To think you don’t need to wear so much perfume?

My friend came round two days ago and I can still smell her perfume in my house. Several times I’ve been out walking and a car will drive past and I can smell their aftershave several meters along the round.

I am very sensitive to smells which can trigger migraines, but even so, AIBU to think people should tone it down a bit?

YANBU. I have asthma and the wrong artificial scent leaves me having a nasty spasmy coughing fit. Artificial scents degrade into nasty substances that you don't want to breathe in, too.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/06/2022 22:26

It’s really up to other people to decide what perfumes they wear, not you. You can only control yourself.

However, if you want to say something to your friend next time before she comes round tho you could. But I probably wouldn’t.

Maybe just arrange to meet up outside?

Scianel · 24/06/2022 22:38

In some countries they don't allow strong scents in eg offices. In Japan its a big faux pas to wear strong perfume where it will be inflicted on others.
I wish that was the case here.

MsMarple · 24/06/2022 22:46

I feel your pain - I’m allergic to perfume too and there are some friends I always meet outside!

I think the trouble for some people is that if they wear a scent all the time they don’t notice it as much, so they spray on extra until they are saturated with the stuff.

JubileeTrifle · 24/06/2022 23:13

Im allergic to perfume also. I think some wearers can’t smell it so pile it on. Makes me so unwell.

SuziSecondLaw · 24/06/2022 23:15

Agreed.

I hate all perfume, aftershave etc. It always just smells like chemicals.. Like I can taste the fakeness of it. Horrible!

ImAvingOops · 24/06/2022 23:18

Most people like scent, so I think it's unreasonable to expect the majority to tone it down because the minority don't like it.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 24/06/2022 23:18

I'd like it to become socially unacceptable to wear strong scents, much like smoking or spitting.

Penguinsaregreat · 24/06/2022 23:18

I've never noticed any women wearing too much perfume. Men yes but not women. I remember when old men would wear Old Spice, absolutely revolting.

JS87 · 24/06/2022 23:18

Perfume gives me migraines too. Wish it was banned in work places.

Madmaxxy · 24/06/2022 23:37

Not allergic or anything but I do hate it, especially in restaurants

Xmasbaby11 · 24/06/2022 23:42

I absolutely love smelling perfume and aftershave on people! I don't mind strong scents at all and I like it when I can smell someone's perfume. I seem to like most, can't think of any I dislike. I guess everyone is different.

Can't say I regularly encounter anyone that wears really strong perfume. A colleague wears the same scent that my mum used to wear - but if I smell anyone wearing perfume 90% of the time its that one, so I think it;s just particularly triggering for me.

What I can't abide is women that stand in an open office and squirt on spray deodrant - it's bad enough if people do it in a loo. Disgusting. Not experienced it in a while - definite side benefit of lockdown 😆

Shedcity · 24/06/2022 23:54

I like it
the amount of people that walk past and you can smell a stale smell, cooking, cigarettes, alcohol, damp, or BO is shocking
id much prefer to smell a lovely perfume or aftershave on someone

Tinktravels · 24/06/2022 23:57

Nope I love it, no better compliment than you smell nice

Scianel · 25/06/2022 00:04

"You stink of overpowering fake scent" isn't a complement.
It's as antisocial as playing music in public without headphones. Possibly more so.

Gives me a horrible headache and tends to cling to my hair as well.
We're living in a society with quite a lot of odour pollution as well as noise pollution now.

FamilyGredunza · 25/06/2022 00:05

My idea of hell would be being locked in Lush. Those shops absolutely reek!

September29th · 25/06/2022 00:11

A man walked past us in the supermarket today, he stank so much it knocked me backwards.
I can always tell when my neighbour is in the garden by the smell wafting through the fence on one side. The other side absolutely reeks of toxic reed air fresheners when the door and windows are open, plus the washing outside. It makes me feel queasy, some of it is also actual perfume rather than added boosters to laundry or house fresheners. A real mix of stench from both sides. What happened to just being clean, and what are they hiding/so insecure about?

dottypotter · 25/06/2022 00:22

I love smelling perfume. Better than smelling of

dottypotter · 25/06/2022 00:22

Fags.

Laundry detergent, fabric softener, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and deodorant are all perfumed. Then people spray actual perfume on top of all that.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2022 00:28

YANBU. Most people are way OTT.

CharSiu · 25/06/2022 02:37

Same here it can trigger sinusitis. When I travel I have to make sure the hotel will boil wash everything or take my own bedding because I get a contact a,ketgic reaction. Body odour may smell bad but I’m not going to have an allergic reaction to it.

Mushroomlady · 25/06/2022 02:50

Curious as to whether the PPs saying YABU really think it's wonderful that people can still smell your perfume 2 days after you've left the area? I mean, really?
