You should go to the toilet after every meal

I have just seen this article where Heather Mills claims that we should go the toilet after every meal that we have and not just once a day. Was just a bit in interesting to think about really. The article is linked below.

When I was younger that was my norm. I miss it now I'm down to once a day in the morning. HM is a few years younger than me so she might find her body changes eventually.

Ah, that well-known medical expert Heather Mills. (Why is she suddenly around now? Nobody's heard about her for years)

The linked article is from 2018, not sure why it needed another outing really. Is she doing anything newsworthy currently?

Kanaloa · 02/07/2022 22:53

Thank God for Heather Mills. I’ve been trying to figure out whether I need a poo or not for ages but now I know I can just go after meals when Heather says so.

If you’re a competent adult (or child over 5) you can just go for a poo whenever you feel in your body that you need one surely.

HellonHeels · 02/07/2022 22:55

I have zero interest in Heather Mills' toilet habits. And I prefer to take medical advice from people qualfied to give it.

IronChef · 02/07/2022 23:00

Is this why so many MNers have blokes who spend most of their day and night sitting on the toilet with their phones? Are they all following Heather's words of wisdom? Grin

It’s dogs that need to have a crap shortly after eating, not humans.

Stupid advice. Hmm You can only go when you NEED to. Is she saying you should force yourself?

I don't agree with her advice but you can train or habitualise your body to go at certain times of the day or in response to certain triggers. Most of my friends and family from India were brought up to go to the toilet once a day in the morning before your shower so that you can then feel fresh and clean for the rest of the day. As customs go this one is super convenient by the way as it means you almost never need to use a public toilet except for a wee and aren't caught out in meetings or at other inconvenient times.

@ivykaty44

I’d say ‘always stinky’ 😂

Struggling to see what’s interesting about how often Heather Mills has a shit, to be honest

Suddha · 02/07/2022 23:13

It’s not normal for adults to need to go after every meal. Babies (and puppies) go every time they eat but they grow out of it and eventually go once a day or less. If you’re an adult and you’re still shitting like a baby you have a problem.

CallOnMe · 02/07/2022 23:14

I didn’t read it but I have heard quite a few professionals saying we need to poo more often and I think it’s something to do with the Western diet doesn’t have enough fibre.

She could have just said - eat more fibre.

PollenHigh · 02/07/2022 23:15

I don’t agree.

I’m like clockwork, every morning between 9:30 and 10:00. I specifically avoid booking in calls and meetings at that time for that reason.

fallfallfall · 02/07/2022 23:17

well maybe if i was able to meet my 65gm of fiber a day i might be able to go after each meal. i believe those that are really into yoga believe this as well. i've heard about this many times.

Tombero · 02/07/2022 23:21

There’s obviously been a lot about this in the news this week. Everything I’ve heard has said: you may poo three times a day, or once every three days. But if your normal routine changes then that’s a sign of a problem.
I don’t think a four year old article by someone who isn’t medically trained, and who probably just referenced their own bowel habits, is relevant.

She must be fun to go out for dinner with, or to invite to your dinner party. 'Where's Heather?' On the loo again.

😂

dontbringthatbirdinhere · 02/07/2022 23:31

I think PP have misunderstood what she's saying. I didn't read this as "force yourself to go after every meal", I think she obviously means we should be eating a far more healthy and fibre filled diet in the UK, which would mean we poo more often.

I'm no longer vegan, but know when I make a real effort with my diet and gets lots of veggies/pulses in that I go far more regularly than when I'm eating frozen pizza, drinking lots and look bloated.

ivykaty44 · 02/07/2022 22:25

All that food sitting there is fermenting and poisoning our system.”

we don't shit out food we've eaten though? its dead cells surely?

What? Surely you don't mean it. Of course we poo out food we've eaten! Poo is the food we can't digest or don't need, with cells and mucus. And water.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/07/2022 23:32

"I don't agree with her advice but you can train or habitualise your body to go at certain times of the day or in response to certain triggers."

Clearlynot everyone can or nobody would be suffering from consitpation.

Lipsandlashes · 02/07/2022 23:33

Like a dog? Thanks for the advice, non-medically trained Heather

MangyInseam · 02/07/2022 23:35

She is a bit of a health flake I think. But a lot of people get into all this pseudo-science stuff on toxins, this is just another example.

People's bodies vary a lot on this. Some go after every meal, some once a day, some every few days.

Bobbybobbins · 02/07/2022 23:35

My DS struggles in this area and have had many conversations with medical professionals. One told me the urge to poi is generally strongest after breakfast, then lunch, then weakest after dinner, which I thought was interesting.

To be fair, I bet she would be quite entertaining to have dinner with. You’d hear some tall tales before she excused herself.

LilianLenton · 02/07/2022 23:36

I eat a fair bit of fibre & go when I feel like it, as that seems the best policy TBH. I couldn't give a shit (!) what Heather Mills has to say on the subject. It doesn't seem sensible sitting on the loo getting piles when I don't need a poo, nor am I prepared to make myself wait in discomfort on the basis that I've already had my post-meal toilet session & am not due again for another 3 hours... that way madness (& worse IBS) lies.

What I have found useful for improved bowel function is practicing the full (Asian style) squat. I try to do it several times a day for a few seconds at a time, however some people apparently do it for up to half an hour at a time. Good for flexibility too. And it's great for the thigh muscles, once you get used to it. Weeding the garden etc is much easier as no achey back.

Sparklingbrook · 02/07/2022 23:42
