Cinema stopping kids in suits from coming in - Minions

jackstini · 02/07/2022 16:48

DS & his friend (both 13) had tickets this pm for Minions, Rise of Gru

Like lots of people per TikTok, they dressed up in suits/ties - just for fun
Got to cinema and were told they couldn't come in because of what they were wearing

DS called me upset and DH went down to see if he could sort it. Found 5 grown men standing over them and a few other kids, shouting at them that they needed to leave and they were not allowed in. Kids felt very intimidated

No dress code visible in the cinema or on the website

DH asked if they had misbehaved and was told no, we just don't like this suit thing as some of the people on TikTok have kicked off
DH pointed out, they hadn't kicked off, just wanted to watch the film, so what was the problem. Stoney silence
He took them outside, took their jackets & ties off & they went back in 5 minutes later and were admitted by a different member of staff

Is it just me or is this ridiculous? And pathetic for them to treat kids like that

I really want to complain but wanted the MN population to vote on if you think they were BU or not

YANBU - cinema staff were out of order & I should complain
YABU - don't complain

*wouldn't be stupid and dress up with all his mates knowing that other teens had been doing the same and causing trouble though

Cas112 · 05/07/2022 15:15

This has drove you all insane.

We all know teenagers can be little shits. Even the ones who's parents seem to think they are perfect.

Its funny how many are trying to justify going the cinema in a suit, its not normal but you all don't need to get your back up over it. Teenagers have followed stupid trends from the beginning of time. You dont need to take it so personal if a cinema doesn't let them in. Its protecting a business and other customers from getting irritated. Get over it, the teens will soon be onto the next nuisance trend, still being wind ups, even the 'law abiding teens' that went to the cinema in suit for a trend they have no idea about 👀😂

ginghamstarfish · 05/07/2022 15:20

What pathetic spoilt mindless brats they must be, to be able to buy and then forfeit a cinema ticket, while wearing a suit, just so they can cause trouble and follow a stupid 'trend'. Their parents must be so proud. Perhaps they should be taught how that money could help people who are starving, ill, neglected. I despair at the mindless and self-indulgent state of teenagers these days.

Such a shame and shows how backwards society is. 40 years ago going to see the pictures was a special occasion. People wore their Sunday best for it and there was never any issues caused by that.
people are off their heads if they’re offended by a good old suit and tie. Think everyone should start dressing with a bit more class

40 years ago I was 8 and went to the cinema to watch things like E.T. and Annie. We just wore normal everyday clothes and the only people who called it "the pictures" were my grandparents' generation. It was a treat, yes, but not a special occasion.

PoshSpice2 · 05/07/2022 15:23

Why are you assuming they’re there to cause trouble!
there is nothing wrong with PAYING to go to the pictures. And last time I checked there is no dress code at these places.
Let them wear what they bloody like I’d much rather see them in smart suits than in shell suits, which seems to be the norm for some of you

I don't think it is cool to refer to kids as Dickheads.

Oh, so if there are adult dickheads and we are admitting that not everyone one is the same, surely it is better to deal with individuals when they have actually done something to warrant action rather than referencing our personal bias and banning people between the ages of 13 -19 as they 'may' do something seen as they are in fancy dress and we all know that is a crime!

I’m not following your argument at all. Groups of adults are denied entry to all sorts of venues based on their attire being popular amongst groups of dickheads. Football shirts, trainers, jeans, certain designer labels - all articles of clothing it’s not uncommon to come across entry restrictions over in adult venues.

The numbers are enough that no, it isn’t best to deal with everyone on an individual basis because it’s simply not practical and there is enough evidence that statistically you’re going to come across trouble and you have a reasonable opportunity to reduce loss of income or harm to your staff by just banning them. Plus why should staff be held responsible for their judge of character if it all goes tits up? I wouldn’t make that call for a minimum wage/possibly slightly above job.

arguing against or ignoring a ban is comment enough on someone’s character to refuse entry to a private business on that basis alone tbh.

PoshSpice2 · 05/07/2022 15:25

what about the Mod subculture from back in the 80s? No one had an issue with them wearing suits for casual social events.

I really can't tell if this is a wind up but no, 40 years ago people did not wear their 'Sunday best' to go to 'the pictures'. You know 40 years ago was the 1980s, right? Not the 1940s.

I swear Tik Tok is one of the worst things ever invented

As a sociologist of online culture, TikTok is literally the worst mainstream app in existence. Its absolutely sinister. And I'm the last person to say 'keep kids off the internet'.

This 100%. It drives me mad how many people underestimate how truly harmful and frankly malevolent it is.

Chinese app ... spreads misinformation and division... encourages intergenerational conflict ... encourages children to basically act against their own interests in mass acts of disrespect and harm.

Do you think China allows their own teenagers to use TikTok? Do they fuck! They tell them to go do more maths practice while our teenagers become online addicts / narcissists / perpetual victims. I wish it was blocked. I have friends who are teachers who were being filmed and videos shared on tiktok. People really don't understand how impulsive teenagers can be and how swayed they are by peer pressure.

Huh? I think you’ll find that there were lots of social issues with the mods (and rockers) www.rs21.org.uk/2020/03/20/mods-and-rockers-the-1960s-youth-cult/

Wait til you hear about FACEBOOK! You won't believe it.

Goldenbear · 05/07/2022 15:30

Why is it stupid, lots of teens have dressed up with no problems, you are just reading about the ones that have as that's what sells advertising space on news websites!

Oh no! You don’t think I’m cool 😢

It is a trend. That means lots of teens are doing it. Too many to manage on an individual basis. Teens can go and watch the film if they love the minions so much. Just not in a suit.

Let's send them all to BORSTAL.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that, @Hoolihan - but is it really that unreasonable to want a cinema visit not to be completely spoiled by misbehaving teenagers? And is it unreasonable for cinemas to be pissed off at having to clear up the huge mess some of these kids are making, and at having to issue refunds to other cinema goers whose visit has been completely spoiled by the bad behaviour?

Going to the cinema is an expensive treat, and I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect that, if I’ve shelled out ££ for a ticket, I should be able to enjoy the film without major disruption or bad behaviour by other attendees.

SD1978 · 05/07/2022 15:34

The current trend on tik tok isn't just dressing up in suits- it's also being disruptive, and ruining the movie for other people attending. This is why they are banning young guys from attending. If they hadn't tried ti follow a trend and had juts gone to watch it, they wouldn't have been stopped. The cinema has the right of refusal and many peoples trip to the cinema has been ruined by kids also joining in this stupid trend.

Well if they start wearing shell suits it will because of another stupid TicTok trend

Hoolihan · 05/07/2022 15:34

No it's not unreasonable but the quoted post and many many others on this frankly mind-boggling thread are massive overreactions.
