To be upset when cafes/restaurants refuse to heat up baby food due to Health and Safety?

Might of been having a bad day but went to Neros in House of Fraser, Guildford with my 2 children, one of which has just started solids. Ordered all our food and handed the chap my dc baby food and he said that they no longer heat baby food up due to health and safety! They said they could sit the food in a cup of hot water but they were not allowed to give me the boiling hot water... strange considering they are happy to give me a boiling hot cup of coffee!.. how would they like it if their plate of food was heated up by sitting it in hot water!!!

Am I just miserable?

no - but your baby could have it cold?

Alambil · 15/01/2008 22:43

No - it seems weird! What difference is a hot coffee and hot plain water - they both scold the same in an accident!

No YANBU. I stopped going to a cafe in a supermarket because of the 100% mark up on baby food in the restaurant and the fact that they wouldn't heat it up. For a £1.20 can of hipp organic baby food that sold for 60p in the rest of the store i expected it served in a diamond encrusted bowl with a blardy silver spoon.

canmummy · 15/01/2008 22:45

YABU - all 3 of my dc ate cold/room temperature baby food for exactly this reason! They've never complained although friends and especially my mum have been horrified!

(But secretly I do think it's an odd rule)

fingerwoman · 15/01/2008 22:49

hmmm so they didn't actually refuse to heat it for you then?
in fact, they said they would heat it.

so, what's the problem?

unfortunatel;y in our "compensation culture" restaurants and cafes are responsible if you scald your baby with food.
that is why they won't microwave it and can only heat it in water.

lewy · 15/01/2008 22:53

Mmm maybe I am just miserable
Why shouldnt my baby have its food warmed up
Fingerwoman - technically you are right!, but food doesnt really get warmed up when just popped into cup of hot water.

Cafes have silly rules, I was at a coffee shop one day and the guy in front of me asked for no lid on his takeaway coffee. They told him it was a "rule" that it had to have a lid.

The drink-in ones? Of course no lid.

Another coffee shop insisted they they warm up a bottle of baby milk in a jug of water, on a counter, they sold the same woman a cappuccino....

lulumama · 16/01/2008 07:38

they did offer to heat it, just not in the way you thought i.e microwave

industrial microwaves can make food incredibly hot, very quickly.

heating it yourself in hot water gives more control over the heat

jars can be served room temperature !

or take finger food for your baby baby led weaning, no purees, no jars, no faff!!!

so, YABU and yes, sorry, you are being miserable

OverMyDeadBody · 16/01/2008 07:43

I agree with lulumama, YABU, they are not trying to be difficult, just covering their own backs.

Emprexia · 16/01/2008 12:49

buy a travel bottle warmer and put the jar in there.. or serve at room temperature.

It is irritating, but i'm afraid it has to be expected these days.

HandbagAddiction · 16/01/2008 12:58

Lewy - for the future when you're in Guildford, the cafe on the ground floor in Debenhams does have a 'parents use' microwave that you can use for heating up food. OK - so the surroundings aren't as nice as Nero's but at least you can warm the food up yourself.

Other idea would be to get your dc onto things like avocado and banana as soon as possible - then you don't have to worry about hot things at all.
