AIBU - Aldi: How much should this have cost...?

GingerWit · 02/07/2022 20:51

I'm not sure if I should be shocked or I should have realised everything will cost more due to cost of living situation etc and I need to suck it up.

However, Mumsnetter's!

How much do you think the following should have cost?

Small tray of beef pieces
Jar of mango chutney
2 onions
Bag of wonky peppers
3 packets of microwave rice
Small, plastic container
Cheap drinks bottle
Tin of mixed fruits
2 Naan Bread's
Garlic bread
Small tray of Indian bits (bhaji and samosa x2)
Flour
Sugar

One bag of shopping from Aldi. This is also a bit of fun/tongue-in-cheek to help me get over handing over the money when it came time to pay and my daughter needed to unfurl my iron-like grip from my card and put it in the card machine for me while I stood there wondering when are my kids gonna get a job at the ages of 8,9, and 14 and buy me food instead and leave my money alone.

Alas, here I am! So...how much!? Have a guess!

(I didn't get a receipt. Daughter was too busy guiding me out of the store through my veil of tears and catatonic state. I might actually just be a tight-wod!?) Hubby works full-time, I work full-time.

Anyway!

How much!?

(Stffu, Aldi! Stffuuuuuu! hisses)

Not surprised at all. I shop at lidl and my bill has gone up by about 20 euro a week. Without alcohol I spend about 100 euro a week for the three of us. And that's for nothing too outlandishly expensive. Food prices have increased massively.

Jas5mum · 02/07/2022 23:21

About £15. Aldi prices have creeped up recently. My favourite readymade curry used to be £1.80 and now its £2.20.:
Milk was under £1 not that long ago.
Its crazy and its all still cheaper than other supermarkets!

They do sell some loose now including onion's. I got some the other week and some huge loose baking potatoes. The bagged one's usually start sprouting a day after I get them home. So have to peel them. Never had to with these.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 02/07/2022 23:26

I'd love to see the receipt. There's got to be a wine box on there somewhere Grin

Somethingneedstochange · 02/07/2022 23:38

Think it depends on what you get. I remember getting a small trolley once was expecting £25/£30. There was a couple of pre prepared meals treats and fresh veg etc It came to £45.

We are on a healthy eating kick at the moment. The other week I got a trolley full. Mostly veg, salad, fruit, cream, 2 milk, cheese cream cheese etc. Also chicken drumsticks, fish, and Tennessee steaks. As well as bread, wraps cans of pop crisps and two packs of biscuits and some Aldi own version of snickers multipack. I don't do a big shop often. Usually top up as we need it. But it came to £85. Would have cost a lot more in Asda Tesco or Morrisons.

vdbfamily · 02/07/2022 23:40

£30

PortMac · 02/07/2022 23:41

Feel your pain. Australia has become even more expensive, I think the government is going to start charging for air soon.
Its so bloody expensive recently.

Prettypussy · 02/07/2022 23:43

You were ripped off- that shopping list only comes to £32.60 at Ocado!

Superbabe64 · 02/07/2022 23:44

That's why I stopped shopping at Aldi. I think they've conned millions of people in to believing that they are cheaper.

Whydoiwearsomuchleopardprint · 02/07/2022 23:48

£31

HitsAndMrs · 02/07/2022 23:58

Quackpot..
Don't be buying those beef pieces you'll be flat broke.

I’d say there is a fair chance that there was something wrong with the bill on the sense that subverting expensive got swiped twice perhaps of the checkout person didn’t think it had gone through the first time or I’ve had items wrongly priced - one grapefruit rang up over £4 once but I noticed that as soon as it came up (this was at Asda though). Obviously the meat can be quite expensive - my wife has bought rib-eye steaks from Aldi that tasted great pan fried until she told me the price. I would have said this was around £26. Why are you buying microwave rice in packets - it’s tuppence a ton in a big bag - how hard is that to cook?

Mangledrake · 03/07/2022 00:07

Leaving out the two plastic containers, that's less than 25 pounds' worth at Sainsbury's. And that's without looking for cheaper brands - just first choice.
You were overcharged. It would have come to about £20 (food items) at Aldi. Be sure to get a receipt next time.

Happymum12345 · 03/07/2022 00:12

I know things have gone up, but are you sure there hadn’t been a mistake? Lidl once charged me £33 for a bag of crisps -mistakes happen.

Cuckoo48 · 03/07/2022 00:16

From Aldi: £25
More in other supermarkets.

listsandbudgets · 03/07/2022 00:27

My bill at Lidl oce came to well over £100.. I not bought much, no meat, no alcohol, no treats. I queried it and it seemed my peaches had scanned at £82.50 😂

Nomorefuckstogive · 03/07/2022 00:59

£20

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 03/07/2022 01:09

I estimated £35-£40 as unsure on sizing of things like butter and types of containers etc
so went middle size/price on those types of things.
We are a household of 1 adult, three children and three pets our supermarket shop a week is £150-£155, includes cleaning items, pet items, pack-lunch items and toiletries and I’m always mindful of costs of items I’d say your doing well with them costs for three weeks with your family in comparison to us if your cleaning items etc are in with them costs too.
i do agree the total at the end of a shop leaves me deflated all them extra 30/40ps on smaller items and extra £1s on larger items has increased our shop by £30ish pounds a week. No where is a great price anymore.

Somethingneedstochange · 03/07/2022 01:49

That would cost £60/£70 at other supermarkets. Think if you get ready made food that pushes the prices up. Same with anywhere though you get lot's of fresh items you get more for your money.

Friars23 · 03/07/2022 02:32

£45 is a lot but £219 for five people for three weeks is not a lot. I think I am a greedy pig as my shop is £50-£60 a week for one.

Err no, I don't think so.

I calculated it to be under £28 for Waitrose.

Peonyperfection · 03/07/2022 07:50

Was something you bought more than one of over charged, eg you bought 3 packets of something and were charged for 30 packets??

No it wouldn't!
