To think chihuahuas are the best dog?

I have never been a lover of small dogs, always imagined myself with a Labrador or two. However, after doing some (lots) of research we thought chihuahuas would be the best fit for our family as first time dog owners. So we brought 2 home six months ago (different litters).

I had the puppy blues for a couple of weeks, really thought I'd made a mistake but as the time has went on I've grown to love them so so much. They are the easiest dogs ever, don't require too much walking, walk great on the lead, lovely temperaments, not destructive, sleep a lot, sleep through the night, excellent recall, easy to obedience train, good with the cats and children, the only complaint is they are very hard to toilet train.

I have been treating them like dogs rather than accessories. I love that if there's a day I can't take them their walk they have a massive garden to run about in and play with each other and we do loads of brain games. I am really enjoying being a dog owner and never expected it this much.

I now could never see myself having a big dog, the only downside is I would love to walk them longer and further.

AIBU to think small dogs are easier and less messy than big dogs? Which do you prefer and why?

The best breed is the dog you have. 😍

I gravitate toward small/medium Nordic breeds, but there are so many wonderful dogs in the world.

Itwasntmeright · 29/06/2022 23:16

I can’t take them seriously, plus I’ve never met one that isn’t a yappy vicious little fucker. I’m aware that that’s the owners’ fault but I still can’t stand them. Sorry OP.

MinorWomensWhiplash1 · 29/06/2022 23:19

I’ve never met a chihuahua that wasn’t a total arsehole, sorry OP. And they’re ugly with their weird bulgy eyes.

incywincyspiders · 29/06/2022 21:08

@XenoBitch my dog does not go up to random dogs. She's always on a lead. Not sure why you are putting anxious in quotation marks and not sure why you have to be so unpleasant in general.

I am fed up with "friendly" dogs approaching mine. Is that such a bad thing
Where have I been unpleasant?

WhoKnowsProbsNotMe · 29/06/2022 23:29

It’s a border collie for me as much as they have endless energy my Rosie is the best dog I’ve ever had, she’s so easily trained and next level loyal.

Loves to play then cuddle up on the sofa and in bed (await the you’re a disgusting human for allowing your dog in the bed MN chat). If you are upset she notices before you do and comes for snuggles 🥰 and the vet or children (of any age) can do literally anything and she just stands there looking at me like “mum is this ok”😂.

She’s also in a strange way really good with puppy’s in a way I’ve never had with other dogs (German Shepard/Staffy)…she puts them in their place with an all talk no action attitude every time which somehow always seems to work without having the fear my dog might eat yours 😂

though I will say my friend has a chihuahua I dog sit and as much as she’s not overly clever/trained 😂 still a lovely wee dog for a cuddle…and you can’t grumble at that baby fax face 🦊

No one’s fur baby will ever match up to your own x

Absolutely. We all like different things, and different breeds of dog suit different people.
I'm lucky in that it so happens that I have actually, literally, the best dog ever. A beautiful golden retriever boy who is intelligent, affectionate, and obedient.
I'm not keen on chihuahuas, but to be fair I've never known one well. I just don't like yapping!

SoupDragon · 29/06/2022 23:37

of course chihuahuas yap - they can't help it because they have high pitched barks. 😂😂 Same for all small dogs.

For the chihuahua lovers in Yorkshire!

inmyslippers · 30/06/2022 22:13

Can't tell me that's not cute.

SoupDragon · 30/06/2022 23:20

I can! 😂

cuteness is in the eye of the beholder 🙂

I'll be honest, I never liked them. DD blindsided with me hers, asking for permission when I was drunk and promising me I could buy it a sombrero (I was very drunk).

She'd wanted one since she was three and have saved money for around two years, eventually asking me if she was allowed her own dog when she was two weeks shy of 18.

Now we have her the breed has grown on me. I'm 40 now and my big dog is a pup. I'll likely be 50+ once he is no longer with us so he will probably be my last "big" dog. I'd always thought a greyhound would be my "retirement" dog but I'd consider a chi now too.

the important question is, did you buy the dog a sombrero? 😁

Teder · 30/06/2022 23:41

XenoBitch · 29/06/2022 21:00

Your "anxious" chi should not be coming up to my dog and yapping to start with. Keep it under control.

