To ask if this is normal re teabags??

When I make a cup of tea, I put the used teabag straight in the compost bin. All other members of the household leave them in the spoon rest (like the attached) until there's a tower of teabags.

I would prefer them to go straight in the bin as I find this unsightly, but apparently this is highly unreasonable request and would add unnecessary steps to the (apparently highly complex and exhausting) process of making a cup of tea.

I let them cool down, but only because our food waste caddy thing uses those biodegradable compost bags and they warn you not to put hot things in them. In any other situation they'd go straight in the appropriate bin.

Even when I leave them to cool down, I don't pile them up. When I make a cuppa, I put the teabag from the previous cuppa in the bin then.

It's not a male thing
It's just different priorities and different bug bears

Can't help thinking sone people have too much time on their hands to worry about used teabags !

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 06/07/2022 14:21

Tea bags? What is that scummy stuff that floats about on top of the tea with tea bags? What ever it is, it’s too much for us. Leaf tea, once a day, the cold leaves go into a bin in the utility room then into the compost bin. Messy, but no floating islands.

Comefromaway · 06/07/2022 14:25

My mother in law bought me a teabag plate thingy. I threw it away because as far as I am concerned, teabags go straight in the bin (our food caddy is under the sink)

KatherineJaneway · 06/07/2022 14:26

I live alone but mine stay in a pile until cool and then when I next pass, bin it is.

Comefromaway · 06/07/2022 14:27

Father in law keeps putting them in my nice shiny new sink. Now that is gross!

RoundaboutRacer · 06/07/2022 14:28

We have a little pot for teabags that then gets emptied into the food waste bin.

BooseysMom · 06/07/2022 14:29

I'd get rid of the spoon rest. Or write PUT IT IN THE COMPOST BIN YOU TWAT on it.

😂

DH leaves them in a pile for me to put in a compost teabag tub by the sink when I get home. They then stay there drying out all week until I can be bothered to rip them apart and put the tea leaves into the compost bin. I even rip the plastic-free one and tip the tea out as they don't seem to break down easily.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/07/2022 14:30

I've come home this week to find a tiny flip top bin near the kettle and one of those bloody twee teapot dishes the other side of the kitchen. In both cases, the offending purchaser passes the literal fucking kitchen bin in order to reach the means of hoarding literal fucking rubbish.

I recommend divorce/offering for adoption.

dudsville · 06/07/2022 14:38

Both are problematic. Straight into the bin, means the bin gets a little steamy momentarialy - not want you want in a bin. Left in the tea rest - obvs - unsightly.

Babdoc · 06/07/2022 14:39

Chris McCausland does a lovely stand up routine about spoon rests - which he calls a “death row” for spoons and tea bags.
He asks why forks don’t need to stop for breath on the way to the dishwasher, or await an appeal before being incarcerated therein.
I think it’s vaguely revolting to leave soggy used teabags anywhere visible in the kitchen. Mine go straight in the food caddy bin. And I don’t use liners either, I just regularly rinse the caddy after emptying.

Irishfarmer · 06/07/2022 14:41

@FallopianTubeTrain 😂tea bag lying in state 😂

They'd put a hole straight through my compost bag if I put them straight in so I have the same little plate you have

Autumn101 · 06/07/2022 14:47

We have the little teapot shaped dish, ours has a picture of a cow on it. I bought it as teen DC seem incapable of getting the tea bag to the other side of the kitchen to the bin without dripping about 5 gallons of tea everywhere. They make great tea and always make me one on request so it’s a small price to pay

HannahSternDefoe · 06/07/2022 14:54

I have a tea bag bin which gets tipped into the garden waste wheelie when it gets full.

In your shoes, I'd hide the spoon rest. Brew

motogirl · 06/07/2022 14:55

Mine go straight in the bin, no compost collection here (and no space for my own)

LadyCampanulaTottington · 06/07/2022 14:57

I have a naice ceramic bowl beside the kettle where the teabags go until they're dry.

Otherwise they cause condensation and mould in the bin.

CatChant · 06/07/2022 14:59

Ours get put into a small pot and once a day someone, usually me, tears them open and puts the leaves into the compost caddy and the ripped bags into the bin.

Yodaisawally · 06/07/2022 14:59

I don't drink tea. This fucks me off. A lot. Just put them in the bin and don't leave the tea spoon(s) on the side dripping gross tea when there is a spoon rest.

RedLorryTime · 06/07/2022 15:01

Tea bags? What is that scummy stuff that floats about on top of the tea with tea bags?

I can't say that I've ever noticed any "stuff" when using teabags.

OP. I'm with you on this. I can't bear to look at used teabags.

mineallmine · 06/07/2022 15:01

I don't understand that?? Why wouldn't you make your cup of tea and put the teabag straight into the compost?? Even my husband does this, and I complain about his very annoying habits to anyone who'll listen. He does leave the skins of mandarin oranges on the lid of the compost caddy rather than lift the lid to put them in though. I'm not sure why. But since he drinks a million cups of tea a day, I'd rather the teabags went in.

He's wrong, you're right. That would wreck my head.

Comefromaway · 06/07/2022 15:03

Scummy stuff depends on how hard or soft your water is, nothing to do with teabags

tulips27 · 06/07/2022 15:04

The bags need to dry out before they go in the compost bin otherwise you get bin juice.

dragonDan · 06/07/2022 15:05

Not the point of your question, but you do know most tea bags are not compostable? They have particles of plastic in so I empty the leaves into the compost but the bag itself goes in the bin. x
The only ones that I am aware are fully compostable are clipper and I think of tips.

Campervangirl · 06/07/2022 15:07

Not unreasonable to be annoyed about it, my oh used to leave used tea bags on the side of the sink until I launched one at the back of his head 😁

Interesting re Clipper, our company supply these, I though it could be due to environmental reasons.
