To think chihuahuas are the best dog?

I have never been a lover of small dogs, always imagined myself with a Labrador or two. However, after doing some (lots) of research we thought chihuahuas would be the best fit for our family as first time dog owners. So we brought 2 home six months ago (different litters).

I had the puppy blues for a couple of weeks, really thought I'd made a mistake but as the time has went on I've grown to love them so so much. They are the easiest dogs ever, don't require too much walking, walk great on the lead, lovely temperaments, not destructive, sleep a lot, sleep through the night, excellent recall, easy to obedience train, good with the cats and children, the only complaint is they are very hard to toilet train.

I have been treating them like dogs rather than accessories. I love that if there's a day I can't take them their walk they have a massive garden to run about in and play with each other and we do loads of brain games. I am really enjoying being a dog owner and never expected it this much.

I now could never see myself having a big dog, the only downside is I would love to walk them longer and further.

AIBU to think small dogs are easier and less messy than big dogs? Which do you prefer and why?

Nonsense. What you need is retrievers and retriever/lab crosses ♥️

Never thought I liked chihuahuas but my friend adopted one and he is adorable.

Huge dog lover 👋 do not like chihuahuas. They are so unappealing! They look like they will bite your hand off in a piranha esque frenzy. Those bulbous eyes. The yapping 🤦🏻‍♀️ To me they aren’t a ‘proper’ dog. Something a Barbara Cartland type might carry in her handbag but not a dog to take on adventures (like my own two wonderful doggos). Nope, not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

GSD for me, but I grew up with one so I'm biased!
We also had a red setter but as my dad put it "you either have one and then have them for life, or never have another"

Some beautiful dogs on this thread.

DD wanted a dog and after only ever having working dogs I was reticent about pugs, chihuahuas etc.

A friend had two chihuahua and bred them and we asked if we could have one and ended up with two brothers. Absolutely amazing little boys.

They have all the personality of a big dog, don't realise they are little and just seem to be a big dog shrunk down.

They don't eat a lot, a poo is smaller than my little finger. Were easy to train although if you ever leave anything plastic on the floor they will wee on it.

Incredibly alert and intelligent. Smell like gingerbread when they are waking up from a nap. (Which they do a lot of) play fetch with the tiniest ping pong ball size tennis ball and are all round smashers.

One is a bit yappy but only when he senses a visitor or intruder and I don't mind him barking to let me know someone is approaching the house.

One is round head and one deer head.

Depends on the dog it's not about the breed. There are a lot of chihuahuas that are nightmares. I'm glad you were lucky

Each to their own. I love Border Collies myself. We said goodbye to our old girl in January and she was loving, faithful, intelligent and very pretty. I miss her every day.....

I’ve never known a nice chihuahua. I find them snappy and unpredictable and I can’t imagine they have much loyalty in them.

much prefer big dogs with personality

Chihuahuas are among the most loyal of breeds!

Are they? I’ll stand corrected then but still wouldn’t have one personally.

I have a chihuahua cross Yorkie and probably some other small dog thrown into the mix. He's amazing and I wasnt a fan of small yappy dogs (grew up with an old English.) However, he is so clever knows loads of words was so easy to toilet train and barks at all the cats coming into the garden so I have far less cat shit in my flowers which is a bonus. He barks like a banshee when someone comes into the house but soon settles down when told and a treat is given. He's a definite little pack dog as he hates it when we are out for a walk and someone wanders off always has his eye on where they've gone and wants them to come back. He's a strong personality for sure. He's treated as a dog so no carrying anywhere and loves a nice long walk. Here he is

I did tons of research and finally settled for a whippet as family dog. How I wish I got a smaller breed!
He is really naughty, destroyed the couch and jumps everywhere. His head reaches tables perfectly and steals food, believe me I am trying to train him out of this but is so much work!
I wish he was smaller so we could use stair gates, etc.

i wonder how they measure that? (Genuine curiosity!)
