Strange comment from delivery guy

PinkStarAtNight · 06/07/2022 12:49

We ordered pizza last night from a takeaway place we don't use very often because it was quite late and this was one of the few places still open.

Boyfriend answered the door to get the pizza and was there talking to him longer than you would expect. When he came back he told me that the delivery guy had asked whether our car (parked on the drive) was for sale. Boyfriend said it wasn't his car so couldn't say and the delivery guy said 'if it is then call the number on the takeaway leaflet'. He then gave Boyfriend another leaflet for the takeaway place, plus one for a takeaway under a different name that we have seen before (they're clearly run by same people) and leaflets for other businesses like blinds and flooring, with the same business name as the takeaway.

Boyfriend said its maybe because the car was parked a little bit on the grass rather than fully on the drive and so it looked like it was for sale. Even so, AIBU to think this was really strange and unprofessional from the delivery guy? Also AIBU to not order from them again as it seems they have lots of different businesses going on, meaning pizza isn't going to be their speciality (the pizza we got wasn't great) and it also seems dodgy to me?

It's a very old car. Still looks OK - clean, no scratches etc - but its not modern at all and quite small. I can't see why someone would want to buy it, apart from to sell it for parts, or if they were desperate for a car and couldn't afford to spend much and assumed it would be cheap as its old. I also can't work out what made him think it might be for sale. I found it insulting some how.

Anyway, judging by the comments I'm clearly being weird about this so I'll let it go!

Seriously OP can you not see how ridiculous you're being? you have just written the very reasons why someone might be interested in your car -it's old but is clean and small..might be a bargain if it's on sale and someone is desperate for a car like that. What's not to like? this is exactly the sort of thing my DS who has just got his license might like to buy.

What made him think it might be for sale? well it's VERY old for starters and was inquiring, he didn't assume it was for sale. As for you being 'insulted', what? get over yourself.

YANBU to avoid ordering pizza from them again as you didn't like their pizza. The other things wouldn't bother me - although if your bf had said the car was not for sale and the delivery person persisted, that would have been unprofessional.

The pizza guy and being 'unprofessional', made me laugh Grin. I imagined @OP hoiking her bosom up, Hyacinth style. He's just delivering Pizza and asked about a car on his way out.

Nonsense. The man clearly exceeded the remit of his role and was very possibly in breech of the code of conduct for pizza delivery. I think he should be reported to his professional body and investigated by the ombudsman.

Flangelica · 06/07/2022 14:19

It's not weird and delivery guys hardly have to be massivelg 'professional'. If they're civil and not pervy and they bring your food in good time, I think that's them done, no? Having a normal chat is hardly weird or inappropriate?

BooseysMom · 06/07/2022 14:20

Funnily enough the same thing happened to us op! It was a pizza guy delivering leaflets and he asked ne if our car was for sale. Tbf it looks like it'd been dumped on our drive, flat tyres, covered in dust! It wasn't for sale as it happens but my DH got in touch with them and told them he would sell it but it would need a MOT and we have heard nothing since!

Blossomandbee · 06/07/2022 14:21

Pizza delivery places often buy old cheap cars to use for deliveries, nothing weird about it!

Gh12345 · 06/07/2022 14:24

I wouldn't have thought about it for more than a minute

Redglitter · 06/07/2022 14:25

You're overthinking so many different things here its unbelievable

Thistooshallpass01 · 06/07/2022 14:29

Very strange post and thought process

Maybe he seen it and thought in the current climate it’d be cheaper to run than his current car? Especially if he delivers as a sideline, his petrol could be costing a fortune. My old Honda practically ran on air.

what make & model of car is it? also, really think you’ve made something out of nothing. Likelihood is, the lad has been keeping an eye out for a cheap car.

Annoyingkidsmusic · 06/07/2022 14:34

ThePumpkinPatch · 06/07/2022 13:52

Erm.....to be a delivery car?! Sounds like it would be an ideal candidate for deliveries - cheap and not special!

Are you quite alright? Have you been smoking something? Since when is a simple question suspicious?!?!?!

Love this response…. To the point! It appears common sense is not so common these days 😬😂

TheVolturi · 06/07/2022 14:37

LittleSockOfHorrors · 06/07/2022 14:01

Yes you are. It is the OPs. It's not her boyfriend's.

Then why did he not know if it was for sale or not...

DenholmElliot1 · 06/07/2022 14:38

OP do you mind if I ask you when was the last time you went out and had fun? IE, went to the cinema/bowling/seaside/crazy golf/picnic in the park type fun?

Tonty · 06/07/2022 14:39

@TheVolturi Probably because he was being as 'precious' as his girlfriend.

purplecorkheart · 06/07/2022 14:46

The car thing would not worry me. A neighbour has their son's car who abroad at the moment on their driveway and they are often asked if it is for sale. This is because there are very few second hand cars available locally.

The multiple Business thing is not that unusual is it? The local pharmacy here is owned by the same person who owns a local pub, shop,.

mam0918 · 06/07/2022 14:53

I wouldn't accept the junk mail, I dont need it and managed to order fine without it - that would bother me most.

Comment about the car is wierd if its not advertised for sale but that said someone has put a letter through out letter box every couple of months for 10 years asking to buy our 'empty' house (not bloody empty we are a family of 5 with 2 pet and in most of the time bar school runs and weekends. I know our garden is not the most landscaped but its clear we arent abandoned, currently just put a trampoline and toys in the garden plus we just had new outdoor lights fitted, all very obviously yet still got another letter just the other day). Its clearly just someone trying their luck.

If you thought the pizza was shite then dont order it again, it has nothing to do with how many businesses they own... pizza hut and dominoes seem to do fine with litrally hundreds of stores/resteraunt lol.

I mean a tire company recommend what resteraunt to eat at... companies do branch out.

AryaStarkWolf · 06/07/2022 14:54

I wouldn't order from them again because the Pizza wasn't great, the other stuff is inconsequential

steff13 · 06/07/2022 14:55

It's unlikely that the delivery man owns the pizza shop, right? And asking if the car was for sale does not indicate that he's running some sort of car-related business. He probably just thought he might want to buy it for his personal use or perhaps he knows someone who's looking for a car.

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 06/07/2022 14:55

The only way I could see it as insulting is if you think you are the car. You're not a car OP, you're safe.

EatDiamondsForBreakfast · 06/07/2022 14:57

@ThePumpkinPatch ’for a delivery car’ that made me laugh so much - thank you!!! 😆

been and done it. · 06/07/2022 14:59

We have an old 4 x 4 parked on our front drive.... quite a few people knock on the door asking if it's for sale.. not really weird... one day hopefully it will be!

PollenHigh · 06/07/2022 15:00

He asked a question, your boyfriend answered it. I don’t see the issue or why it’s “unprofessional”.

A Dominos driver once asked me about the area we live in because she was looking to move and it was one of the areas she’d been recommended. I had a chat with her, answered her questions, closed the door, ate my pizza, didn’t give it a minute further thought.

You’ve answered your own question. He wants it for parts. This is totally normal. People round here often knock on and ask if a car is for sale if it looks a bit of an old banger.

BiFoldChampion · 06/07/2022 15:04

Literally people are weird! Come on OP chill.

I wonder if the bidding war between Netflix and Amazon Prime for the film rights is underway yet?
