizza takeaways that specialise in good pizza, its not that much of an unreasonable expectation.

My boyfriend said the exchange did feel awkward and he just wanted the guy to give him the pizza instead of questioning him about the car. I just think its weird.

How do the two thing corralate in your mind? you do know parent companies aren't 'mom and pop' operations, they hire employees to work each indervidual business.

The owner of the pizza places isnt unblocking your toilet with one hand, changing the oil on your car with the other while tossing your pizza with his cock... he just owns the place and hires a chef.

If you've got the equipment and the drivers to get the food out hot, there's not a lot of 'focus' needed to making decent pizza. DD learned it in week when she was 17. If the pizza wasn't good, it won't be because they were distracted by their other businesses.
Its also not a business that requires all day 'focus'. Get the dough ready in the morning then you're generally done till tea time when the orders start coming in. A hard working person could fit in other jobs in between, and probably needs to given how tough it is for small businesses at the moment.

I had a quite unusual small hatchback a few years ago - nothing at all special and worth about £5k, but something you didn't see many of on the roads. The guy in the local petrol station asked me to sell him it every time I called in, sometimes with specific (and realistic) offers. Unfortunately, when I did want to sell and called in, he'd left about two weeks before!

I wouldn't think anything of this at all. Most likely the guy has identified your make and model as what he wants next and was just asking; or he's moonlighting as a car dealer and says this to everyone.

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 06/07/2022 20:07

Isn't it just that the delivery guy has two delivery jobs? He gave you a leaflet from each to get in touch with him. I doubt he owns the pizzeria. Also the quality, authentic pizzerias aren't open at letting out time, the places that are open late are the places whose customers are shitfaced not looking for authentic Italian cuisine. They most likely sell burgers, fish and chips, kebab, fried chicken and hot dogs too. Order at a more civilised time if you want a top notch pizza served in an authentic cardboard box.

tossing your pizza with his cock

I’d pay to see that 😆

pawpatrol1 · 06/07/2022 20:14

This is regular in my area. Anytime there is a banger looking car companies put flyers on them to ask if they want to be sold.

Don't be offended. Just say no

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/07/2022 20:38

Maybe their pizza isn't very good because they're not very good at pizza.

Maybe you/your boyfriend felt awkward because you are unfriendly, anti-social people.

Don't order from them again if it's that big a deal!

PinkStarAtNight · 06/07/2022 22:42

Boyfriend said that the delivery guy told him he was the main guy - the pizza place and the other businesses are named after him, (think something like 'Joe's pizza' and 'Joe's Blinds') - and the guy who delivered introduced himself as Joe and said next time you order don't go through Just Eat, order directly and pay cash as its cheaper for him and us apparently.

So @mam0918 I think he actually is 'unblocking your toilet with one hand, changing the oil on your car with the other while tossing your pizza with his cock' !

no one can physically cook pizza, while delivering it, while hanging blinds, while scrapping cars etc...

Even if the boss stepped in to help because the delivery boy didnt show up that still couldnt possibly mean he is doing everything... no one has 20 arms and can be in multiple places at once.

Rosehugger · 07/07/2022 10:04

I would keep an eye on cars and make sure they have the best security available. Whenever we've had people come round asking whether cars are for sale a couple get stolen not long after.

Bubblebubblebah · 07/07/2022 10:19

Bosses do often step in for staff who can't/doesn't turn up on the day... It's not that weird. Including delivery. The piza place is busy well after other day time businesses close.
I know quite a few people who work 14 hour days in 2+ businesses bringing them up to where they can take step back or aiming for early retirement. Or just being plain old workaholics tbh....

Bubblebubblebah · 07/07/2022 10:20

And fuck yeah about justeat (and deliveroo and uber) and their cut. I think it's currently usually 30% hence why it's more expensive on the apps than ordering direct

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/07/2022 22:25

Yeah, if you're thinking the comment about ordering direct rather than via justeat is 'dodgy' - no, he's spot on.

They all have to offer it or they'll lose business, but it costs them, and it costs you, for the sake of NOT having to talk to someone on the phone... does seem daft.

Our local kebab shop is owned by a builder - not that he'd ever do deliveries but he does work in the shop a lot. He would absolutely try to sell you a new porch or extension whilst selling you a kebab though - its what he does, he sells the things he does.

If we all just did one job, wouldn't the world be boring.
