AIBU - Aldi: How much should this have cost...?

GingerWit · 02/07/2022 20:51

I'm not sure if I should be shocked or I should have realised everything will cost more due to cost of living situation etc and I need to suck it up.

However, Mumsnetter's!

How much do you think the following should have cost?

Small tray of beef pieces
Jar of mango chutney
2 onions
Bag of wonky peppers
3 packets of microwave rice
Small, plastic container
Cheap drinks bottle
Tin of mixed fruits
2 Naan Bread's
Garlic bread
Small tray of Indian bits (bhaji and samosa x2)
Flour
Sugar

One bag of shopping from Aldi. This is also a bit of fun/tongue-in-cheek to help me get over handing over the money when it came time to pay and my daughter needed to unfurl my iron-like grip from my card and put it in the card machine for me while I stood there wondering when are my kids gonna get a job at the ages of 8,9, and 14 and buy me food instead and leave my money alone.

Alas, here I am! So...how much!? Have a guess!

(I didn't get a receipt. Daughter was too busy guiding me out of the store through my veil of tears and catatonic state. I might actually just be a tight-wod!?) Hubby works full-time, I work full-time.

Anyway!

How much!?

(Stffu, Aldi! Stffuuuuuu! hisses)

Just thinking... any chance DD snuck something in and you've not had receipt so don't know?
Looking at you dc at 4 who dropped in a lego set which sainsbo had for an insane amount of money for such a small thing!

TeenyDancer · 03/07/2022 08:06

That does seem a lot!

Can you go on Aldi website and find the exact items and total it up?

Not read the thread yet because spoilers but this is my guess

Small tray of beef pieces - £4
Jar of mango chutney £1
2 onions £0.30
Bag of wonky peppers £1
3 packets of microwave rice £0.50 x 3
Small, plastic container £1?
Cheap drinks bottle £0.60
Tin of mixed fruits £1
2 Naan Bread's £1
Garlic bread £1
Small tray of Indian bits (bhaji and samosa x2) £2
Flour £1
Sugar £1
Garlic clove £0.40
3 yoghurts £0.50 x 3
Bread £1
Small pack of ham £2
Butter £2.50

So £23.80 is my guess!

this is pretty much exactly the numbers I used when totting it up to £24 mentally. 👍

I shop at Aldi amongst other places so am familiar with pricing. I cannot possibly fathom how the OP was charged £45.

ThreeRingCircus · 03/07/2022 08:23

I really think you've been overcharged but it's difficult for you to know for sure without the receipt but for comparison I've dug out my receipt from Aldi for a shop I did on Monday:

2 x frozen pizzas
2 x bottles of milk
Garlic
Squeezy ginger paste
3 onions
Broccoli
Coriander
3 peppers
Pears
Cucumber
2 x halloumi
Roasted peanuts
Bag of spinach
Box of shredded wheat style cereal
Blueberries
Mini sausage rolls
Mini pork pies
Pack of ham
Baby wipes
Grated cheddar
Sliced Edam
Cherry tomatoes
Coleslaw
Mini savoury eggs
Roasted veg cous cous
Bananas
6 eggs
Pack of doughnuts
Toilet tissue

Came to £45.43

LadyCatStark · 03/07/2022 08:42

I guessed £24 so £45 definitely sounds expensive to me!

usernamealreadytaken · 03/07/2022 08:46

So, today I'm going to be that mumsnetter - went on the app and priced it for you, excluding the tub and bottle - you either bought premium everything, weren't in Aldi, the tub/bottle cost nearly £30, or there was a mistake -

Small tray of beef pieces 2.99
Jar of mango chutney 1.19
2 packs onions 98p
Bag of wonky peppers 1.16
3 packets of microwave rice 2.37
Small, plastic container
Cheap drinks bottle
Tin of mixed fruits 79p
2 Naan Bread's 59p
Garlic bread 32p
Small tray of Indian bits (bhaji and samosa x2) 1.09
Flour 55p
Sugar 65p
Garlic clove 79p pack of 4
3 yoghurts 1.05
Bread 65p
Small pack of ham 79p
Butter 1.75
17.71

