to ask, if you're under 35, how much do you have in savings?

Bit of a CF question, but I am just wondering how good/bad to feel about my current savings. Considering a move back to the UK but very unsure of what level I'm on in comparison to people my age in the UK (I'm 33).

If you don't mind letting me know it would be really helpful! If not, thanks anyway.

you go first…

Helpyou · 04/07/2022 11:26

I bought a property by myself last year so pooled a lot of my savings in to that. I'm trying to rebuild it back up but have about £5k in there at the moment. The way things are going though with fuel etc... I don't think I'll be able to build it up as much as I want but I'm hoping not to have to dip in to it unless an emergency.

JustFrustrated · 04/07/2022 11:28

It's dotted around, and as are renovating changes frequently.

But around 2k and 1k gets added every month.

CoastalWave · 04/07/2022 11:28

I'm not under 35 and I only have £2k at the minute thanks to covid and my DH being out of work for a considerable amount of time.

Savings are there for a rainy day - we had one, a massive one. Now we are screwed if we have another one!

Flangelica · 04/07/2022 11:29

No, I'm not saying because whenever i read threads like these, the OP gets ripped apart for 'stealth boasting' if they mention their figure!

If you don't want to say then feel free not to!

Thank you!

Are the fuel costs/rising costs as bad as it sounds on MN and in the news?

Lazypuppy · 04/07/2022 11:30

We save go spend, so build it up then do something to the house or go on holiday, so right now, less than £2k but we can build it back up quite quickly

Herecomestreble1 · 04/07/2022 11:30

30 and DH and I have about 20k in savings thanks only to living with parents for a few years. It will soon all be spent on a house deposit, so no proper savings for a rainy day!

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 04/07/2022 11:33

YABU to ask others to share but not be prepared to share yourself.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/07/2022 11:35

What do you hope to gain from this? Everyone’s circumstances are different: rent/home owner/children/health issues….
How will knowing what x people have in savings inform you decision re moving back to the UK?
I moved back to the uk and bought a house for cash…helpful? Of course not…

Mushroo · 04/07/2022 11:36

I won’t give figures. But to give you an idea, we have a 60% LTV in our house, and about 6 months worth of income saved across ISAs, normal savings and premium bonds.

Pensions wise, partner is on a defined benefit, and I have about a years salary in my pot. (I’m 30)

Do an 'advanced search' for other threads like this. When the OP shares they are usually told they're stealth boasting (if they have a lot) or being insensitive/thoughtless if they don't have much and say that it's not much, by people who have less and so then feel upset.

This is a genuine question as I am considering a move back to the UK and am not wanting to accidentally start any MN drama, I know what AIBU can be like!

Feel free not to share, as I said.

This. I'm normally happy to share in these threads but you're being a bit weird about it OP.

Seeingadistance · 04/07/2022 11:37

I’m a bit older, but I would say I have the same in savings as you do.

TheGoogleMum · 04/07/2022 11:38

I'm 34 and don't have proper savings. We have a few hundred to help with Christmas but nothing significant. We dojt have enough spare cash ot save more

As I said, wanting to compare myself to others my age in the UK as considering a move.

I am not going to engage with any more posts like this, if you don't want to say then don't.

Well, I don't live in the UK so not sure how relevant that is to you, but I'm saving to buy an appartment eventually and I have 80k€ in the bank plus roughly the same amount's worth in investment. I suppose I could buy already but I'm in another country for work so decided to keep saving til I go home and can properly view apartments (I'm a 13h plane ride away so going home for viewings isn't easy or convenient). I figure the more I save the smaller my mortgage will be and maybe I can aim at a bigger property.

Penfelyn · 04/07/2022 11:41

I'm just 35 for what it's worth

ShanghaiDiva · 04/07/2022 11:41

charliewww · 04/07/2022 11:42

31 and I have £0 savings!

tirednewmumm · 04/07/2022 11:45

Might be worth posting a bit about the type of job you'd be looking for and where you want to live. Dh and I have about £26k (been depleted by Mat leave)
We earn £90k between us and own our home with approx £130k equity so can absorb the cost Of living increase with small changes. With those figures in London we would probably struggle.

HangOnToYourself · 04/07/2022 11:45

I'm 35 and own my house but dont have a huge amount of equity in it as 95% LTV. I have about 8.5k savings and and isa for my son which has about 2k in it so I try to add to both each month. My salary goes up in Sept when I start a new job so will be able to add quite a bit more at that point.

Dinoboymama · 04/07/2022 11:48

30 sahm with 4k saved between us. DH works.
We rent though in hopes of getting enough eventually to buy.
