To tell the woman in the car in front to turn her engine off?

Niceshotdoc · 28/06/2022 14:03

Sat in the car waiting for DS. Residential street. Woman in front has been idling her car for the past 10 minutes. Presumably for the air con. We're right next to peoples gardens. I really want her to turn it off. So selfish. Shall I?

Tell the selfish cow where to get off. I'm with you in spirit and would do such a thing myself if I were about a foot taller and built like a brick shithouse. Grin

Porridgeislife · 28/06/2022 14:12

It’s so selfish. And an offence under the Road Traffic Act.

Plus it’s literally an own goal, you’re poisoning yourself running the AC whilst idle.

This. And shit for the planet. I'd tell her - politely. But she should know. Selfish cow.

FixTheBone · 28/06/2022 17:16

Idling if necessary to keep the climate control working in hot or cold weather is probably excluded from potential offence, so if it's a nice day, they can probably get away with it anyway.

Frown at them, and move on.

I sometimes cant believe how stupid people are.

It is not excluded.

You cannot idle. What is it you're finding so hard to understand?

AllNightDiner · 28/06/2022 16:10

Christ, this thread is a bit of an eye opener.

Presumably the attraction of aircon instead of just winding down your windows on a hot day is that you can maintain perfect environmental comfort in your idiotic gas guzzler without disturbing a perfect hair on your idiotic head.

I would not have thought I knew anyone quite this shallow and selfish, but the surprisingly equal division of opinion here suggests that statistically I probably must.

What awful people you all are.

Hope you're not lumping me in with that. I did it a max of four times, and never outside of a school!

FixTheBone · 28/06/2022 17:25

Nothing.

The law is literal and it say unecessary idling - if you can argue that the engine needed to be on, you have the basis of a defence.

mam0918 · 28/06/2022 17:27

Of all the illegal and bloody dangerous stuff I see on the road daily this is litrally no where on my list of concerns.

However the parents that park/stop in mass on the residental streets to pick up their kids thats in my top 5 most selfish and stupid road behaviors. The ones here are always being told by police, the church and the school they cant park there and they STILL do.

A kid got run over last week due to it. They block the view of the roads, they block dropped curbs for wheelchair access, They come at small street in their dozens from all directions, reversing, speeding round corners and doing u-turns out of nowhere without looking and more.

It really is a display of the stupidest road acts all in one when you get entitled parents who feel they can use the non designed residental areas as pit stops to save them having to walk so the fact you are one of them and judging others is hypocrasy at its best.

Mememene · 28/06/2022 17:32

So you are sitting in your car which when driven is causing pollution and want to complain about someone elses driving habits that are causing even more pollution?

If you were really so concerned about the environment why don't you approach the other people at the school for a car share scheme?

If someone told me to turn off my engine, in my car, when I may well have a good reason to have it on, I might be inclined to politely requested they wind their neb in.

Pot kettle black anyone?

OperaStation · 28/06/2022 17:33

Yes, it’s an offense to sit with your engine idling.

I wish I had the balls to do this.

There is no good reason. It’s an offence.

KBLondon · 28/06/2022 17:35

I’ve ordered some of these flyers to put in postboxes. Makes me feel like I’m doing something about the issue while letting me avoid direct confrontation 😂.

www.mumsforlungs.org/resources-and-downloads

When I was pregnant with my second the hospital was handing out leaflets encouraging pregnant women to reduce the amount of time they spent in cars as the pollution has similar effects on the baby as smoking does. And the pollution when you’re in an idling vehicle is even worse.

This is not a small issue. I’m now convincing myself that I need to pluck up the courage to talk to the selfish idlers next time.

Also re: the MS excuse — my cousin who has got MS travels around everywhere in the summer with lunchbox style ice packs and a battery powered fan to help her cool off. I’m 100% certain she wouldn’t condone poisoning other people so she could keep cool.

'If you don't live in a stick hut in the woods, don't tell me shit. Hell, even if you breathe you emit CO2'.

Terrible mentality. Just turn off your damn engine.

Pigsears · 28/06/2022 17:42

When not driving, turn off your car. Not tricky to understand. If you are hot, open the window or the door. Or, get out of the car and find some shade.

RainydaysandFridays · 28/06/2022 17:42

Gosh some very self centred people on here- probably the same kind of person who just parks where they like.

UrsulaPandress · 28/06/2022 17:43

All these lily livers

I’ve marched outside in my dressing gown at 12.30 at night and told someone to switch their engine off if they insisted on sitting outside my house having a chat. The woman told me to fuck off. The chap conceded I was right and drove off.

Ohtoberoavingagain · 28/06/2022 17:45

AryaStarkWolf · 28/06/2022 14:05

Why?

Because it stinks. And pollutes the air. I have to close front windows at afternoon pick up as there’s always one that sits outside with the engine running. So selfish.

CulturePigeon · 28/06/2022 17:47

It's all our business - if only it wasn't. And not being a perfect environmentalist shouldn't stop anyone trying to to their bit.

I don't understand the 'Mind you own business' when something is clearly affecting us all. If she was just inhaling her own exhaust, then maybe it wouldn't be anyone else's business.

If I tip my garden waste into a stream, for eg - that's not just my business.

jetadore · 28/06/2022 17:54

The world is full of selfish shits. This thread too. Best thing is to try not to give them any headspace. People at the campsites leave their cars idling to charge their phones. Entitled cunts, and, as per pps, fully aware and proud of it.

MrsEdnaWelthorpe · 28/06/2022 17:54

RealBecca · 28/06/2022 16:11

Yanbu, drives me mad.

Plenty of people say it's none of your business but I'm sure they wouldn't think it was fine to throw litter or let a dog shit everywhere. All a risk to public health.

Air pollution is a major killer. Wake the fuck up.

I dunno, I think a Venn diagram of people who think it's their right to sit in the car with the engine idling and people who throw their litter wherever they feel like would have a pretty big overlap.

Of course it isn't. AC isn't essential. Neither is heating. If you are somewhere too early, or are waiting, you open the window/go for a walk/put an extra coat on/find somewhere shady.

I'd love to see "I needed the AC to run" being used as an excuse in court.

The planet really is buggered isn't it.

Well done you. I am afraid I am too much of a coward. That sort of idiot might decide to shove dog poo (or worse) through the letterbox if they knew where I lived.

If I was having a hot flush and someone told me to turn off the engine for the AC I’d tear them a new one.

There are small fans you can carry round with you. Opening the window still works on all but the hottest days. It is the UK after all.
