This is why people ask for cash

I did some babysitting on Saturday night. When the couple got back they said sorry they didn't have any cash and they would transfer me the money. It is Tuesday and in spite of giving them my bank details, and a reminder text, still no payment.
If I ever babysit for them again (not sure I will now), I will say I will only do so if they pay cash that evening. Sadly this kind of way of operating seems common amongst middle-class people. It may not be a big deal for you to wait days for a relatively small sum of money, but it is for many others.

@MrsAvocet I have reminders set throughout the month to chase people, same people every bastarding month.

For certain jobs now, the rate they pay includes the time I spend monthly chasing them to bloody pay!

Magazines are an arse, they often pay the month AFTER publication, and will hound you to produce something right now, last minute, yesterday, on the double.. then sit on it for weeks and weeks..

There is no fighting the system though, thats the way it works, thats the way its always worked, thats the way it will continue to work and you either suck it up freelance-bitches or you do something else for a living.

expat101 · 30/06/2022 20:23

Have you sat for this couple before? I’m wondering if they have form for not paying.

ate you on the same community page? Might be worthwhile to see if they have regular posts asking for sitters and get a different one each time.

in the meanwhile call them and say you are coming around to collect your cash.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 30/06/2022 20:26

I can't see why asking for cash would make any difference, they probably would've drawn any out. I never have cash but would transfer the money straight away. I would've got them to do it there and then. What other details do they need that you couldn't just tell them?

Yanbu to want them to pay on the same day though.

Tigger1895 · 30/06/2022 20:26

Can you download the Revolut app, you might find they have it. It’ll show in your contact list on the site. Then you can request they send the money that way.

Dancingwithhyenas · 30/06/2022 20:26

We always do bank transfer/paypal whilst they are there because I live in fear of forgetting!

Tusue · 30/06/2022 20:31

I agree anyone who has the money to go out should have the money to pay for a reliable babysitter.Text them asap stating that you need the money. They are CF’s

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 30/06/2022 20:36

Paypal
free and you can easily transfer the £ straight into your bank account so you have access instantly

NannaKaren · 30/06/2022 20:37

They are cheeky barstewards - they don’t care ! I’d text and say please pay by bank transfer within the hour - you have been awaiting payment and need the money, thank you!
Do not babysit for them again !
people like this make me sick 😡

HoarHouse · 30/06/2022 20:44

set up a go fund me page and then when us stranger's have paid your wages that were their responsibility, you can show them what absolute arsehole's they are. I will certainly chip in. Do it, shame those nasty entitled, ,tight arseholes that it's not OK to make someone beg for money that is owed.

Backtoblack1 · 30/06/2022 21:14

I get this when tutoring! Did you get the money? X

Somethingneedstochange · 30/06/2022 21:35

Easy enough to do over paypal. Only needs your email address.

April90 · 30/06/2022 21:46

God some people just have no conscience or morals seriously. Get the money and don't babysit for them again is my advice x

Didsomeonesaydogs · 30/06/2022 21:48

Tell them if they don’t pay up there’s a late payment charge of £5 per day.

SoulSilveringFloatyLilac · 30/06/2022 21:51

I was waiting for a small payment, repeated requests, to no avail. i went on the small claims website.
Read everything that I had to do, decided it was worth paying the £20 I had to.
I did as advised, and warned them I was going to take them to small claims court ( online) and they paid..almost straight away.
look it up online

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 30/06/2022 21:55

Don't babysit for them again.

A friend of mine was a childminder who also babysat at night to supplement her income. A couple with one baby who lived in a very naice area repeatedly played this trick on her - no cash in their wallet, lost their bank card, would pay her next time. She was gullible and believed them as they had a lot of work for her. They often drove her home or paid for her taxi if they had been drinking too and one night they went one step further and told her that they had paid her and she must have lost the payment in the taxi. She kept telling them that they hadn't handed her any money but they insisted they had. It was really upsetting for her at the time. Obviously she stopped babysitting for them.
I was so shocked by the story as she was obviously not financially well off and they were.

Mumwithbaggage · 30/06/2022 22:08

I tutor and use Starling. I'm notified immediately when someone pays. Maybe ask for it before they leave to go out/you leave their house. A pain for you and very rude of them.

Lonelylonelylonely · 30/06/2022 22:18

I also tutor. I've learned over the years to have very strict terms and conditions. It can seem a bit officious, but there are still ways of delivering your t&c in a friendly manner whilst making it clear you are offering a professional service. I now have a 24 hour payment in advance policy. It works well 99% of the time and for those that don't pay on time, I'm not available for the session.

I never accept cash. Bank transfer or PayPal is more transparent and easier for me to fill in my tax return.

Suchasonganddance · 30/06/2022 22:20

Mention that you will be suggesting to the Revenue service that they investigate them.

Can you remind them via a public message on FaceBook?

nuclear option

Yep - name and shame.

Get your money and never help them out again.

Yes I do training courses for the NHS. I am NEVER paid within two months. Three months is good going. Bloody ridiculous.

Happyhappyday · 30/06/2022 22:34

Totally unreasonable, our nanny prefers online payment but when she does babysitting outside of the full time job, I pay her while we’re chatting/saying goodnight, ie, immediately. It’s my job to pay her on time!

ekinsu · 30/06/2022 22:36

you obviously don’t need the money if you’re happy to send a couple of meek texts

NattyNatashia · 30/06/2022 22:36

Not unreasoable as such, you can ask for payment however you want. That said it's accademic how you asked to be paid if they're not actually going to pay it! Don't bother with stories to justify, simply say you want payment on the day if that is important to you. If they're bad payers though I would avoid.

goldfinchonthelawn · 30/06/2022 22:37

Tell them you are adding an hour to what they owe since it has taken an hour of your time to keep chasing them for the money.

In future tell people that you have to have cash up front or a transfer of the agreed number of hours on arrival, due to people forgetting to pay you in the past.

Not nuclear at all, I think that all non-payers should be exposed so they don't get to cheat other mugs.
