This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

I think democracy, peace and freedom are just a fleeting phase...this has been a brief period in humanity. It will disappear eventually. It's already starting.

AchatAVendre · 29/06/2022 11:52

Great question OP!

  • Vast improvement in convictions for rape. At the moment, its mainly legal in the UK.
  • Allied to the above, more use of court rules designed to protect vulnerable witnesses in rape and sexual assault cases.
  • In the UK, more women in jobs that in this country only, are strangely dominated by men.
  • The UK becoming more and more like the US in most ways. Unfortunately.
  • A bigger gap between the UK and the EU in areas such as human rights, fundamental rights, healthcare, employment rights, salaries, standard of living, public transport, infrastructure, etc..
  • A growing political movement to rejoin the EU.
  • More Scottish neverendums.
  • Near world war at which it steps back from the brink at the last moment, causing widespread poverty which as a side effect, results in a loss of focus of "alternative and woke" issues as people battle famine, poverty and try to restore order.
  • New leadership in Russia; better relations with Russia as a result.
  • More working from home.
  • Numerous investments in the NHS, none of which prevent it from becoming the worst healthcare system in the developed world.
  • A move back to traditional British culture, most of which has now been lost due to various controls, bans and urbanisation, as part of a growing realisation that much of it was more green and better for the planet.
  • More legal controls over minority groups disrupting civic life.
  • More political corruption and obnoxious self serving politicians.

Smacking children. Most people don't think it acceptable but it is still legal

It is illegal in Scotland and Wales.

Yes, I did actually know that, quite right too.

Apologies for being all England-centric, my bad! I think I meant to write here.

Religion - it will be reclassified as a mental illness

Second homes will be banned.

Good point.

  • More Scots deciding to spend their money elsewhere by buying second homes outwith Scotland e.g. France, Spain, Italy, any of the many other countries around the world whose citizens enjoy this right.
  • Shortly followed by capital controls on Scots taking their money out of Scotland

If we are saying dogs shitting on pavements (even if picked up) then also cats being allowed to roam everywhere and poo wherever they like. They are awful for local wildlife as well and owners are able to let them roam without any recall. People are already pushing for cats to be treated the same as dogs if they are hit by a car but the other side of that is that they'd not be allowed off lead outside their owners' property unless they had good recall and the owners would have to pick up after them.

I used to live overseas where there weren’t any illegal requirements for car seats. When the law was introduced, people were up in arms about how they could no longer fit everyone in the car. I remember one comment from the news paper was that it was unfair as the children could no longer sit on their grandparents laps in the back of the car and they couldn’t fit 3 kids and 2 adults in the backseats. Apparently the government weren’t thinking of families. This was also a country where RTA’s were really common.

Impact on social skills, mental health and physical health of so much time spent online.

Impact of encouraging young people to medically/ surgically alter their bodies.

Winniewonka · 29/06/2022 12:10

I disagree that future generations will be horrified about allowing access to phones for young children. In 30/40 years the children that now have access will be the parents for whom it's completely normal. It wouldn't surprise me if it becomes common to microchip children to allow a tracking device.

mind your own business, you do you - is appropriate when :

abuse / neglect / distress / mistreatment on animals is suspected

suspected !!!! Not definite 🤬

"I have a horrible feeling that there will be a move towards making older people feel like they are a drain on society. In fact I’m seeing it now.

Let’s face it, adult care is not affordable (no one had come up with a solution to that so far).

The young don’t want their inheritance whittled away in nursing home fees and people are being devalued and mocked as they get older and given derogatory names such as ‘boomer’.

As the environment and shortage of resources becomes ever more apparent it will make it even worse. There will be an expectation on older people to opt for euthanasia once they reach a certain age eg 75 - they will be put under pressure and guilt tripped into it in the same way that new mothers are pressured to breast feed and have natural births etc."*

Agree with this comment here @Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase . It would be nice if there were an end to ageism and if older people were valued in the UK the way that they are in other cultures . It's shocking that euthanasia seems to be given as the standard response to dementia by some many on MN. Imagine if people decided to stop researching cures into cancer and decided to put all sick people 'out of their misery '.

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 29/06/2022 12:45

Some of these responses are like when you watch an old sci-fi film that had people in The Future (1999) wearing silver jumpsuits and surviving on nutrition pills whilst driving flying cars Smile

I think human nature doesn't change that much. We aren't moving towards some utopia. And if you've read any science fiction, you'll be wary of the idea of an apparent utopia anyway.

Trans ideology is based on lies and obfuscation and will ultimately butt up against reality. Unfortunately, it has money behind it and will cause a lot of harm in the meantime, mainly to women and children. But I think that in the end, it's a grift, and you can only run a grift for so long.

Allowing men to compete in women's sports.

Allowing men to go to women's prisons because they "feel" female.

It's not just MN. It's everyone I have ever discussed dementia with IRL. Once it gets to a point there is no way I'd want to live. It's not just dementia. I have severe RA. If I am not dead before I get bedbound I will want to be.

BobbinHood · 29/06/2022 12:58

Driving short journeys in petrol and diesel cars. We know how many excess deaths are caused by pollution, including in children, but most people won’t even consider taking an alternative option which might cause them the slightest inconvenience.

HoneyFlowers · 29/06/2022 13:08

We will look back and be horrified at:
Wow humans used to have to physically drive a car!
Oh wow those pumped up lips, we now realise how bad they were for xx reasons.
How awful fake fingernails are.
There will be webcams in classrooms so we can now see our kids learning and wow, you never knew before what was happening at school.
People are now too afraid to speak to each other for fear of offending.

I agree with this post.

I can’t imagine people completely stopping eating meat or everyone becoming vegan for example (people might eat less meat though).

I also can’t imagine religion completely disappearing (and I’m not religious) - humans have had different religious beliefs for millennia, and even those who don’t believe in God sometimes follow dogmatic views (see the “no debate” approach when it comes to trans issues).
