...to feel roleplay is fairly normal?

DH and I have been together 15 years, our sex life eventually fell into a lull but about 6 months ago we started role-playing and since then it's been like it was when we first got together. We're totally 'caught up' in each other all over again and our relationship has never been better.

However a couple of nights ago I was talking to two good friends and the topic of role play came up... I never even hinted that this has recently rejuvenated my life but the general response within the conversation was my friends both laughing/mocking it. One even said it's only for 'deviants and weirdos'.

AIBU to say it's actually way more 'normal' and regular? Or am I unknowingly a sexual deviant? 😂

(And yes, I have name-changed for this!)

But unless you were planning to have them join you then it really doesn't matter what they think. You're having a good time which is what's important!
Personally I could never completely throw myself into role play and ended up feeling silly...but it is pretty common I think!

D0lphine · 26/06/2022 22:18

Yeah I think roleplay is very very normal. Clearly you enjoy it as does your OH. Ignore your prudish friends- you know to never discuss it with them in future.

TheVolturi · 26/06/2022 22:20

Ahhh fuck it. We do something quite similar, not quite roleplay but not too different. We have amazing sex because of it so who cares!

HoldingTheDoor · 26/06/2022 22:21

Posted too soon.

But no, I don't think it's that uncommon or weird.

Bogofftosomewherehot · 26/06/2022 22:23

"All I can think of is Claire and Phil Dumphy, sorry."

ME too!!! Clive and ???? - damn, forgot her role play name!

Chikapu · 26/06/2022 22:25

I enjoy it, its not meant to be serious, having a laugh is very much allowed. Our favourite is me dressing as Buffy the vampire slayer while my husband is a vampire. I might be the slayer but I'm always the one who ends up being impaled...

RaginaPhalange · 26/06/2022 22:26

If that's what you're into then who are we to judge. It's not for me personally.

ThickCutSteakChips · 26/06/2022 22:26

Come on, tell us which show!

Also intrigued as to what you do? Nosey, I know.

Good lord no, it's pretty mainstream when you think about it, depending on what roles you're playing of course!

It's not like you're talking about shibari or soemthing

OK, I don't dare Google 'Shibari' so cam someone tell me what it is? Grin

Crinkler · 26/06/2022 22:02

Well, trying not to be too specific but... there's a tv show we both love, he plays one character, I play the other.

We don't do huge, long acting scenes though, we don't do a half hour of Corrie to get into it or anything 😂

This reminds me of Rodney trotter and his wife on only fools - glad it's working for you OP!

Ropes and very specific ways of tying them I think.

It makes me think of Pam and Mick from Gavin and Stacey and their Charles/Camilla thing. "It's always been you....Camilla".
I couldn't do it without laughing.

It made me think of Dawn and Pete in Gavin and Stacey, role playing in the hotel bar.

I don't think it's weird or anything but I can't imagine doing it myself.

Keepyoursarcasmtoyourself · 26/06/2022 22:32

I'd be embarrassed. I would hate it! But I wouldn't think anybody who could pull it off was a deviant or a weirdo, just a bit more relaxed than me.

TheGoogleMum · 26/06/2022 22:33

It's not our thing but it sounds harmless enough.

Crinkler · 26/06/2022 22:35

...Ok, it's Outlander 😊😊

(And yes, I do honestly have a spring in my step in Tesco 😂)

Ah fair enough. I'm intrigued though, how do you get into character enough to get fully immersed as it where?

elQuintoConyo · 26/06/2022 22:40

Why not? I bought DH a gladiator outfit from the fancy dress shop "for carnival" 😉 so no one looked at me weirdly. I run the colluseum and accuse him of selling me 'queer giraffe' .

You can borrow that one, if you like.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 26/06/2022 22:43

In fairness, I’m not sure I’d need the full role play, DH could just whisper Sassenach in my ear and I’d be good to go!

FfeminyddCymraeg · 26/06/2022 22:45

Good for you OP! I couldn’t take my DH seriously if he started taking on a different role (even Jamie from Outlander!).

NeedASolution · 26/06/2022 22:49

I've done it quite a bit with a couple of partners but I am quite creative in this way. I've never done full-on fancy dress though, just slipping into ways of being / storylines, etc. I find it fun and liberating but there is plenty of stuff others love that I would find too alarming to venture. Each to their own and that.

Sunshine10012 · 26/06/2022 23:09

I’ve always liked the idea of role play. It’s a bit of fun isn’t it.

people saying they’d laugh, well what’s wrong with having a laugh in bed??
there are times for ‘love making’ times for quickies and times for making it a fun playful night.
don’t worry about what your friends think, if you enjoy it who cares.
