AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

Co-op milk has gone from £1.20 to £1.70 in a few weeks

Loobyloo68 · 05/07/2022 18:23

I buy large joints of beef pork and lamb if its available in the yellow sticker shelf. I cut the joints into 3, if I'm lucky enough to get a leg of lamb, I cook it and then freeze the remaining meat for another day. I've got 2 dogs and a cat and their food bill is bigger than mine. My mum says she can remember her grandad having a dog and a cat when she was a kid, and they ate what he did, no such thing as pet food!

Tabbouleh · 05/07/2022 18:24

I bought a veg stir fry kit from Tesco for £2.50. Julienned veg, noodles and a sauce. Served 3 for dinner with fried eggs on top. Sauce probably full of sugar so may use my own next time.

I cook Asian most of the time with ingredients from Asian stores. Very cheap.

Your dog is your family. How dare they suggest this?

@XenoBitch I'm so sorry to hear that x

speakout · 05/07/2022 18:25

HauntingScream I so agree. Stretching meat with healthy foods is far better than switching to highly processed cheap meats.
I make lots of meals with just a little meat- like you I can feed 5 people with 3 or 4 chicken thighs.
Rice or noodle stir fries, usind a small amount of meat, shedded and seasoned well with plenty veg will give everyonne a heaped portion of food at minimal cost.

Highflow · 05/07/2022 18:26

Whiskas cat food was £4.50 for 6 tins, overnight it went up to £6.25. How can it increase so sharply?

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 05/07/2022 18:28

on the 26th April, a story on the BBC website said that, according to the World Bank, the war in Ukraine would cause the biggest price rises for 50 years.

I suppose 10 weeks later, here it is. I hope it doesn't get much worse but I think we have to take it on the chin as the cost of supporting Ukraine which has to be worth it.

Cat food, what the hell happed to that. Not long ago the pouches were £2.75 then £3.50 now £4.50 in Morrisons. That level of increase puts inflation at over 60%.

how is this right?

I’ve just read in the paper that Tesco is now refusing to stock about 5 different brands of cat food due to the huge increase in price.

8 sausages for 80p?
I wonder what they're made of.
That sounds offaly cheap!😀

This was funnier that it had business being 😂

Bubblebubblebah · 05/07/2022 18:39

Re the frozen veg. Absolutely agree with pps. I always use frozen for things like egg fried rice. Frozen fruit in a freezer for yogurt etc. Frozen herbs.
Frozen fish can also be absolutely fine. I always have white fish fillets in my freezer.

Frsh veg. It's really not that bad either if you work with basics. I mean like carrot is 45p a kg. A KG! In tesco. Plenty of health in that.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/07/2022 18:43

@Cyw2018, red lentils just disintegrate when added to e.g. any mince based dish, so I doubt anyone with texture issues would be bothered, or even notice them.

Dried red lentils are a relatively cheap source of protein and also very good added to e.g. a vegetable soup. I don’t think think tinned lentils can work out anywhere near as cheap.

Bozlem80 · 05/07/2022 18:45

I’m living off toast (freeze the bread), cup a soups & crackers, I spend about £5-£7 a week on food, I buy a tub of I can’t believe it’s not butter from Asda once a fortnight for £1 & get the cheapest toilet roll, luckily in lockdown I hoarded a load of cleaning stuff & toiletries, lost my job nearly 2 mths ago & desperately need another, JSA is getting me nowhere. I live on my own don’t have family or friends & it seems an age since I had a hot meal, I would give anything for a takeaway 😂

We were in Australia a few weeks ago, and food there is extortionate, although wages are higher.

£10 for an iceburg lettuce - I don't think I'll ever get over that one!

Was that because it’s autumn/winter there so it was out of season?

amigreedytowantmore · 05/07/2022 18:47

Just been in coop and the big Lurpak in there is still £4 so I think Sainsbury is just profiteering off the £7.50 price that hit the headlines this week

celticprincess · 05/07/2022 18:48

I shop at sainsburys. They’ve introduced the nectar prices if you do scan and shop yourself. So a lot of the increases I haven’t noticed as much as I’m getting them discounted - less than what they used to be in some cases. They seem to be based on what you buy so different for each person.

I’ve always been a bit of a skinflint with some items though. I only ever buy a pack of chocolate wrapped biscuits if they are £1. Sometimes it’s own brand and sometimes it’s branded on offer. It changes week to week what I buy. Same with crisps in multipacks. I stick with frozen veg where possible. But some things are noticeable and staples such as bread. The 55p sainsburys own brand brown loaf is now 75p. Milk is definitely creeping up. I prefer Philadelphia to own brand cream cheese and use it to make cheese pasta but only buy it when the small tubs are £1 or the bigger tubs £2 so stock up. Some offers come round on a bit of a cycle I’ve noticed.

I do buy ready meals for work just for speed and convenience and usually get the £1 ones but they’ve all gone up to £1:25 now. I know there are quicker cheaper healthier ways to take a hot lunch but this works for me for 2 days a week.

KissThaRain · 05/07/2022 18:50

Lurpack spreadable 500g was 3.75 now a fiver ffs

Pedallleur · 05/07/2022 18:54

Lurpak now security tagged in Tesco. People mention the war but its not a global conflict. If it was Africa it would struggle to make the news. Unforunately global food supplies and consumerism is now catching up with us

chiffchaffchiff · 05/07/2022 18:55

Get you milk delivered in returnable glass bottles @ £0.89 per pint.🙂

I had to give up my Milk & More delivery in spring. The new milkman kept leaving it sitting in the sun instead of putting it in the milk minder. Had more than a few curdled bottles and customer service were useless. They suggested the minder must be too hidden (it was in front of the porch as per delivery instructions and illuminated by the street light directly outside the house).

Have you seen the size of Ukraine and Russia? That's a lot of land for food production.

AliasGrape · 05/07/2022 18:57

In Lidl at the weekend, not even a full shop we just needed a top up of fruit, bit of salad stuff, I got a quiche too and some breadsticks and crackers. Would have come well under £20 a few months ago, cost £30. We used to do a full weeks shop for about that!

Things like lurpack used to be a once a year treat though (Christmas) not an everyday staple.

butter used to be a once a year treat? Confused

Agreed, also branded cereal, we had Kelloggs Coco Pops at Christmas only, my parents simply couldn't afford brand names like that. Now we all have multiples of everything all the time

DuarPorte thanks for the ideas- I love reading other people's menu plans.

I would also second the idea of frozen veg, it isn't quite as good as fresh, but in a casserole or curry is a good ingredient. I have started using frozen casserole veg- Morrisons is a good one- 1Kg mix of carrots, swede, leek and onion for £1.19, once it is added to a stew and cooked very acceptable.
I also like their frozen fine green beans, which can be expensive, again, perfect for my middle easterns stews.
Surprisingly the Morrisons frozen diced beef is good, £3.99 for 500g, I am wary of frozen chopped meat, but this one is great, very lean, no complaints.

@spespeakout what's even better is reduced/whoops prepared veg when its about 12p going straight in the freezer!
