To be pleased that Steve Wright is leaving the Radio 2 afternoon show?

I have felt for a long time that Steve Wright has gone past his sell by date and was so pleased to hear that his show is finishing at long last. His Friday afternoon show of ‘jockin’ with no G is beyond tedious.

@Pottedpalm Simon Mayo does the drivetime show on Greatest Hits radio now from about 4pm, so you can still catch him on there. Apart from the confessions, it seems to be a carbon copy of his radio 2 show.

I am made up Steve shite is going, but gutted that it's Scott Mills. Hate it when he fills in for Ken Bruce. Hes so flat.

Billysboy - radio stations are currently trying to get more female voices on the air so you're out of luck there I'm afraid

Am actually sorry, quite liked the tongue in cheek retro-ness of the show..... Can't listen to ZB and her state of permanently over excited puppy. Love the ageless Jo Wiley. Vanessa is a pretty cool stand in for when JW's away......

I like Ken Bruce but he does play some absolutely dire music.

I think it'd the producers who choose. Plus the playlist is set from on high

Terry wogan at breakfast
Ken Bruce and Popmaster
Amol Rajan taking JV show with (Terry allotment slot but no Sarah Clacky Jarvis )
Gary Davies in the afternoon
Simon Mayo taking drivetime
Pete Tong then taking over from 7
Sally to do the traffic so no Anderson anywhere

The 'serious jocking' phrase cuts through me like a knife, have to turn off immediately if I hear it or think it is coming. Sorry to hear he'll still be on air, will probably avoid R6 to be safe.

I would welcome more female presenters , not a fan of Vanessa but like Sarah Cox and Lauren Laverne on desert Island discs , Annie Mac and Jo Whiley

Zoe Ball and Claudia I find a bit to shouty and needy on the radio

quite happily listen to Desert Island discs at 12 before lunchtime show

I like steve wright and ken Bruce. Also loved Terry wogan. I find some of the younger presenters really hard to listen to.

Scott Mills is hilarious. His show on Radio one with Chris Stark is excellent, so is his podcast.

He's shit, but it means he won't be covering for Ken Bruce any more so my Popmaster enjoyment won't be diluted. Bloke has absolutely no craic and does this effeminate (not that there's anything wrong with that) laugh when he's uncomfortable talking to people - which is way, way too often for a professional broadcaster.

I like a bit of Mills and still hearing SW around made me feel even older than I am so I'm pleased. The massive 'genius broadcaster' tributes are slightly surprising but thinking about it he sounded as if he were in exactly the same mood for 40 years which clearly can't be the case so maybe that's what they mean.

Tbh I wish they would very gently retire Paul O'Grady but he sounds so ill that perhaps it would be cruel.

I don't understand why the BBC clings to the same DJs / presenters for YEARS, it's ridiculous! No other job would you be there that long.. let the new talent in! Some of theses guys, Steve included imo have sounded dated for at least a decade. They aren't gods!

No, I don’t get it either! Just why is there no G and why is that supposed to be funny?? It’s not funny, it’s cringey and a bit weird and I don’t really understand why it’s gone on for so long 🤔

I just wish R2 would stop the never ending reading out of where people are travelling to and from that they do on every bloody show. I don’t give a fuck that Dave and Sarah are driving from Reading to Peterborough for a family party and neither does anyone else apart from Dave and Sarah.

The no G thing was just weird , although the listeners seemed to like joining in , but it did tend to repeat itself every week.
He also liked singing over the end of the songs which is annoying , maybe once is funny , but he did this a lot.
The only thing I liked was the listener choice songs as they tended to be a bit different

I think I get the travelling bit... I occasionally find it comforting when the news is full of tragedy and weirdness to be hearing about Dave and Sarah who've been married for decades and for whom travelling from Reading to Peterborough is a huge peak of upheaval in their lives. No doubt in reality Dave and Sarah have just as much heartache as anyone else but on R2 it all sounds stable and reassuring.