PeanuttyButter · 03/07/2022 08:47

I went to Lidl the other day for some bits and pieces and it was better than I expected. I got

Gluten free Old el paso fajita kit
10 chicken sausages
2 ultimate burgers
Fresh potato croquettes
A kilo of potato salad
A jar of easy garlic
4 brioche buns
3 tubs of fake pringles
some jelly beans
A litre of pure orange juice
Colgate toothpaste

£19.84 it cost. Bargain!!

dottiedodah · 03/07/2022 08:52

Prices have gone up .There is only so much the SM can do before they stop making any profit! Maybe re check the receipt though .I shop in SB and they are not a lot different in price with their own brands.I always take a list ,stick to it and jot down the prices on the back of it going round .No nasty shocks then!

prepared101 · 03/07/2022 08:55

I did a full weeks shopping from Aldi yesterday including lots of fruit and veg, some toiletries and cleaning bits- was £70. The same shop in Tesco has been costing me £100+ so yes, prices are going up but Aldi still a lot cheaper!

BlancmanegeBunny · 03/07/2022 09:14

All the op needed to do was go on the Aldi click and collect website and check how much her shopping should have cost. I wonder why she hasn't?

KeepYaHeadUp · 03/07/2022 09:28

My shop in Aldi always used to come to around £60 whatever I bought. It was the Aldi paradox. But we tend to hit £80/90 now, so while the £45 is surprising for what you listed, it feels about right b

Not sure. Or why she's ignored those who have done that and shared the price they came upon with, which when I did it was under £20 for the food.

Somethingneedstochange · 03/07/2022 11:59

I always check mine before I leave. I thought I had misheard when she said how much. Checked receipt at home was charged £35 for a barbell set. Had no clue what it was googled it was a set of weights.😂😂😂I hadn't made any big purchase's off the middle isle or anything only food.

I'm sure the manager was suspicious of me though. Used to follow me when I went in after that. I've never stole anything in my life apart from the odd pick and mix as a child. So I stopped going until they opened the new bigger one and got a new manager.

Somethingneedstochange · 03/07/2022 12:08

Definitely is I do the odd online shop. I don't drive so delivery is cheaper than a taxi. I try to cut back and spend no more than £40. But it creeps up to £50/£60. There's nothing I can cut back on. It's all essentials that we need. What we eat affects my daughter's health condition. She needs a good variety of food in her diet. Luckily she's a healthy eater and loves home cooked meals.

Somethingneedstochange · 03/07/2022 12:46

I was replying to a comment from someone else further back on a list they put up. Not the OP, not sure why it's come up here.

threatmatrix · 03/07/2022 17:51

All the meat you buy from Asda is Halal now it’s owned by Muslims.

Lullab · 03/07/2022 18:04

£32

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 03/07/2022 18:13

£23. You don't say what type of drinks bottle or plastic container, or weight of the beef pieces. So it's not easy to judge.

Even the pork? Remarkable.

Maytodecember · 03/07/2022 18:18

£22.50

Fizzydog · 03/07/2022 18:19

£35...? Prices have changed. Aldi is still good value so we do bulk there but for us Sainsers is cheaper than Asda for the rest.

LoisLane66 · 03/07/2022 18:20

The OP isn't giving weights or packet sizes so we can't give opinions.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/07/2022 18:21

I was going to say about £40 but have seen your figure of £45

The meat tray - was that already chopped as that costs more

Also a tray of pre prepared “Indian bits” can be quite expensive

Others have already mentioned the drinks bottle and container

I agree of course though that food prices have gone up an incredible amount

Pixie2015 · 03/07/2022 18:29

£23 - without looking at rest - but I normally have no idea
