To think you don’t need to wear so much perfume?

My friend came round two days ago and I can still smell her perfume in my house. Several times I’ve been out walking and a car will drive past and I can smell their aftershave several meters along the round.

I am very sensitive to smells which can trigger migraines, but even so, AIBU to think people should tone it down a bit?

And yet Mumsnet adores Zoflora.

They really don't! It's a running joke on some threads.

Bet they're spraying more on due to the hot weather.

Perfume is one of those things that Mumsnet is weird about, in a way that doesn’t reflect the real world in any way whatsoever.

All these people who might have commented on your perfume IRL, let me break it to you gently, but they didn't comment because they liked what you were wearing. They were just too polite to say what they really thought, but wanted to draw your attention to it.

Really not the case outside of mumsnet. If I compliment someone on theor perfume it's because I like the smell.

Did I mention complimenting in my post?

But it wasn't your opinion!!

it was being nasty saying all compliments about perfume were lies & just bringing the notes perfume wearing to their attention.

if I compliment someone's perfume it's because it's lovely, not a way to tell them it's actually horrible.

you stated an untruth as a truth, that's not stating your opinion!!

Again, where in my post did I say compliment?

'Natural' perfumes wouldn't be any better than synthetic?

Even if it's a natural chemical, it will still be made with a synthetic process and it will require a carrier formulation. Don't get me started on people taking "natural" herbs or whatever & being sniffy about big pharma.

I was a chemist in the dim & distant past.

I know, I agree! The lines are quite blurred between 'natural' and synthetic chemicals but it sounds like you could explain it better than me.

I havent read the full thread, but I admit I might be one of these people even though I dont like it in others. I particularly hate men/boys that wear Lynx

But I suffer from asmosia, it comes and goes, its unpredictable and sometimes I wake up and dont quite know its back again so Im spraying on stuff and suddenly it clicks that I cant smell, it comes and goes throughout the day or during the week sometimes my sense of smell is back for a month or two, its difficult to predict

But I really do hate 'heavy' scents, that are very musky, I tend to wear very light lemony or citrus scents.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/06/2022 15:49

YANBU. Perfume should whisper, not scream.

Worst ever that I can remember was in the 70s, when someone I knew used to drench herself in Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew - God, it was horrible stuff!

Oldraver · 25/06/2022 15:53

I have separate bedding for my Mum as she uses so much perfume it like Byers even after washing

Hated youth dew

Dgm bought some for me but I gave it to my dm. She didn't like it either

anotheronenow · 25/06/2022 16:30

+1 for wishing ppl would tone it down a bit. I also hate strong perfumes and have had films and concerts wrecked by having to breathe it in - it feels so intrusive. I also can't abide it when ppl use the super strong fabric conditioner stuff and so even if they aren't wearing perfume, I feel like I'm choking. So chemical-y.

Ponderingwindow · 25/06/2022 16:42

fragrance allergies are testable, diagnosable and real.

lets consider just a very mild reaction. Your perfume triggered a skin response only. No airway problems today. Over the next 36 hours the rash gets worse not better because that is how this allergy works. She can barely think about anything other than how itchy she is, not getting a good nights sleep and not doing her best at work or with her family. That is what you leave in the wake of your scent.

bellac11 · 25/06/2022 16:44

Youth Dew is vile, my mum used to wear that in the 70s, me stuck in the car (no air con in those days young uns) behind her on the back seat retching.

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/06/2022 17:04

One of my pet hates is perfume wearers who don’t shower before swimming. Urgh.

Mine too, it's revolting, I can taste it in the water.

That video upthread about Japan was really interesting, thanks!

Strugglingtodomybest · 25/06/2022 17:23

There's so many times I've had peopel walk past and they stink! Would hate for that to be me.

But it is you! You still stink, just of fake fragrances instead.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound harsh, but can you understand that to some people your perfume is just as bad as BO etc?

Like a previous poster said, the way to not stink is to wash regularly. You could still have somebody who stinks of BO and who was spraying perfume on, and those of us who re sensitive to smell would be able to smell the BO and the perfume.

In the days when i went swimming I really liked this! I think its nice, it sort of mingles with the water and smells much better than perfume on its own!

InChocolateWeTrust · 25/06/2022 17:48

Yanbu, I hate it, I always think its smells cheap and gaudy somehow

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 25/06/2022 20:59

How can you possibly know 'how much' perfume she sprayed? Maybe it was one spritz?
