To ask if this is normal re teabags??

When I make a cup of tea, I put the used teabag straight in the compost bin. All other members of the household leave them in the spoon rest (like the attached) until there's a tower of teabags.

I would prefer them to go straight in the bin as I find this unsightly, but apparently this is highly unreasonable request and would add unnecessary steps to the (apparently highly complex and exhausting) process of making a cup of tea.

I pile them up and bin them when cool so they don't make condensation in the bin.

SingingSands · 06/07/2022 15:29

I put mine straight in the bin because I am terribly uptight about this. Blush

DH dumps them on the countertop to "pick up later" and I don't know why I've not buried him in the garden yet...

I put teabags straight into the compost bin too.

DH leaves them in the sink Angry I wonder sometimes if it's classed as unreasonable behaviour and therefore grounds for divorce.

Oh, definitely divorce-worthy. This bloke got it, but unfortunately too late...

YABU putting tea bags in the compost. They contain plastic. Unless you buy v expensive ones. They don't biodegrade

mast0650 · 06/07/2022 16:22

We put them in a little dish and empty later when they are a bit drier. Otherwise they might drip on the way to the compost bin. Or just generally make it a bit wet. So I prefer to wait. Also means slightly fewer trips, but that's not the main reason.

AgentMagenta · 06/07/2022 16:28

I put mine in a re-useable takeaway coffee cup. It contains them nicely until it gets nearly full and then they go in the bin.

KitKattaktik · 06/07/2022 16:29

We have 2 large jars with a lid that we alternate putting all fruit/veg peelings and teabags in during the day.

(One in use, one in the wash lol)

It's emptied into the compost bin each evening and the cleaned empty one put in its place ready.

XenoBitch · 06/07/2022 16:30

I put them in a little dish. When there are loads (and they have cooled), I cut them open and pour the tealeaves into a compost bag.

Not true. Most manufacturers now use biodegradable or plant based plastics. I buy Yorkshire Tea and they've been doing it for a while

Not the point of your question, but you do know most tea bags are not compostable? They have particles of plastic in so I empty the leaves into the compost but the bag itself goes in the bin. x
The only ones that I am aware are fully compostable are clipper and I think of tips.

And Yorkshire. And PG Tips.

Most are now recyclable I think.

My mum bought me one of those little plates. I do t drink tea though so it's for her benefit when she visits. She leaves the teabag on there to reuse if she wants a second cup of tea!

Reuse it, that won't make tea it'll make dishwater!

WonderingWanda · 06/07/2022 17:01

Mine go straight in the compost bin. My parents always did the tea bag stack in a dish on the side, no idea why as they've never had a compost bin.

Davyjones · 06/07/2022 17:05

I have nice small bin on the side for all kitchen waste. Everything goes in there. Made my life easier

but yes I grew up with teabags collecting on the side

I think it becomes unsightly if you grew up differently

ScattyHattie · 06/07/2022 17:10

I've reused the little glass Gu dessert pots for used teabags to cool and avoid sweaty bin. Not sure why nobody in your family can tip the last into the bin before adding another.

I have no idea why people insist that teabags should lie in state, but DH is one of them and I love him so I bought a tiny plate for the purpose. These acts of selflessness keep a marriage together ❤️

HE IS WRONG AND ONE DAY I WILL SNAP AND DUMP THE WHOLE FESTERING MOUNTAIN ON HIS PILLOW AND SHOVE THE TINY PLATE SOMEWHERE EYE-WATERING

There isn't a jury in the world that would convict.

HeckyPeck · 06/07/2022 14:06

I always thought that's what the spoon dishes were for! 😲

I will continue with my teabag tower building anyway ☕😁

Same! I never knew they were a "spoon rest". I thought their primary function was for used teabags.

Herecomestreble1 · 06/07/2022 17:15

There is a special place in hell for people that put them in the sink! What the fuck is the point? There are few things worse than forgetting some inconsiderate arsehole has done that, until you've already poured your washing up water away, and then have to squeeze it back out of an old tea bag to put in the bin. Eugh.

angieloumc · 06/07/2022 17:48

I use loose tea leaves in a single size glass teapot, I'd like to say it's because I'm trying to do my bit for the environment but really it's because I'm convinced I can taste the plasticy teabag itself.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 06/07/2022 21:30

WonderingWanda · 06/07/2022 16:59

Ha, I reuse too! 😆Most teabags have enough oomph in them that I can get 2 big cups out of one. I don't like my tea strongly brewed/stewed though so that's probably why.

2Rebecca · 06/07/2022 21:44

I hate people leaving manky tea bags around. Fine leave it for 5 minutes to drain slightly and cool but most people just don't return to tidy it away and expect the magic pixie to put it in the bin for them

popcorndiva · 06/07/2022 21:48

I have a little posh dish next to the kettle. Usually dispose a couple of hours later before they dry out too much and get stuck on dish.

CaptainCorellisXylophone · 06/07/2022 22:23

Leaving a tea bag anywhere other than the bin falls into the broader category of Other twats leaving behind jobs for me to do (that are not mine) and they all give me rage

ScarlettSunset · 06/07/2022 22:30

I have one of those little dishes. It was advertised and sold to me as a teabag dish, definitely NOT a spoon rest.
So I too put my teabags on it, and then put them into the compost caddy at the end of each day, when they've had a chance to dry out a little.

CandyLeBonBon · 06/07/2022 22:31

I have a teabag dish. Because life.

SilentBob · 06/07/2022 22:37

Spoon rest?

Spoon. Rest? I had no idea.

I thought it was a designated area for hot bags to cool before you disposed of them. That's why they're shaped like tea items, in my head.

If any disclaimer were needed, or I was called as a witness in court with regards to this, I drink very little tea (maybe 3 cups a year) and I wash my spoons (not a euphemism) after every use. Why would they need to rest? What have they been up to?