I am sick of of strange dogs coming up to mine, yapping or whatever.. and the owner says "it is ok, they are just gobby" or some shit. I can understand that. My dog can not.

I recall my dog and put him on lead if I’m unsure about a dog approaching.
Where did that poster say her dog approaches other dogs like yours and yaps?

AgentMagenta · 30/06/2022 23:43

Yabu 😄 Chihuahuas are overgrown rats!

No, obviously breed is not the be all and end all, the individual dog's temperament is paramount. I generally prefer big dogs; labs, collies, Bernese mountain dogs... But my absolute favourite breed is a (fairly) small breed: King Charles cavalier spaniel. 🐶

Booklover3 · 01/07/2022 00:21

I’m sorry I’m not a fan :( but that’s only because my next door neighbour has one and all it does is bark. Barks when it’s happy. Barks when it’s sad. Barks when they go out and it’s anxious. It literally just barks. It drives me round the bend… whereas my own Lab literally only barks if she thinks there’s a threat of some kind in the garden… like a hedgehog or a fox. In fact she looks as put out as me when it’s been barking incessantly for ages. I feel sorry for the poor dog it can’t be happy and sounds very highly strung… but then I’m quite sure it hasn’t been properly trained.

sophiasnail · 01/07/2022 17:18

The very bestest breed is actually the toy poodle! (No of course I am not biased!) Our 3.5kg toy is exceptionally clever, will walk as far as any human, and much further than a lot of large breeds. He participates eagerly in Agility, Obedience and Hoopers and can be tucked under one arm when required. He is also very, very cute! He still manages to take up 3/4 of a double bed though....

Mimilamore · 01/07/2022 17:19

My daughter has a chihuahua who doesn't know he is.one, he runs about with his fellow dog and generally behaves like a bigger dog. He is very amenable too. I think it is how they are treated really, had he been put in a hand bag he might have been different!!

Therunecaster · 01/07/2022 17:28

Sausages and doodles get my vote!

Chihuahua’s are the devils minions come to earth. I’ve never met a nice one or one that’s even tolerable come to that

You should meet my little white one.

Honestly she is the softest and dopiest dog around and can be found on a school day, surrounded by children being fussed.

She is perfect around toddlers too because she doesn’t jump up at them. Just lays down and let’s them fuss her

Ludoole · 01/07/2022 17:52

They are lovely, but you can't beat a yorkshire terrier . Mine passed 2 months ago but never bit anyone and had the loveliest temperament I have ever seen in any one, dog or person.

TempNameChangexx · 01/07/2022 18:08

YABVU - a friend of a friend has two and they're the most annoying dogs I've come across. Small, yappy, annoying, jumping up all the time.
I'm not a dog hater - I love dogs, just not those ones.
There's a greyhound 2 doors away and a GSD a bit further down the road and they're absolutely great !!

DeadButDelicious · 01/07/2022 18:11

I like chihuahuas. Yours are very cute OP!

I have a rescue pug who in my opinion is just about perfect. Grin

All dogs are the best though really aren't they? Never met a dog I don't like. People however... well the less said about that the better.

Mine are both the same! Mine are deer headed so bigger than the usual chihuahua but still on the smaller dog side.

There is a bulldog we see everyday when we walk and a big mastiff type dog.

When they all spot each other it's so nice they literally stop and look at each other then run towards each other like mad. The mastiff type one is so gentle with my two. They chase each other and play it's really sweet.

HorseInTheHouse · 01/07/2022 20:24

Only one dog has ever frightened me and it was a chihuahua. Ran up to me snarling and snapping at my ankles.

I'm sure yours are very sweet and well brought up, OP, but they are definitely nowhere near the top of the breeds rankings for me. If I wanted something small I think I'd get a border terrier, a JRT, a cocker spaniel or a sheltie.

LidlMiddleLover · 01/07/2022 20:27

Worst breed IMO yappy snappy and ugly not really dogs at all
