To have swapped the swede?

DS has ASD and I screwed his noodle this morning by not having available for his lunchbox The Correct Midmorning School Snack of a lump of raw swede.

So on the way home from school I stopped in at the poncy local shop and bought the only swede they had. It cost £1.05, which seemed a lot for food you usually feed to sheep, but autism I love him. Especially seeing as it had a very small crossection cut off the side (50p size) and the start of a brown bit within that, that would need to be cut off before DS would see it.

I'd also failed to buy DH's preferred cereal option but poncy local shop didn't have it so I took a long cut home to stop in Sainsbury's local to see if they had it, because I love him too (and as we all know true love is varyingly oral sex or buying preferred cereal - I'll leave it to you which leaves a better taste in your mouth). They had a better selection of Swedes at a slightly more reasonable 80p.

Would I have been unreasonable to have swapped my £1.05 swede for another at 80p? It wasn't any bigger but maybe a little better.

So you'd be fine with someone taking say.... a nice lamp from your house and replacing it with an inferior one?

This is interesting. So, if the Swedes were of identical size and quality, it'd be ok to go from shop to stop, swapping Swedes?

I'm surprised the first swede cost more, presumably the horsey people who usually buy them are not so worried about cost as Sainsbury's average customer, but yes, you would have been unreasonable to swap an animal feed grade swede for a human food grade swede.

I think the OP was joking when she talked about people feeding it to sheep. I don't think she was literally suggesting it was being sold for that purpose.

In the poncy shop people buy them for human consumption, but it's not that weird to walk past a field in Scotland and see sheep eating Swedes that have been turned over out of the group. Right racket it makes, too

She's taken a swede from a shop and not paid for it.

Swede is not a form of currency so can't be used as payment.

Of course it counts as stealing.

But if there is another swede in the shop, the shop has the same number of Swedes as it started with, so will sell them for the same amount of money, so it isn't being deprived of anything? How can there be theft without deprivation?

I swapped mine for a Dane. Still not sure whether it was a good move or not.

What cereal was it?

Shredded wheat. Breakfast for people who don't understand pleasure. Would rather eat the swede.

Let's say you invite me to your home for a delightful Swede based dinner. I accept, because frankly times are hard. While at your home, I wait until your back is turned and swap my slightly holey blue jumper for your better blue jumper I spy on the back of your chair. You are not deprived of a jumper, so I did nothing wrong, by your logic.

Although they can be interchanged in recipes

Bollocks they can! Swedes and turnips taste completely different.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 27/06/2022 12:31

Also I don't know why people think you can't eat them raw, I've done it for years and not had any trouble! Turnips and swedes both fine.

Maybe it’s because you can’t eat raw potatoes?

Hoppinggreen · 27/06/2022 13:31

IF you took a swede from the supermarket without paying then that is theft.
The fact that you left something behind in the supermarket is irrelevant

Swedesareneeps · 27/06/2022 12:28

Bizarrely, no. Standard but very expensive swede.

Would folk be less likely to say it was theft if the original swede had been of better provenance?

I don’t think so.

You know that it would be wrong, but you are hoping that it is not wrong enough that people will criticise you for it. It’s more in line with eating from the pick and mix, or shoving your fingers up your bum and then into a carton of ice-cream which you put back in the freezer (see recent thread) rather than stealing a joint of beef, but you still know that it’s not the right thing to do.

TeapotTitties · 27/06/2022 13:35

No.

Did you actually swap the swedes because you seem to be avoiding the question?

HaveringWavering · 27/06/2022 13:40

Why are you trying to make out that Scotland has some special hold over swedes?! What a weird flex.

@SaveTheSharks

swedes came from Sweden. Hence the name. You are incorrectly calling then turnips.
and I am from a part of the U.K. that calls them turnips too. And we are all wrong as well. They’re officially called swedes.

They’re officially called brassica napobrassica. There are no rules as to which colloquial name is correct- use whichever regional variation takes your fancy. I wasn’t suggesting that people who call them swedes should call them turnips.

What I was doing was having a little joke with the OP about the fact that she had probably “translated” the name for an English audience. Same as I might gently rub a British person who talked about “zucchini” and “eggplant”.

My Norwegian relatives call them Rutabaga, as do most Americans. I always think that would be a good name to use on a fine dining menu, if you wanted to pretend you were using posh ingredients but save a fortune by cooking with animal fodder Grin

CandyLeBonBon · 27/06/2022 13:44

Pickled turnip is lovely.
Swedes and turnips are not the same.
Mashed swede is good of the gods.
Mashed turnip can get in the sea.

CandyLeBonBon · 27/06/2022 13:46

Rutabaga is a turnip not a Swede. They're not interchangeable / they're two completely different tasting and looking vegetables.

It's like saying dogs are cats!! .

No. Rutabaga and Swede are the same vegetable. RHS website confirms it

HaveringWavering · 27/06/2022 13:51

Here’s an example of the American usage, with a picture! @CandyLeBonBon

CandyLeBonBon · 27/06/2022 13:52

Swedish turnip is still the same vegetable as a swede though. The white turnip the one on my pic) is the one I was referring to. They're definitely not the same! But they are cousins.

Jacopo · 27/06/2022 13:56

Turnips and Shredded Wheat … I feel as if I’ve been transported back to my 1950s childhood, OP.

Sorry you’ve lost me.

All I’m saying is this:

Rutabaga (American) = Swede (English) = Turnip or Neep (Scottish)

turnip (English) = white turnip (Scottish) =some word that is not Rutabaga (American)

Lobelia123 · 27/06/2022 13:58

I'm crushed. I clicked on this expecting a story about having traded in a nubile young Swedish lover for a Frenchman or Italian :) Instead of which I got vegetables. False advertising!!!

CandyLeBonBon · 27/06/2022 13:58

Haha don't worry @HaveringWavering it's not a bill I want to die on!

Still love mashed swede though!

CandyLeBonBon · 27/06/2022 13:59

Hill not bill! 😂

jetadore · 27/06/2022 13:59

OP if you’re not writing for a living, you should be. Hopefully on more interesting subjects than swede-swapping though. Swap it, or don’t. Who cares?

HaveringWavering · 27/06/2022 14:00

Are you following me now @CandyLeBonBon ? My point is that the vegetables are called different things in different English speaking countries so you can’t possibly state “Swedes and turnips are not the same” without saying in which country.

lolil · 27/06/2022 14:00

I would have simply bought the better vegetable for my son.
