Strange comment from delivery guy

PinkStarAtNight · 06/07/2022 12:49

We ordered pizza last night from a takeaway place we don't use very often because it was quite late and this was one of the few places still open.

Boyfriend answered the door to get the pizza and was there talking to him longer than you would expect. When he came back he told me that the delivery guy had asked whether our car (parked on the drive) was for sale. Boyfriend said it wasn't his car so couldn't say and the delivery guy said 'if it is then call the number on the takeaway leaflet'. He then gave Boyfriend another leaflet for the takeaway place, plus one for a takeaway under a different name that we have seen before (they're clearly run by same people) and leaflets for other businesses like blinds and flooring, with the same business name as the takeaway.

Boyfriend said its maybe because the car was parked a little bit on the grass rather than fully on the drive and so it looked like it was for sale. Even so, AIBU to think this was really strange and unprofessional from the delivery guy? Also AIBU to not order from them again as it seems they have lots of different businesses going on, meaning pizza isn't going to be their speciality (the pizza we got wasn't great) and it also seems dodgy to me?

Op the whole thing is odd. To find it insulting someone wants to buy your car and feel that if you make pizzas you can’t own other businesses.

can you even logically see it?

NerrSnerr · 06/07/2022 13:26

There's a shortage of cheap cars at the moment, you can't just get a banger for £800 like you could a few years ago.

He just wants to buy a cheap car. That is all.

Don't think it's related to the pizza not being great.

ToddlerTimes · 06/07/2022 13:30

I think you need to chill out...First world problems 🙄

Blake1981 · 06/07/2022 13:33

@PinkStarAtNight What a truly difficult time for you 😂😂😂😂😂

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 06/07/2022 13:35

@PinkStarAtNight

It's a very old car. Still looks OK - clean, no scratches etc - but its not modern at all and quite small. I can't see why someone would want to buy it, apart from to sell it for parts, or if they were desperate for a car and couldn't afford to spend much and assumed it would be cheap as its old. I also can't work out what made him think it might be for sale. I found it insulting some how.

Why was someone being interested in your car 'insulting?' Confused He didn't say 'can I buy that rusty nail on the drive for a tenner so I can sell it for scrap metal.' So I fail to see the issue.

Also, as has been said, some people do have more than one business. I know a number of people who have eateries/takeaways, and also a couple of little convenience stores, or a small car-lot where they buy and sell second hand cars, and also a little nail bar etc etc...

Even in Corrie/ Eastenders etc, people own the pub and also a shop or a car lot or a small loan company or a beauty salon/tanning booth etc etc... It's really not that unusual. Even a couple of extended family members of mine own a small shop and a hairdressing salon, and my neighbour owns a business repairing bodywork damage to cars, but also has a decorating business (painting/ decorating/ hanging wallpaper etc...) As I said, not that unusual!

My thoughts are with her and her family at this difficult time............. 😔

ifIwerenotanandroid · 06/07/2022 13:38

Get nicer pizzas elsewhere.

Don't worry about the car query. People ask for all sorts of reasons. A guy at a petrol station asked if I was thinking of selling my car; I later found out that there'd just been a car magazine article about that make/model/age & the price quoted was astronomical. Sadly, mine wasn't one of the rare ones with the high price, just a normal one, but I guess he'd read the article.

shivawn · 06/07/2022 13:43

If you don't like the food then don't order again. Don't know what seems dodgy about having more than one business.

Moveorstay2022 · 06/07/2022 13:45

I think it's a joke and very sad that you would stop buying this poor guy's pizza because he is entrepreneurial and has other businesses, yet you wouldn't stop shopping at somewhere like M&S just because they moved into homeware. Even these big corporates started somewhere

Moveorstay2022 · 06/07/2022 13:48

And there really is no "speciality" required to make pizza. My cousin bought a pizza takeaway which is now very successful. He had no takeaway or catering experience. Like many things, all it requires is hard work

rocksonrocks · 06/07/2022 13:49

In that case OP, don't ever buy from:

Johnson & Johnson
Unilever
Proctor & Gamble
Kellogg's
Volkswagen
Amazon

...you may be horrified at how many different businesses they've got.

What about successful small business ownership is dodgy to you? Or did the driver just "look" dodgy?

TheVolturi · 06/07/2022 13:50

Ummmm, am I the only one wondering why a car is parked on your drive if it isn't yours?

Sallypally0 · 06/07/2022 13:51

Cars are hard to come by at the moment. Not a strange comment at all merely a question.

If the delivery had said to your boyfriend "I like trifles when it is raining and pecan nuts in november" THAT would have been a strange comment.

Anyway, judging by the comments I'm clearly being weird about this so I'll let it go!

Erm.....to be a delivery car?! Sounds like it would be an ideal candidate for deliveries - cheap and not special!

Are you quite alright? Have you been smoking something? Since when is a simple question suspicious?!?!?!

ThePumpkinPatch · 06/07/2022 13:54

This is some serious paranoia, wow

GCRich · 06/07/2022 13:57

I think it is entirely reasonable to decide to stop using a company because the pizza is bad, or because you don't think that the pizza delivery guy was professional. Believing that delivery peeps should politely say "hello, here's your food, bye" and not go off on one about anything else is 100% reasonable.

Equally I don;t think that someone asking if a car is for sale is particularly intrusive or concerning.

GreenWheat · 06/07/2022 13:59

Good grief OP, don't move into my area, you might implode. We get people offering to buy our house, selling usfresh fish or asking if we want to sell our bikes!

AbreathofFrenchair · 06/07/2022 14:00

I love the concern about the fact they have multiple businesses mean they must have a lack of ability to produce an authentic pizza.

Tbf I never expect a takeaway pizza to be "authentic", I'd seek out a proper restaurant if that I was after.

LittleSockOfHorrors · 06/07/2022 14:01

TheVolturi · 06/07/2022 13:50

Yes you are. It is the OPs. It's not her boyfriend's.

Juanmariaramierz · 06/07/2022 14:02

Seriously you won't be able to talk to people soon...everything will have to be done by insta fucking gram....or snap fucking chat...what is this world coming to if you can't ask someone a simple question.

Tonty · 06/07/2022 14:02

The pizza guy and being 'unprofessional', made me laugh Grin. I imagined @OP hoiking her bosom up, Hyacinth style. He's just delivering Pizza and asked about a car on his way out.

Immaterialatthispoint · 06/07/2022 14:06

Errr this is bizarre.

also, pizza being their speciality. Ha! Most takeaway late night pizza places are simply fast food joints, and doubtful they ever even pretended to be specialist pizza productions. It’s not Naples….

10HailMarys · 06/07/2022 14:08

Lots of people buy up old cars for parts and/or export and lots of people own more than one business. My old housemate's boyfriend did this for a living, and would regularly knock on doors or put a business card under the wipers if he saw a parked car that was the kind of vehicle that would be useful for him. He used to ask us to let him know if we spotted anything that might be useful for him.

I really don't see why this is in any way strange or 'unprofessional'. He's a pizza delivery guy, not your bank manager.

5128gap · 06/07/2022 14:14

The only things that would matter to me was the cost and quality of the pizza and speed/reliability of delivery.
How many businesses they had, or the fact the delivery guy was a human being who asked a harmless question about a car, rather than remain strictly within the boundaries of 'professional' pizza related discourse, would be entirely irrelevant.
