To think chihuahuas are the best dog?

I have never been a lover of small dogs, always imagined myself with a Labrador or two. However, after doing some (lots) of research we thought chihuahuas would be the best fit for our family as first time dog owners. So we brought 2 home six months ago (different litters).

I had the puppy blues for a couple of weeks, really thought I'd made a mistake but as the time has went on I've grown to love them so so much. They are the easiest dogs ever, don't require too much walking, walk great on the lead, lovely temperaments, not destructive, sleep a lot, sleep through the night, excellent recall, easy to obedience train, good with the cats and children, the only complaint is they are very hard to toilet train.

I have been treating them like dogs rather than accessories. I love that if there's a day I can't take them their walk they have a massive garden to run about in and play with each other and we do loads of brain games. I am really enjoying being a dog owner and never expected it this much.

I now could never see myself having a big dog, the only downside is I would love to walk them longer and further.

AIBU to think small dogs are easier and less messy than big dogs? Which do you prefer and why?

Every time I see a brachycephalic breed all I feel is sorry for them with their squished deformed faces, excess skin folds and prominent eyes and all the problems that go with that, I don't understand how anyone can find them attractive.

Same. I hope no one breeds from them anymore so they can just die out.. but they make people money so it will never stop.

I feel the same about my JRT and they aren't dissimilar in many ways. It wasn't actually a breed if considered initially but when my old boss was breeding her dog I was tempted however it wasn't the right time. ( I work term time so wanted to try and get a puppy as close to start of summer holidays as possible) but then covid hit and closed the schools just a couple of weeks before puppies were ready to go to homes and it just so happened boss had one left as her friend had the pick of 2 and didn't want to decide til she'd seen them in person (couldn't do an extra trip for that did to covid restrictions). So many benefits to a small dog and she's hardy, healthy, extremely loyal, trainable, can walk for miles on end but refuses to do more than go out for a pee under the shelter of the guttering in the rain and damp cold and does not suffer from the lack of exercise in the short term like a bigger dog might. Also cheap to feed and inside with the rising cost of living and poos are inoffensive to pick up 😆. Glad you're enjoying your pups 🐶

I'm the same. Hideously ugly, major health problems and usually very badly bred. All that slobber, and the farts are just vile (a friend has three frenchies so I have experience of the stench and I know how often they are at vets).

We have a cat too. The cat is bigger than my white one.

They get on well

My brown one likes to chase said cat and cat doesn’t like her at all

I have a miniature shihtzu and he is also super easy and chilled. He can be exercised at home or taken on short walks. He is doing super well with puppy class and is generally easy compared to bigger dogs we’ve had in the past. He has a couple of stubborn shihtzu quirks but honestly he is the best little pup ever!
little dogs for the win!

I love my chi! Had him for 10 years this year, not yappy but he does give DH a good telling off! 🤣 never bit anyone either and loves the kids.

Doesn't cause any mess occasional bit of shedding but nothing bad.

Hallyup89 · 29/06/2022 18:34

I'm not sure chihuahuas actually come under the category of 'dog'. Plenty of other categories I can think of though....

Scienceteacher1986 · 29/06/2022 18:36

Christ no yabu op.

Bigger dogs are way better. Labradors best

This should have been a lighthearted thread. It is sad how people have to be so unpleasant - if you don’t like a breed for whatever reason fine, but no need to be so aggressive and unpleasant about it. It’s like people can’t help themselves - they can’t just state their opinion, they have to be rude and unpleasant with it.

We just got a chihuahua cross and all I have done for two weeks is pick up poo and clean up wee ! Omg I’ve always had dogs but never had this much problem toilet training ☹️ She just goes whenever and wherever she wants it’s exhausting.

Hellocatshome · 29/06/2022 18:44

My favourite size of dog is whatever size the dog I'm currently stroking is. There are good and bad points about all breeds and all sizes. Obviously my ddog is the bestest of them all though.

MissMaple82 · 29/06/2022 18:46

Chihuahuas are like angry rats. The thing is you've got nothing to compare it too as it's your first dog. I've had many dogs, and i know plenty Chihuahuas and I can't say it's a breed I'd ever get.

MissMaple82 · 29/06/2022 18:47

And, sorry but they are uuuugly!

I am sure the dogs don't mind being called that. How bizarre to take offence on behalf of them.

Wimblepeep · 29/06/2022 18:52

Completely agree. I have two. And like you I’ve trained them properly. The oldest (he’s now 11 and he’s my soul pupper!) is always getting people saying ‘I didn’t think I liked chihuahuas until I met yours.’

Chis have a load of personality and they are very affectionate. They tend to imprint onto one person and then they guard them with everything. They have zero concept of how small they are either. My oldest is the smartest dog I’ve come across (the younger one isn’t smart lol).

I genuinely couldn’t imagine myself with any other breed of dog now.

dhisaknob · 29/06/2022 18:52

I can't stand people that call chihuahuas rats you are all absolutely vile. Spend some time with one and tell me if you still think that!

Ours is v well bred. No prominent eyes or excess skin, and no problems with farts if they are fed properly.

I did. It yapped and yapped and then went for me. No thanks.
There are chi that go to my local park that just go after all dogs. Owner does not care.

If yours is well behaved, then great. A lot are not because people just let their shitty behaviour go because they are small and "harmless".
ALL dogs should be trained to the same standard. Picking one up because it is being a knob does not count as training.
