Bit of a CF question, but I am just wondering how good/bad to feel about my current savings. Considering a move back to the UK but very unsure of what level I'm on in comparison to people my age in the UK (I'm 33).

If you don't mind letting me know it would be really helpful! If not, thanks anyway.

Im 40. I have about 20k in savings.... No mortgage anymore which is a blessing but no pension either which is a huge worry.

TenTree · 04/07/2022 14:09

£15k liquid, plus £50k+ equity across two properties (although one unsaleable atm due to cladding crisis).

Zezet · 04/07/2022 14:13

Around 190k (married and the other 190k would nominally belong to my spouse), renting, 3 kids. 40k through an inheritance of a grandparents, the rest by saving. DH worked abroad for a little while and I have a well-paid job (not IT or finances or big law or medicine though).

Very much NOT representative of our friend groups.

ChampagneLassie · 04/07/2022 14:18

Broad rule of thumb is you should seek to have 6 months living cost in savings. Anything above this is put to a purpose - ie savings to spend on things - house/uni/travel whatever.

Essie274 · 04/07/2022 14:21

DH and I are mid 20s and we have around £75k in savings, but the majority of it will be spent on buying our first house in the next year. ((DISCLAIMER: Almost £50k of our savings were inheritance))

ThreeRingCircus · 04/07/2022 14:22

I'm 34, married with two DDs, have about 50% equity in our house.

Savings are a bit all over the place as some are my personal money but most are joint savings with DH but roughly...

9k of my own savings in Stocks and Shares
5k in general savings just in a standard bank account
20k in premium bonds in my name but joint savings with DH earmarked for house renovations.
40k in my pension

DH has his own personal savings too and a much better pension pot, but is over 35.

ILookAtTheFloor · 04/07/2022 14:25

I'm 35. I would have zero savings if it wasn't for an inheritance, which is around 8k right now and will be increasing upon a house sale, to around £75k.

I'm a homeowner but only because DH is ten years older than me and bought a flat age 22 back in the boom times. Without that, I certainly wouldn't have any property either.

Just luck here, aside from losing my nan!

Tangled123 · 04/07/2022 14:25

I’m 33. I have about £1k set aside for a holiday at the end of the month and my car insurance next year but nothing apart from that. I’ve already bought a house, got married and had a baby so no other major expenses coming up though (and no major debt).
My husband has about £5k saved for any emergencies anyway.

ILookAtTheFloor · 04/07/2022 14:26

Probs have £70k to £100 equity in our house

SusanSHelit · 04/07/2022 14:28

I had about 2k then was made redundant so that hammered by savings. Built it back up to 1.5k and left my partner of 15 years who was abusive and basically had to start from scratch so I have next to no savings now and no idea if I will be able to build them back up again any time soon

KeepingUpWithTheKs · 04/07/2022 14:30

Well I am 28, a single mum to two, working part time and a university student and have £0 savings and around £2,000 personal debt if you don't include student loans

Workyticket · 04/07/2022 14:30

I'm 44 and have savings now - £20k ish dotted around

When I was 35 I had nothing!

Not spending during covid plus a small inheritance meant we cleared debts and started saving properly

Pruella · 04/07/2022 14:32

I had almost nothing at 35 because we put everything into a house. Have loads now at 42, built it right back up.

Lalosalamanca · 04/07/2022 14:33

Major eye roll lol. @Flangelica you're doing great because you HAVE savings. That's all you need to know.

ChickenBurgers · 04/07/2022 14:36

Naff all. Our outgoings are quite high cos of loans and every time we save there’s always something that needs doing, a birthday, something crops up and then we start all over again.

GrandSlamFinalee · 04/07/2022 14:55

I’m mid 20s, have lived independently since the age of 16 and moved countries every two years. I’ve never owned a property or saved for one.

I have about 5k in savings that I don’t touch. Enough so that I can relocate to another country and pay 1 month of accommodation with very little notice (extremely common in my industry).

hatchyu · 04/07/2022 15:00

It's a bit vague as it depends what you need it for surely?

If you move back are you going to buy?

Will you have a job lined up?

Flangelica · 04/07/2022 15:00

Thank you so much for all your answers!

Posting on MN isn't going to give you a representative answer.

Look online, they have population stats on just this.

Also intruiged as to why you started a thread but won't tell anyone how much you have.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 04/07/2022 15:13

Asking for a figure is not going to help. Asking for the number of weeks/months you can survive without an income is a better guideline surely?

Pipsquiggle · 04/07/2022 15:13

Between the ages of 30 and 35 is when I started to save seriously with my BF now DH. We saved up a substantial deposit (£120k) so that we could afford a 4 bed house - we were renting a small flat and essentially bypassed the 'starter home' part of the housing ladder.
2 things changed in this time period -

  1. Our salaries, particulalrly my DH's, went up quite a lot.

  2. Our outgoings remained the same - this was a conscious decision to save for a deposit. We had our first DC in this time period, we bought 2nd hand stuff, didn't do extravagances

So are you going to reveal your savings?

WhatsHoppening · 04/07/2022 15:14

I am 32, DH 31, 2 small kids (primary and nursery)
3K in savings but currently using a bit every month as nursery fees are crippling us. We are limping towards our 30 free hours when hopefully we will have some relief.
We do have approx 220K in equity in our house so although I worry about our mortgage and lack of savings we could sell up and release some if we were really struggling. Hoping reduced childcare costs + salary increases will help us over the next few years.
Stressful though!

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 04/07/2022 15:20

We've recently bought cars from our savings and had a new bath so around £6k left. We have a seperate account where we're saving for a deposit on a second property - the aim for that is £50k and we'll likely reach it by the end of 2023. I'm 28

satelliteheart · 04/07/2022 15:32

Dh and I are both 34, have about £60k in the bank, £15k in shares, another £27k tied up in a share scheme with dh's work which we'll be able to access next year, £500k equity in our house and a btl flat with another £100k equity. But I'm a sahm so it's really important to us that we have enough money to live on should dh be made redundant. When we bought our house we were down to £4k in the bank and it was super stressful although we were both working and didn't have any kids at the time
