Cinema stopping kids in suits from coming in - Minions

jackstini · 02/07/2022 16:48

DS & his friend (both 13) had tickets this pm for Minions, Rise of Gru

Like lots of people per TikTok, they dressed up in suits/ties - just for fun
Got to cinema and were told they couldn't come in because of what they were wearing

DS called me upset and DH went down to see if he could sort it. Found 5 grown men standing over them and a few other kids, shouting at them that they needed to leave and they were not allowed in. Kids felt very intimidated

No dress code visible in the cinema or on the website

DH asked if they had misbehaved and was told no, we just don't like this suit thing as some of the people on TikTok have kicked off
DH pointed out, they hadn't kicked off, just wanted to watch the film, so what was the problem. Stoney silence
He took them outside, took their jackets & ties off & they went back in 5 minutes later and were admitted by a different member of staff

Is it just me or is this ridiculous? And pathetic for them to treat kids like that

I really want to complain but wanted the MN population to vote on if you think they were BU or not

YANBU - cinema staff were out of order & I should complain
YABU - don't complain

The fact you even compare it to Facebook shows how completely naive you are. It's Facebook on steroids with extra glitter and malevolence.

It has been proven that Facebook is a media weapon infiltrated by Russia, Iran, and doubtless others and deployed against Western targets. It has been found to have had an identifiable and signifivant influence on global referendums, elections and lawmakers. It harvests our data for the most nefarious purposes possible. It is the source of untold levels of fraud, deception and cyber-crime. How am I being naive?

Bramshott · 05/07/2022 15:44

If the cinemas were sensible they'd lay on special late night showings for the besuited teens (most of whom hopefully are NOT throwing anything and just enjoying the film) and double their money!

Goldenbear · 05/07/2022 15:47

All the references to 'little shits', 'Dickheads', we get it, so edgy and bold!

The amount of times little DC ruin the cinema experience doesn't lead to all under 8s being banned and rightly so!

Read it again. Take all the shit of Facebook and multiply it by ten AND target it at teenagers. Consider Facebook the prototype.

You're not wrong about Facebook. You're wrong to underestimate how much worse TikTok is, not least because it's like a giant social experiment on our teens. It specifically targets them.

Really really hope I never become one of those middle aged people who hates everything they don't understand.

are you pressing the three little dots at the bottom of the post you want to reply to? If you do there’s a ‘quote’ option and that should do it.

*disclaimer - MN occasionally doesn’t work properly for some stuff. You can report it on the site stuff board Smile

Goldenbear · 05/07/2022 15:52

Yes, I agree Bramshott, they would prefer that anyway than being with little kids. I saw the first Harry Potter film at 20 at a 11pm viewing, I fell to sleep as isn't my thing but still.

Cornettoninja · 05/07/2022 15:54

it’s not meant to be edgy, certainly not in my case. It’s a succinct description of what I want to convey.

nobody is making you use the same language and you don’t have the right to police others language either.

Start a forum of your own then you would be perfectly within your rights to ban any kind of language you like…. Just like private businesses can ban any undesirable behaviours they like.

Goldenbear · 05/07/2022 15:59

I agree Hoolihan, there is nothing that ages people more.

I am well aware of stuff my son gets up to that isn't great, I live with him and I was a teenager in the 90s so it is not that long ago that I have forgotten what teens get up to but like a PP he would not vandalise stuff or be horrible to little children and I know that for sure, he has a little sister and all his friends went up to her see of she was ok when crying at the year 7 taster day. They are popular boys as well, probably the type some on here would assume were tear aways as they dare to laugh in public!

Goldenbear · 05/07/2022 16:03

I'm not policing any language and I swear myself but I'm just pointing out it doesn't make you appear those things which is usually why people use it to describe children on this forum, one of been on since 2006 so no thanks I won't going anywhere!

Cornettoninja · 05/07/2022 16:10

….or they’re just describing dickhead behaviour and it’s quicker than typing stupid and contemptible behaviour 🤷‍♀️

beautyisthefaceisee · 05/07/2022 16:12

It's in the BBC news ffs!

xogossipgirlxo · 05/07/2022 16:21

Do you really believe that your 13 years old son was interested in Minions? Of course he picked up that tik tok challenge. You should be more aware of what your son is doing online.

Such a shame and shows how backwards society is. 40 years ago going to see the pictures was a special occasion. People wore their Sunday best for it and there was never any issues caused by that.
people are off their heads if they’re offended by a good old suit and tie. Think everyone should start dressing with a bit more class

Talk about missing the point spectacularly.

No one is 'offended' by the suit.

It isn't even about the suit, it is about a group, identifiable by the uniform they choose to wear, causing trouble.

Historically, if you choose to wear a uniform to align and identify yourself with others, it is then expected you behave like those others - you can't then complain that people have expected you to behave like that!

Facebook and TikTok are not remotely comparable. And on the contrary, the reason I hate TikTok is that I do understand it, to an extent. Working on some new methodologies right now. The algorithm is of course a trade secret, but I'd wager I understand at well as anyone who didn't design it.

I don't know much but I do know my subject.

My 15 year old son had already asked to go and see the minion film long before it came out. He has ASD and minions was a special interest when he was younger. He genuinely loves them.

What this trend did, was enable him to go and watch it and not feel like a loser for having enjoyment in something society like you thinks he shouldn't.

Don't assume you know what you're talking about. You probably don't.

Ffs! My 17, 15 and 14 yo DC went to see it. They didn't wear suits, they didn't fling stuff at the screen, they didn't cause havoc, but they did go and see a funny film which they enjoyed.

Mine did too. 18, 16, 13 and 11.

They all enjoyed it.

People are so weird

Your welcome @FlamencoDance . you’re not the first to be confused by the quote/reply thing. Smile

I’m not sure if the ‘reply’ thing even does anything! It might send an email/private message alert to the poster that you’ve replied to them maybe?

@iloveeverykindofcat Yep. I hate it for the same reasons, having trained and worked with both teenagers AND in digital marketing.

Parents may comfort themselves thinking that they're cool cats and anyone raising concerns is a Victor Meldrew. I'm a gamer / tech savvy / knowledgeable about child and adolescent psychology. We're certainly not a low tech household but I can tell you the one thing that is totally banned in our house is TikTok. I really wish more parents would ask some questions about TikTok.

Yeh you're right. People on Facebook don't even know they're being manipulated.

Minions is a kids film. Why do loads of teenage boys suddenly want to go and see it unless it's to cause trouble?

And chinny reckon that it's just a coincidence they picked that film while they happen to be wearing suits @Daisypod

It’s not a kids film any more than many other Pixar/Disney films are kids films!
Plenty of animated films are designed with an older audience also in mind. There are part of DM1 that I genuinely laughed at, even if we were watching it for the kids.

Who are you to police what people (teenagers I.e. children) watch.

Quincythequince · 05/07/2022 17:25

And my son and his friends went on Friday, in suits as it’s a ‘thing’ to do right now, and there were no issues in the theatres at all.

Stop hating on teenage boys so much.
