Animals are struggling too, thanks to humans wantonly overpopulating this poor burning planet.

I'd rather save one elephant than 100 humans with my bequests.

Totally agree. Humans are destroying so many animals' habitats.

Each to their own but I prefer to leave my money to animal charities

MrsClatterbuck · 01/07/2022 10:56

Local hospice, RNLI and CAP

Same. I’d lie on my deathbed wrapped in Hermes scarves.

And bathe in Bolly, using the scarves to dry your hands so you could read your diamond encrusted kindle in the tub!

Agree. So many awful humans. Animals are more worthy of my help than most humans.

DeepDown12 · 01/07/2022 12:44

If I didn't have a child of my own and close family - everything would go to my best friend's child.

Rewis · 01/07/2022 12:58

Spend it. If there is something left then I'd give some to my 2 hobby groups (assuming I'd die now while I'm an active member), godchildren and donate to charity that supports low income families. Also would quite like to give something for my friends so they could have a party.

Misanthropy is disordered thinking.

Obviously animals are deserving of help, but factually the majority of humans are decent.

Maybe we have different standards of what ‘decent’ is. Maybe I just prefer animals. 😉

If there was no-one that I got on with - a friend, a neighbour, a colleague - then my community council to pay for nice extras in my local area or to distribute to local groups like the Scouts.

Blurp · 01/07/2022 13:20

Part of me would love to leave it to someone totally random - like, on the third anniversary of my death, someone is to the stand on a particular street corner at 1pm and give it to the 17th person who passes by. Just for the sheer joy I would have if someone gave me money in that way!

In reality, I'd probably spend a fair bit while I was alive, shopping locally and buying green etc, because I think that's a good way to pass it on to the next generation; I'd also be one of those old ladies who shakes your hand and leaves a tenner in it.

If there were particular people who'd stood out to me in life, I'd leave them some as a surprise. And then I'd leave the rest to charity, I think.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 01/07/2022 13:23

The problem with giving it to councils/charities that help people is that the money always seems to get wasted eg a local man left £120k+ for a footpath only
bridge to be put over our canal. It took 10 years and £90k of that money before the plans were even drawn up, then locals had to fight tooth and nail to get the bridge done with yet more fundraising. I can’t believe that £90k is what it took to draw up plans. The landowners had already given permission as had the council and highways for works to be done BEFORE the donor had even died.
Yes this happens with all charities even animal ones. But seems to happen a lot less with smaller local animal rescues. Maybe they are so desperate, they literally do just spend the money on immediate needs - food, shelter and things like electric bills. No need for a committee to convene a committee to vote on a project manager?…

Tootsey11 · 01/07/2022 13:30

Animal charities for me. None of my money will ever go to help humans.

iwanttobeasquare · 30/06/2022 13:54

My local hospital I think.

Isn't there something which rules that every bequest a hospital or the NHS get, then it's taken out of their funding. So they don't end up with anymore. Or did I imagine that?

Bearsan · 01/07/2022 13:53

Two of my best friends, the other three are pretty much loaded/sorted.
A lump sum to local animal shelter.

speakout · 01/07/2022 13:58

I'd spend it.
My neighbour is a single man in his 70s, never married, no relatives.
He lives a good life. His mortgage was paid off, and although he has a good workplace pension he did a maximum equity release on his property- so he is spending his estate before he dies.

Blueberrywitch · 01/07/2022 14:03

I would start volunteering for a charity that does frontline support for refugees or single mothers, then identify some particular clients that I want to support - and leave my money to them. You could change the whole trajectory of a family that way and it’s lovely and direct. Maybe they’ll name a child after you too (depending on the level of inheritance lol!).

I love this. The other thing you could do is just start leaving MASSIVE cash tips wherever you go. Always give buskers £50 notes etc :)

CoalCraft · 01/07/2022 14:06

Perhaps the children of close friends if applicable, otherwise a charity.

My local hospice, or some other local charity/good cause/animal rescue.

Sceptre86 · 01/07/2022 14:12

I'd sell it all and spend it whilst I was alive. Assuming I didn't need care when older the house would go to Manchester children's hospital for caring for my dd when she was ill.

GarethKeenan · 01/07/2022 18:20

If I knew my death was imminent? Someone who doesn't know me. I'd scour social media, find a worthy person whose life would be changed by becoming my beneficiary and die a little more at peace

BeaLola · 01/07/2022 18:35

I do have a DH and DS and have experience of being an Executor of a will of £1 million left to 2charities - and they were awful to deal with.

If my DH and DS had died I would leave specific amounts to Dear Friends with the wish that they enjoyed the money and specific small charities like my local hospice, like the still birth room at local hospital , like local charity who does heart tests of sporty teenagers etc

YouAreNotBatman · 01/07/2022 18:38

Dancingwithhyenas · 30/06/2022 19:21

I’d leave it in trust to be used to help pupils of a local school who need it and Home for Good (Charity to encourage fostering & adoption)

Can’t imagine leaving money to animals when so many people are struggling.

For some of us animals have brought much joy and are/ have been dear friends and family.
Or been a great support.
Or all around just have had good experiences with animals.

And perhaps same can’t be said about people.
Just a thought.
