AIBU TO BE SHOCKED BY THIS INCREASE?!

So I’ve just gotten over the fuel increase, made some changes and become more aware of the energy I’m using both at home and car.

Went to Lidl today. I buy 2 tubs of cream cheese a week, Lidl Goldessa Classic Cream Cheese 200g. It’s been 65p for as long as I can remember. Today shop assistant was sorting shelves and organising labels ect. New label £1.19. I asked if that was the price of the 65p cream cheese to which she said Yh, it’s not changed yet it’s 75p now but will be £1.19.
HOW? How? Can something almost double in price? Also when I was it 75p 😵‍💫

I noticed the other cheeses all being marked up too some by 80p-£1. Add this increase to even 1/3 of a shop and it’s going to be unmanageable!
Has anyone else noticed prices on things they buy almost doubling?
What is the plan to keep costs down?
Where do we go from Lidl’s own soft cheese 😭

I buy Asda essentials range now. It’s actually not that bad. Pack of 8 sausages are 80p

Neverendingdust · 05/07/2022 00:37

Yep M&S is the same, 50p here £1 there, it all adds up, like you say even on 1/3 of the average weekly shop it makes it suddenly much more expensive. You really do have to think strategically when out shopping now. Those who were struggling before I can’t imagine how they must be managing now, I wince and I can afford the increases, peoples anxiety levels are going to be through the roof.

What happens when you literally can not afford to live? It seems like Poverty will be a lifestyle some people will aspire to once they’re well and truly penniless.

This week I'm literally living off toast for lunch (getting the discounted loaves and freezing them, and taking 2 slices out a day to defrost), and for evening meal cheap pasta and home made cheese sauce with a bit of broccoli for the week (made a huge batch and half of it now resides in le freezer), with the odd £1 frozen pizza from Iceland (for a quid, it's pretty decent tbh), thrown in for good measure as a 'treat'! I heard that it will be like this for the next couple of years with this level of food costs, but not sure if that's true. I mean, who really knows.

feeona123 · 05/07/2022 00:59

I think Aldi ‘stackers’ crisps have had about the same increase!

XenoBitch · 05/07/2022 01:32

I do my main shop in Lidl... was always under a tenner for loads of things (I live alone).
Now it is about £15 for what feels like the same stuff.
I liked to get the family pack of pork belly slices.. they were £2.99... over the last couple of months, have gone up to £3.89.
Iceland chicken thighs were less than £2 for a kilo.. they then went to £2 for 750g.. now they cost £3. Is ridiculous.
I get a lot of chicken for my dog. But then I am on UC, and have been told on social media, that taxpayer money is not for pets, and that I should sell my dog.

I really like the tins of dahl from Sainsbury's. They've been £1 for a long time. Now £1.80 a tin

The next couple of years? And then what? Never known prices decrease at this rate

caringcarer · 05/07/2022 04:57

My son only told me yesterday that the used to spend £40-45 on food sop each week but now the same food shop is £60-65. Add on fuel increase and utility increase and it all adds up. He is lucky because I am going up to see him and will fill his small freezer and fridge for him. Others might not have family who can help

Trouble is, there’s hardly any meat in them 🤷‍♀️

SmileyPiuPiu · 05/07/2022 06:12

I'm wondering how much of it is we paid too little for our food and now we are paying the "real" cost. Like are farmers still under paid for the milk?

RudsyFarmer · 05/07/2022 06:25

I read an article a few days ago that crude oil could quadruple in cost if Russia decreases production. We are honestly completely fucked at that point.

Bighairydogs · 05/07/2022 06:29

Tesco Greek yogurt has gone from £1 for the large tub last year to £1.65. I refuse for fucking plain yogurt to be a luxury but I’m thinking twice about it now 😩

hatchyu · 05/07/2022 06:35

and prices are still going to go up.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/07/2022 06:36

Same here in the USA. A plain roasting chicken is $8. Eating apples are $1.15 apiece. Many food items have just vanished from the shelves. Where there used to be a selection of say eight different brands of strawberry jam, there are now four- the store brand and a few choices. Can't find bananas or fresh cherries.

Even the farm shops have so much less choice. Either they did not plant crops last year (due to covid) or they could not harvest (due to lack of workers).

SEJ1789 · 05/07/2022 06:41

Yes good is going up and having to make adjustments. However it seems that people think supermarkets are doing it just because. The 95p milk for example that farmer needs to live and make an income so you know they can buy food and fuel for their families too, they will be feeling the pinch as much as the next person. I’m pretty sure no one wants to be putting their prices up but it’s the reality at the moment, and if they don’t increase companies will go bust and food will increase even more. It’s just a horrible cycle at the moment

Sirzy · 05/07/2022 06:47

Every week I do the shopping and spend the whole time saying “how much”

milk seems to be jumping up every week.

80p for 8 sausages? Can you imagine what's in them? 😳
I'd rather go without or have something veggie than eat them!

And that is another very real issue we are going to face. The healthy options often aren’t the cheapest options so between meal skipping and then having to buy cheap and cheerful food it is going to have a massive knock on on peoples health.

Jennybeans401 · 05/07/2022 07:07

I've seen a massive price hike, I have noticed that I'm paying a third more for mist things and I am struggling to feel comfortable in my budget.

MrsGamgee · 05/07/2022 07:09

Yep, I noticed the tubs of greekstyle yogurt I get from Aldi have gone from 49p to 65p, the large tubs have gone from £1 to £1.09 to £1.25.

Its not a massive increase but when that is happening to every item it makes a huge difference. I actually panicked at the till yesterday as I was looking at my full trolley thinking we might not have enough in our budget to pay for it.

DH asked if we should get some butter, I said no as it's too expensive and picked up a cheap tub of margerine instead. I normally always use butter for baking but it's just now too expensive so have moved to an unhealthy substitute.

FireGivesWarmth · 05/07/2022 07:10

I'm wondering too...so skint already

Mary Berry always uses marg.

Prices are sky rocking.
