Posting for traffic, sorry.

Can anyone tell what the word before "Northern Ireland" says on this birth certificate?

I've included a shot of other words to make it easier.

Additionally, does anyone know how to find out your mother's maiden name if you do not know what it is?

It's Newry.

It's a pretty strange way to write a capital N, but you can see that the 'N' and 'r' in Northern Ireland are written same as the 'N' and 'r' in the first word.

Crispynoodle · 22/06/2022 18:00

Definitely Newry

UrsulaPandress · 22/06/2022 18:02

Newry. As most others have said.

MadeForThis · 22/06/2022 18:02

It's Newry, Northern Ireland

Thank you everyone.

@Eyesopenwideawake There is an estrangement issue so not possible by the more direct route. This post is for someone else (DP) and they're struggling to work out how to find these things out. It's not actually my family.

Has he done ancestry dna?. it's amazing what and who comes out of the woodwork.

Wattleanddaub · 22/06/2022 18:10

Newry. If not a home birth then you're looking at families living in Down, South Armagh and possibly North Louth.

Do you have a date for the birth that you're researching? There are some vensus records in the public area now.

Also baptismal records can be good for getting maiden names. A lot of babies were registered very quickly after birth previously, so the reporting parent was often the father.

Mothers names (and professions) appear on marriage certificates in Northern Ireland as well.

TheKeatingFive · 22/06/2022 18:11

Newry is a city.

GoT1904 · 22/06/2022 18:17

I honestly thought it said henry.

caringcarer · 22/06/2022 18:17

Looks like Hewry but Newry makes more sense.

readsalotgirl63 · 22/06/2022 18:20

I'd agree with Newry. To get your grandmother's maiden name you could search for your granparents marriage - as presumably you know your grandfathers name and your grandmothers first name

Sortilege · 22/06/2022 18:24

You can order birth/marriage/death certificates on anyone if you have the relevant information. So estrangement shouldn’t stop you.

Do you know enough to find her birth or marriage records?

A feee trial on Ancestry or similar would let you search with only partial information and an age estimate,

Bigboysmademedoit · 22/06/2022 18:54

Definitely Newry

diddl · 22/06/2022 18:56

Not all records are up, but if you look at marriages on freebmd it could be on there.

CatWithARabbit · 22/06/2022 19:00

Jewry

CatWithARabbit · 22/06/2022 19:01

!!! Meant Newry !!

What I mean is if you know the GFs name & wedding date/place the GMs name should be there also

hattie43 · 22/06/2022 19:05

I think it's an H not an N , seems too long to be an N

It looks exactly like the N in Northern Ireland!

Clymene · 22/06/2022 19:10

It's Newry.

A580Hojas · 22/06/2022 19:15

Newry is a place in Northern Ireland - so more likely to be that than jewry or hewry, doesn't anyone think?

DuchessOfSausage · 22/06/2022 19:16

It says Newry, Northern Ireland.

Thirtieth May 1979 W T McKind. Registrar.

Clymene · 22/06/2022 19:19

On a related note, I came across my birth certificate today while looking for something else and that was also bloody hard to read.

Why the hell don't registrars write in all caps? Many of them seem to delight in unnecessary pen flourishes

Clymene · 22/06/2022 19:21

And in answer to your second question, it should be on the birth certificate. Should say something like 'Doreen McAllen, nee O'Rourke'

Maray1967 · 22/06/2022 19:26

I’m an historian and read docs like this all the time. It’s Newry. The first letter is written exactly the same way as the N at the start of Northern.

RubyJack · 22/06/2022 19:27

Newry
