To tell the woman in the car in front to turn her engine off?

Niceshotdoc · 28/06/2022 14:03

Sat in the car waiting for DS. Residential street. Woman in front has been idling her car for the past 10 minutes. Presumably for the air con. We're right next to peoples gardens. I really want her to turn it off. So selfish. Shall I?

OP posts:
mummyh2016 · 28/06/2022 14:04

No. Someone telling me to turn my engine off would make me leave it on even longer. Nothing to do with you.

AryaStarkWolf · 28/06/2022 14:05

Why?

balalake · 28/06/2022 14:05

Wasting fuel. Helping Mr Putin. Unfortunately you are unlikely to persuade her to love the Ukrainian people by turning her engine off.

driedgrassinavase · 28/06/2022 14:05

Mind your own business

Porridgeislife · 28/06/2022 14:12

It’s so selfish. And an offence under the Road Traffic Act.

Plus it’s literally an own goal, you’re poisoning yourself running the AC whilst idle.

Puffalicious · 28/06/2022 14:14

Mind your own business!

Thatboymum · 28/06/2022 14:16

I’m more likely to leave mine on and stay longer just to upset you if you dared to tell me what to do in my own car

No. Someone telling me to turn my engine off would make me leave it on even longer. Nothing to do with you.

Even though it's an offence?

It's so bloody selfish when people sit with their engines running. It's an irritating noise to be forced into your lugs.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/06/2022 14:17

People don't give a shit about air quality so long as they aren't the ones struggling to breathe.

MargotMoon · 28/06/2022 14:17

I'd love to ask people not to do this but I'm too averse to confrontation.

vivainsomnia · 28/06/2022 14:20

What if ultimately you do much worse than her polluting the air because you drive more often when you don't have to, fly to foreign countries etc...

Unless you are a model environmentalist, who are you to tell others what they should be doing?

Howeverdoyouneedme · 28/06/2022 14:23

Well as you can see OP, you wouldn’t get a polite reception. People are very weird about their cars.

Cas112 · 28/06/2022 14:25

No, grow up

Even though you'd be breaking the law?

megletthesecond · 28/06/2022 14:26

Yanbu.
But tbh I'd take a photo and be emailing the council and Community police. We're trying to crack down on it in our estate. It's an offence.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/06/2022 14:27

Unless you are a model environmentalist, who are you to tell others what they should be doing?

Because it's illegal?

TeapotTitties · 28/06/2022 14:27

YABU to tell anyone anything. You could have a polite word though. However I doubt you will, considering you've had to ask the internet first.

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 28/06/2022 14:27

I agree with you OP, but I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to actually do it.

SavoirFlair · 28/06/2022 14:27

Cas112 · 28/06/2022 14:25

No, grow up

Why do people always say "grow up" on threads like this?

What about @Niceshotdoc 's post was immature?

Is there anything immature about caring about the air quality our DCs and ourselves breathe?

It is an offence to idle your engine. But it's the OP who needs to 'grow up' by suggesting such?

I think you @Cas112 need to grow up and learn how adults debate.

Dogsandbabies · 28/06/2022 14:28

So many selfish people on here. Air quality around schools is worse because of parents doing that.

I always tell people and so do the children.

QuestionableMouse · 28/06/2022 14:28

Had a problem with mine starting recently so occasionally had to leave it running. Fixed now but was a right pain at the time because there was a decent chance that if I turned it off, I wouldn't be able to get it running again!

Isleoftights · 28/06/2022 14:29

I live by a beach, where people park up to look at the sea. Many leave their engines running. The whole climate crisis campaign is doomed to fail, because...nobody gives a toss.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/06/2022 14:30

If someone set tyres alight outside your home you wouldn't be sat indoors worrying about your own carbon foot print hypocrisy, because that would be a level of harm that you would recognise for yourself.

Herejustforthisone · 28/06/2022 14:30

I have to idle my car’s engine before I drive away. Once the revs drop I’m good to go.

I also once got a rollicking from someone for having the engine running while stationary on the side of the road. It was 32 degrees outside, I was driving home from the hospital with my first baby and I had stopped to feed them as it was a two hour journey to get home. I told them to do one. Politely. More or less.

So? Unless OP is a police officer she can't enforce the law.
